So who among the playgrounders has purchased dead island?
I recently got the game because of my love of zombies. I must say it has been great so far and I am really enjoying it.
The atmosphere is really tense in the beginning of the game but soon you will find yourself unafraid of the undead and will happily hack away at them. The weapon system works well and it is heavily focused on melee but still has the obligatory firearms. The focus on melee is a good choice as you aren't an all conquering hero but just a person trying to survive so you should be limited to easily available weapons. A group of 5 zombies would be no threat to a space marine or master chief but to your character it presents quite a challenge and you have to think quick on your feet to survive.
If you do die however you will simply lose a small portion of your money and be transported back to a checkpoint with full health and whats more the zombies you already killed in an area will still be dead. It doesn't really feel like there is a downside to dying but it definately saves the frustration of dying over and over again at a certain part like in other games. The loading also takes an instant so there is no annoying load screens to wait for.
To kill the host of undead you face you need weapons. These need to be constantly maintained as they break slightly with every swing. It can get a bit annoying having to constantly repair them and I am sure in the real world a machete would last a lot longer but it adds to the survival horror aspect of the game. I have found that I will use one weapon almost exclusively because each weapon has different stats but have other weapons for backup in case your primary weapon breaks. You can also upgrade your weapons and add things like nails to bats to make them more deadly.
There are four characters to choose from each of them have their own unique background and speciality. I was absolutely appalled at the australian accent of one of them so I decided on the chinese woman who specialises in bladed weapons. Machete's all the way!
The graphics are amazing and I literally just stopped and stared at the panoramic views of the island for a good five minutes when I started playing. Closer details are just as good and the lighting effects are superb. The blood effects are nice and after any fight pools of blood will gather on the ground.
The zombies themselves are more like infected than undead and there are "special" infected as well. The special infected arent really that special and the only one presenting any abnormal qualities is the "Suicider" who is basically a zombie bomb. The special infected do present different challenges though. You will also have to combat other survivors which provides some interesting gameplay.
Overall I like the game a lot and am giving it a 8.75/10
