A while ago I was toying around with the idea of building an entirely new class mechanic system, much like the psionics. The idea I had was to power their abilities through life energy, souls. I realize there is the whole Magic of Incarnum book with essentially the same theme, however the class idea I have and proposed mechanic I've been working on are quite different.
The first thing I need to do is come up with a name, yes I know having an idea with out is really lame, but I've got a things for aesthetics. I've thought of all the obvious and a few not so obvious names, but they don't appeal to me.
I've been having a little trouble figuring out exactly how they'd work, especially making them balanced and fit into the preexisting class structures. I'm thinking of using a logarithmic or exponential progression of the Fibonacci sequence.
I have managed to break it down into five archetypes, a Mele Fighter, a Summoner, a Healer/Buffer/Debuffer, a Caster and a Skill Monkey/Crafter.
What finally sparked me to reach out to the Playground for some help is a gentleman's agreement between myself and a friend of mine to pit two of our favorite characters against one another. This means I finally have to build one of these guys, specifically the Mele fighter and Skill Monkey/Crafter classes.
I'm thinking that the Mele Fighter will be able to "Focus" his collected "Fragments" into increasing his BAB, AC and DMG temporally or permanently by "Expending" them. Gaining increased movement speed, additional attacks and the like are other ideas.
For the Skill Monkey/Crafter a similar idea to increase Skill Ranks and gain additional Class Skills as well as "Forging" items, weapons and armor.
What I'm looking for is any ideas, thoughts, suggestions on keeping them balanced and working them into the existing class structure.
I could also use some advice on the actual build, I thought of posting this in the normal form, yet it requires too much homebrew to make it work thematically the way I want.
The character I have to build is technically two persons. One is a large hulking golem/construct, think Warforged imbued with racial traits from varying monsters, currently I'm thinking Dragon, for Breath Weapon and Wings, not to mention the nice stat boosts, and Titan for more boosts, a few nice abilities and a modified version of Oversized Weapon.
ok too complicated to finish the post now i'll add more asap, please gimme ur thoughts on what i got out, tks in advance playgrounders!
