Except for making your PC a bear. Even Awakened bears lack LA.

But hiring a valet instead of buying a Pearl of Speech is awesome.

On a related note, a friend of mine once had a character called Sir Bearus. He was not a bear, though. Or a three-headed dog, strangely enough.

A "bear character" could easily be any number of creatures who don't spend the skill points on speak language.
