So I want to make an encounter trap in my next dungeon (dungeonscape, pg.120), and I’ve got all the stats from the rules. However, it only gives an “average damage” for the class instead of what dice to throw. So I was just wondering if anyone knows how to translate average damage into the number of dice to throw.

Thanks in advance!

Check to see if the damage is evenly divisible by one of the following numbers:

2.5 (1d4)
3.5 (1d6)
4.5 (1d8)
5.5 (1d10)
6.5 (1d12)
10.5 (1d20)

That will tell you how many dice you need to roll to get that average damage.

That is, the number you get will be the number of dice, the number you divided by tells you the size.

Well, her is the average of each type of dice:

d2:1.5
d4:2.5
d6:3.5
d8:4.5
d10:5.5
d12:6.5
Usually rounded up
