Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Warhammer 40k. Sci-fi/Fantasy universe. In the Grimdark pony rp, there is a game called Ponyhammer 40k, which is basically Warhammer with ponies. I'm pretending to be a Brother of Combat, Ponified sisters of battle.

Golden Stable = Golden Throne

The grimdark/cynicism line is taken from 'my faith is my shield! my fury is my sword!', a line commonly shouted by space marines in DoW2.

A few weeks ago I was toying with the idea of writing up a D&D style pantheon with the ponies. Celestia & Luna as the co-heads, the main six as intermediate powers with portfolios fitting to their personalities and elements, and a bunch of the background ponies as lesser powers with one or two area of influence.

I use to love the old second edition Faiths & Avatars book with it's detailed writeup of each god, their followers, tenets of the faith, holy days and so on. A full writeup like that for a pony based pantheon would be a lot of work, but would be very cool.

COMMODORE some puttering produces the seemingly correct but mathematically inexact measurements of
Pony leg = length of pony body = length of head/neck combined.
Minimum leg thickness is 1/2 the maximum, where it hits the body. It's not a direct taper, however, so a straight cone shape won't help. The characteristic smooth gradient of the curve would be necessary.

Will try and hit stuff with an actual measuring implement eventually.

The others grind each other down for a while, but Fluttershy, without the killer instinct to really take advantage of anypony else's mistakes, follows. Rarity proves to be a pretty good player, but can't keep up with Twilight's ability to calculate probabilities on the fly which make her an excellent technical opponent, and Pinkie Pie is completely unreadable, a la Kenneth from 30 Rock. Pinkie Pie and Twilight end up in head to head play, but ultimately Pinkie loses when she momentarily forgets that "all red cards" isn't actually a hand in poker. Twilight emerges victorious.

Also, I suspect this thread title will reduce at least one cynical pony-hating browncoat to tears, and I heartily approve of it

Wow, you're right - not only did he get Bloomberg, he actually asked outright "is your character a tree?" and got it as soon as I answered yes. And that was only on question 13 or 14. He also managed to get Winona on the first try in spite of all of his questions after I told him it was a dog being way off-base.

Though I did stump him with something not Pony related though, Koromaru from Persona 3.

He also guessed Lyra, which really impressed me. I did stump him with the kindly man from A Song of Ice and Fire, however. That one was pretty obscure imo.

This will probably reveal my callous and emotionless nature, but I really don't get why everyone gets so sad at Spike potentially growing up and eventually leaving Twilight. They would have had a wonderful life together at that point and it would be a gradual change (he'd almost certainly acquire additional independence as he got older). It just seems odd to me to want things to stay the same forever.

Minimum leg thickness is 1/2 the maximum, where it hits the body. It's not a direct taper, however, so a straight cone shape won't help. The characteristic smooth gradient of the curve would be necessary.

Hey everypony! Finally got around to S2E1 last night, great to have the show back. I'm not going to wade through all 30 pages that have popped up since Friday night (geeze, you guys are prolific writers) but I think I agree with the general sentiment. I know I posted in the last thread that based on the wired clip of the scene with the M6 in front of the maze I wasn't too crazy about Discord.
Holy crap, I have never been so happy to be wrong. Also, pinkie pie had the best line and Flittershy had the best scene and I don't even have to specify beyond that because you all know exactly what I'm referring to.

Also, since I saw warhorse this weekend I really want to see a pony named Joey pop up in Equestria with PTSD. Good show, amazing special effects work on the horse puppets

Rightio everypony (hurhur), I watched a couple of episodes and here are my opinions that everyone has to care about because I'm awesome.

When I first heard about this before it was aired, I was actually really looking forward to it. However, looking around the internet, it would seem that I am the only one who’s been left a little disappointed. Now, as an animation student, I know good animation when I see it, and for a children’s TV series and all the cheap animation shortcuts these kind of shows tend to use, the animation itself is pretty damn good, and visually, it looks fantastic. It has its funny moments and some of the characters are kind of likable. For what it is - My Little Pony - it's a pretty alright adaptation. (Seeing as the original was the Devils work)
However, I fail to see why it has become so popular. With the fan base this show has gotten, I was half expecting it to be a humorous parody of the original My Little Pony. Like I said, it's good for what it is, but I'm starting to feel like the only reason it has gained so much popularity is because of the visuals and the fact that Lauren Faust is behind it (Who has been responsible for FAR better shows, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends being my personal favourite). Take that away and focus on the narrative aspect of it and it becomes... alright. It has funny bits, but nothing special, and It does have some likeable characters.
It just feels like a bit of a novelty when it goes beyond the target audience. To be honest, I'm much happier buying some of the pretty merchandise, admitting that it's a novelty and make up some My Little Pony stories in my head rather then watch the show itself. :smallbiggrin:
Maybe I just haven't watched enough of it, but I actually got bored and couldn't be bothered to watch anymore. Cartoons should not make you bored.:smallannoyed:

Well, we've had 24 threads. Fully 50% of that content, at least, has been on topic. We've covered politics, metabolism, historical analogues, Equestrian history and myth cycles, economics - ponyconomics was the big thing in the day! - and more. It's a very rich world, and I always find myself more appreciative after a while. Some episodes were blah, but they grew on me as thy had time to sink in.

Plus, it's totally cool if you don't like ponies. We just happen to be a thread about folks who love / are ponies. Of course we are gonna say ponies are awesome!

And if you like ponies but not the show? Well, a big draw is the community, rather than the show itself. I know he community is sitting at 51% of the reason I'm here, personally.

Okay, I have a question.

While I'm fully aware that Lauren Faust was the lead on FiM, and worked on Foster's Home and PPG, why does everyone credit her as being the leads on those shows as well? I'm pretty sure that at the least her husband Craig was the mind behind PPG :smallconfused: I honestly had never really heard of her before FiM and had just followed Craig McCracken's shows. Now, since they're married and have worked on all the same projects that's great, but correct me if I'm wrong, I feel like somehow Craig's efforts have been forgotten in all the ponysanity...

Near as I can tell, it's because a goodly portion of the stuff that is the initial draw - the art style - is directly attributable to Lauren. It can be seen in PPG, Fosters, and MLP. McCracken had his own genius, but I'm not gonna celebrate his work on stuff he didn't do :smallwink:

It is Interesting to note that Lauren herself is almost unable to be responsible for FiM though. The same story-boarders, animators, etc. Are still there while she isn't. She was more the party face, which is why she gets the glory.

I have a pet peeve about people using the spoiler button way to much and wish the board didn't have the button to make the tags. It seems to have led to people spoiling anything and everything just on an off chance somebody might maybe consider something a spoiler.*

For example. Lets say somepony got an inside leak of Episode Five. Let's say Zecora's in it. Well right now that might be a spoiler (particularly if say the source verifies it won't be until then) but once it airs... no. Because it tells you nothing other then a bit of the cast, if that can possibly ruin the episode for someone what exactly are they doing discussing a show period? The details of the story, yeah. A brief blurb like you might see in a guide preview.... why?*

Spoilers should be reserved for things that you won't expect, not a blanket on anything possibly related to the topic at hand.

*Like say Discord, he's been on top ED already so his name and appearance are hardly anything they might have been a few weeks ago. And this would include something like "Villian of the Season 2 Premiere" while something like:

A few weeks ago I was toying with the idea of writing up a D&D style pantheon with the ponies. Celestia & Luna as the co-heads, the main six as intermediate powers with portfolios fitting to their personalities and elements, and a bunch of the background ponies as lesser powers with one or two area of influence.

I use to love the old second edition Faiths & Avatars book with it's detailed writeup of each god, their followers, tenets of the faith, holy days and so on. A full writeup like that for a pony based pantheon would be a lot of work, but would be very cool.

I would use it if you make it :smallsmile:

[FFRP] Magic Is Meticulous

Topaz swivels her ears, paying careful attention as she examines the diagram Starry is working on. No, no, brainstorming is good! It's interesting to learn about your magic; I'm seriously impressed with how you work everything out to achieve your full potential. I don't do enough of that.

She ponders for a minute, still looking at the diagram. You know, I think maybe part of the problem is that what I make has some other differences that what your sword does besides being semi-independent.

She indicates some of Starry's notes. My shapes have a volume, but they don't really act like physical objects or kinetic analogs to them. I mean, they don't behave like anything with mass or even *consistent inertia; they kind of either move or they don't. When I fly, I don't get the sense that I'm pushing against anything, or at least not anything very specific. I think there must be some more fundamental difference in how the magic gets translated into the final effect than I assumed.

Why? He always seemed like a good one to me. Only one who didn't seem like a good captain was Sisko, and then he just should have had a title more in line with what he did.

A rough approximation is all... that'll be the limiting size factor, you see, due to the fact that 3D models have a minimum wall thickness that will print (well, potentially, there are ways around that, e.g. filling in the space between the belly and the floor, for example).

At actual 144th scaler, they'd be about 6mm tall (roughly) and about 12mm at 72nd (which is 25-28mm scale, i.e. roughly the size of RPG figures or very nominally Games Workshop stuff). (Fun fact: that used to be 25mm, but everyone kept inflating the size of the models so much it eventually became more like 28mm or even 30mm. Real 25mm are quite a bit smaller...)

*Ahem* Point of order? MLP FIM is only about 200% longer than Firefly if you're comparing number of episodes. If you measure by quantity of content; ie how many minutes or hours of stuff we have to watch, firefly currently has more. (Particularly when you add the movie in.)

Firefly has a total of 675 minutes in 14 episodes, plus one 119 minute movie for a total of 794 minutes of footage.

MLP currently has 27 episodes of 22 minutes each, for a total of 594 minutes of footage. Once season 2 is finished we'll have a total of 1144 minutes of footage and will officially be bigger than Firefly by all metrics.

(Note that I'm not being pedantic, I actually did these calculations when I was refuting another fan's gloom & doom "What if we only get two seasons? you can't have a fandom with only two seasons!" rant.)

Well, we've had 24 threads. Fully 50% of that content, at least, has been on topic. We've covered politics, metabolism, historical analogues, Equestrian history and myth cycles, economics - ponyconomics was the big thing in the day! - and more. It's a very rich world, and I always find myself more appreciative after a while. Some episodes were blah, but they grew on me as thy had time to sink in.

Plus, it's totally cool if you don't like ponies. We just happen to be a thread about folks who love / are ponies. Of course we are gonna say ponies are awesome!

And if you like ponies but not the show? Well, a big draw is the community, rather than the show itself. I know he community is sitting at 51% of the reason I'm here, personally.
I have to agree with you there SiuiS. By this point the show itself is only a part of the whole equation. The entire subculture has taken on a life of its own, and its been great. How many people can say they have beaten down 4chan with goodness and kindness? Not many, that's for sure. If a show is capable of inspiring and instigating mass outbreaks of tolerance and understanding and so much good on the internet - a few choice bits aside (this is still the internet after all) - then that is downright admirable. Even if you still feel kinda weird about watching the show, there really is nothing to be afraid or ashamed about, and there are infinite outlets for the want for pony otherwise http://i.imgur.com/ROEne.jpg

Near as I can tell, it's because a goodly portion of the stuff that is the initial draw - the art style - is directly attributable to Lauren. It can be seen in PPG, Fosters, and MLP. McCracken had his own genius, but I'm not gonna celebrate his work on stuff he didn't do :smallwink:

It is Interesting to note that Lauren herself is almost unable to be responsible for FiM though. The same story-boarders, animators, etc. Are still there while she isn't. She was more the party face, which is why she gets the glory.
Haha, I'll freely admit that I'm not familiar with Craig's pre-PPG work (even though that's mostly college projects and Two Stupid Dogs, haha!) so that would make a lot of sense actually. To be fair though, not celebrating work on stuff they didn't do is why I was so confused as to why people were attributing Lauren to things that had Craig's name on it, and hence this conversation :smalltongue:

Well, we've had 24 threads. Fully 50% of that content, at least, has been on topic. We've covered politics, metabolism, historical analogues, Equestrian history and myth cycles, economics - ponyconomics was the big thing in the day! - and more. It's a very rich world, and I always find myself more appreciative after a while. Some episodes were blah, but they grew on me as thy had time to sink in.

Plus, it's totally cool if you don't like ponies. We just happen to be a thread about folks who love / are ponies. Of course we are gonna say ponies are awesome!

And if you like ponies but not the show? Well, a big draw is the community, rather than the show itself. I know he community is sitting at 51% of the reason I'm here, personally.

Well, you see, with my Church, I didn't want to do a costume that I had already done before, you see? I was trying for skimpy robes to echo the religion aspect of it. But I guess there's something to be said for going with the traditional standby of harem clothes, especially if everypony is going to mistake the robes for hand towels...

*Spoiler'd because I don't want to accidentally mess up anything, even though I don't really intend to say spoilers*

Alright, so I'm hearing that this first episode has brigged with a lot of fanon. I'm pretty sure I'm knowledgeable about exactly half of the fanon, and completely unaware of the other half. Since I didn't really see much of anything in my pony worldview disturbed in S2Ep1, I'm guessing that stuff was in the latter half?

What I'm getting at is that I didn't see anything messed up to me, but I'd like to hear what was messed up for other people? What fanon stuff has been confirmed/denied?

The only wrecked fanon that I saw was that Rainbow Dash can infact survive without her wings, and that Celestia / Luna didn't create the world. Or their Alicorn Predecessors for that matter.

Rewatching season 2 ep 1, noticed error in first five minutes. Twilight Says don't worry everyone, not everypony, when she tells them she has a new spell that will fix everything. You know, right before her fail safe spell failed?

It seems like "Everypony" is the replacement for "Everybody", where as "Everyone" has been left intact in both Equestrian and the English language.

Well, I think I've mentioned I'm a grad student, and I do a lot of scientific programming stuff, as my group tends to work on calculations that are somewhat out of the mainstream, so there aren't many big packages designed to run the calcs for us. I've been working on a program, and although it seems to be working, I realized today that I made a stupid choice regarding data types that's been slowing things down horribly.

Basically, I'm doing Monte Carlo (random walks) on a grid, and I need to store the grid points as well as the number of times they've been visited. I've been mainly programming in C/C++, and because those languages don't have dynamic arrays, I had been doing an extremely inefficient info dump from very long walks and then finding the multiplicity data after the fact. Today I realized that I could have done it on-the-fly and saved probably enormous amounts of time using a linked list...

Essentially, the time complexity wouldn't change, but my N would have shifted from ~500k - 1M to 300-2000...

Derp.

EDIT: Also, I'm gonna buck (it's a pun!) the system and say that Twi wins the poker game, precisely because she's good at statistics and rules. There was a case IIRC, where a group of math students from MIT went to Vegas and played that style (they may have card-counted as well) so well that they were asked to leave...and never come back. I totally think Twilight is up to matching that.

What they didn't know is that it's the Elements themselves that create the new body for him. Why can't Celestia and Luna use the Elements themselves? Because like Twilight they need friends who embody the Elements to use them. And the process of turning Discord to stone resulted in him needing a new body, which the Elements were only too happy to provide. And I'm sure Celestia and Luna wouldn't want to turn the Elements against their friends. :smallamused:

*Ahem* Point of order? MLP FIM is only about 200% longer than Firefly if you're comparing number of episodes. If you measure by quantity of content; ie how many minutes or hours of stuff we have to watch, firefly currently has more. (Particularly when you add the movie in.)

Firefly has a total of 675 minutes in 14 episodes, plus one 119 minute movie for a total of 794 minutes of footage.

MLP currently has 27 episodes of 22 minutes each, for a total of 594 minutes of footage. Once season 2 is finished we'll have a total of 1144 minutes of footage and will officially be bigger than Firefly by all metrics.

(Note that I'm not being pedantic, I actually did these calculations when I was refuting another fan's gloom & doom "What if we only get two seasons? you can't have a fandom with only two seasons!" rant.)

I can pick something up, and move it relative to me. So, if anypony remembers the essay I wrote for English comparing Beowulf and Rainbow Dash and was wondering how the teacher would react, I can proudly say that I got a 94% on the essay, and the only real comments were "My daughter would love this subject" and that the third page was supposed to be a FULL page, but my margins were weird. She did mark on the rubric that the subject was funny, though.

Also, does anypony have a name I could use for a coworker of Dash's? I've got Ditzy Doo written down as a placeholder at the moment, but since Derpy is already in the story I'm writing, and we're not entirely sure if she's going to use that name should she ever be named in-show, I'd rather not use that.

Who else but Corin Trigmus could sell a group out or try to sell a group out on that many occasions and still be a party member till the bitter fireball filled end.

So far it is working out, though it is parent's night tonight, so we shall see if I slip then.

Wait...how many times did I betray the party that campaign? I know there were several combats that I sat out on because Corrin got completely hammered, but not so many outright betrayals.

I've heard Cloudkicker kicked around (badum tish) as the name of one of the background pegasi, that would work as a weather pony.

Other names: Thunderhead, Spring Breeze, Cloudy Skies, April Showers, meh, that's all I got for now.

I second Cloudkicker, because Cloudkicker looks rather much like Derpy, and I like Derpy a whole bunch, which means of course that I have to like Cloudkicker at least a regular bunch.
