1H weapons can normally be wielded 2H unless there's a specific exception (such as for the rapier), so the hypothetical character could do that just fine. "A character can use a bastard sword two-handed as a martial weapon," but is not required to.

Huh. I guess ... I guess you take a non-proficiency penalty for wielding it in two hands, in that case.
