View Full Version : Arcane casting of druid spells?

Making a character that is all about summoning stuff, but due to fluff reasons, I'm making him a sorcerer who will become a malconvoker, which specialises me basically to Summon Monster and even more important, Planar Binding. Now, due to said fluffl, I found a great spell chain in Sandstom which is basically Summon Desert Ally, which is a druid spell, but I play a Bedine character(Forgotten realms setting) and it would be nifty to have.

Is there any feat or something I could take that would make me able to use this spell as an arcane user? It could be a limited time a day, you know, like only once a day I can use it or something? Preferably without having to sacrifice spell levels, meaning casting summon desert ally 1 and having to memorise it like two or three levels higher, or something?

A permissive reading of Extra Spell could work, but is generally not considered RAW.

If you can find the spell on any Domain lists, Arcane Disciple might work, but requires some WIS investment. It does not appear to be on any of Sandstorm's Domains as I look at it now, though.

A 4th-level wizard can likewise learn an extra 0-level or 1st-level spell, but since wizards learn spells far more easily than sorcerers, this feat is of less use to her.

For classes such as wizard that have more options for learning spells, Extra Spell is generally used to learn a specific spell that the character lacks access to and would be unable to research.

first note the complete change in intention. (CArc is the newer book.) also note that it doesn't say on your spell list. also note master specialist's abilities which allow the character to learn an extra spell needed errata to specify that they meant only wizard spells.

I'd say that the CArc version gives access to cross-list spells both as written and as intended.

(not that it matters, because SDA is like, nine spells.)

I'm not saying your reading of Extra Spell is incorrect; I am saying that a perusal of debates on the subject on this forum puts that reading as the minority opinion. Other forums may well produce a different skew in the percentages.

The closest I saw to fulfilling my goal is a feat from Races of Faerun called Southern Magician, it says:

Benefit: Once per day per two spellcaster levels, you can
cast a divine spell as an arcane spell, or vice versa. This
enables you to bypass arcane spell failure due to armor, or
gain additional benefit from spell that functions differently
for a divine caster instead of an arcane caster, such as true
seeing or magic weapon.

But I have to be a specific race, plus the wording is a bit iffy.

Southern Magician only allows you to cast a spell you already know as a spell of the other type.

I know this is an "old school" solution, but perhaps you could just ask your DM to add the creatures you want to the Summon Monster List?

Or a straight substitution; spell you want for never taking the "other" Summon Monster spells to make your fluff and crunch line up but stipulate you want it to qualify as Summon Monster for prerequisites etc.

I don't think it's too much of a strain or drain on the DM to allow this, and if it gives you the character you want, it's not unreasonable.

Since you are of an appropriate race you could work the change into your back story as a racial link to something in your family past or a ritual performed in the desert by an ancestor etc.

Yeah, I'll see what I can do, but it probably not work. Should have played an archivist, but it wouldn't work for the character. Thanks anyway!

One level of Sand Shaper gives your sorcerer some 30+ bonus spells, including all the SDAs. Also in Sandstorm.

That is actually pretty good. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after reading the class's features, it seems to me that you can actually get the ability to cast Summon Desert ally, all nine ranks of it, as an arcane caster.

You're correct. "Levels", not "ranks", but that's just a pedantic quibble. :smalltongue:

Nice catch, Analysis.
