Mad they'll call me, MAD!

Hey, so I'll be putting together a mad scientist costume for Halloween (Fools I will destroy you all T-Shirt, lab coat with sewn in water pistol holsters, spiky hair and regular pants and shoes), and I need a name, obviously, to put on my lab coat. The difficulty is that the name need to work in french and english, I've been polling my brain and my friends for a while now and we got nothing, so let's see if the Playground holds enough collective madness to help me shall we?

Also, I'm looking for sciency menacing alternate names for a water pistol, so far I've got Dioxygen Hydrate beam pistol.

Links to where I may find the T-Shirt and a reasonably cheap labcoat online would also be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Dr. De Struction?

Dr Jan Itor?

Dioxygen Hydrate beam pistol.

Dihydrogen Monoxide is closer. H2O not HO2. Someone once told me the technically accurate name of water but I forgot.

Dihydrogen monoxide dispersal device?

Dihydrogen Oxide Obliteration Machine. Then its DOOM for short.

Dr EleMENTAL perhaps?

<edit>

Darn, now I have The doom song (www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqcn_TPu4qQ) stuck in my head.

No one calls water every anything but water, in my experience. That said:

Hydrogen oxide
Dihydrogen monoxide
Hydrogen monoxide
Dihydrogen oxide
Hydrogen hydroxide

Are all technically correct.

Real lab coats are pretty expensive. Around 50$, here, but probably cheaper elsewhere, we have a high price level.

And put the word "Pneumatic" somewhere in your water pistol.

Wikipedia to the rescue - "Oxidane" is the technically correct name.

Dihydrogen Monoxide et al do describe the moleucle accurately but do not follow proper naming convention.

Oxidane is the official IUPAC name. Dihydrogen Monoxide and the like are systemic names (with varying levels of commonality of usage and hence acceptability), but aren't technically incorrect.

Dioxygen hydrate is a bit odd since dioxygen = O2 and hydrate (as I've come across it) is water (H2O) captured in a crystalline structure. So it would be O2(H2O)x, where x is one for hydrate.

If you add a drop of something else to the water it could be thought of a diluted solution of it.
Ex. acetic acid/vinegar or such becomes Acetyl hydroxide solution, Acide acétique (french apparently), Ethanoic acid, Methanecarboxylic acid. You could string it together with the water to become something like Ethanoic acid in Oxidane.
Or you could just go with CH3COOH(aq), chemical formulas can look quite menacing in themselves. :smalltongue:

Well, most likely you'll have a solution of sodium chloride and calcium carbonate anyway.

How to create a mad scientist name:
1) Figure out a good description of the character.
2) Pull out a German-English dictionary, and translate.
3) Mash all the words into one, cutting off syllables where necessary.
4) Add "Herr Doktor" to the front.
5) Fake a German accent. The more obviously phony, the better.

The difficulty is that the name need to work in french and english,

You need to team up with a friend who doesn't mind dressing as a mad lab assistant (possibly of the Igor variety). Then you can be "Dr Si" and your friend can be "Tiffick" (or perhaps "Tiffique" if female)

Together, you are "Dr Si 'n Tiffique" (Say it aloud...)

If all else fails, grab a random german word and add -stein. :smallwink:

To continue on Phishfoods suggestion:
Dr. Acula?

Also, a monocle and a fancy mustache.
And most importantly, a fancy hat.

"Herr (or "Frau") Doktor" is just how you adress those in German, though, along the lines of "Mr (name)". And it's usually reserved for physicians, psychologists and other folks you pay to mess with what's inside you, with other academics it's more commonly "Herr (or "Frau") Professor". They themselves usually introduce themselves as just "Doktor (name)" or "Professor (name)" when acting in an official function. If you want to keep the German-ness up, your name-thingy should read "Prof. Dr./Prof./Dr. (either, if applicable, shorthand for scientific discipline before the) (title, if there is one, and name, can be just the family name, the family name with initials for any given ones, or the full deal) (or a comma and the full appellation of your area of expertise right thereafter, using both is not uncommon though, such as with specialists)". And even then, you put that monstrosity on a sign on your door, not your labcoat. :smalltongue:

As for an actual name that keeps the stereotype and works in both English and French... I don't know. Try a pun of some sort. "Dr. med. Schugge, mental illnesses and syndromes" is a classic, but it likely isn't the type of mad scientist you are looking for and really only works in German. Or Yiddish, as the case may be. :smalleek:

This. Definitely this.

Also, have you considered adding some sort of goggles to your costume? Maybe add a sci-fi looking gadget too to carry around with you as one of your 'inventions'.

Liberally sprinkled "von"s can make an already menacing name positively terrifying.

Look, we're going for cliche mad scientist, which means throwing poorly-translated German into a blender (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GratuitousGerman) and taking what comes out.

Also, have you considered adding some sort of goggles to your costume?
Remember, they cannot be allowed to do anything.

Well Dr. Epic is taken.:smallwink: Just pick a cool, evil sounding name/name and go with that. Is Dr. Horrible taken? That sounds like something I should know about, but I can't put my finger on it.

For some reason, (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NostalgiaFilter) Dr J.W. Müller will always be the most menacing name and title for me. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Tintin)

Problem is I can't do a german accent.... So, here's what I have:

The son of italian immigrants, John de Truccion earned his PHD in applied physics at the age of 19. He then worked for the Canadian government's top secret military research division, where he worked on different ways to weaponise the nation's most abundant resource, water, in prevision for the inevitable war with the US. After two years, the government declared his projects impractical and his methods unethical, and he was laughed out of the department. Now, under the name of Doctor Destruction, he terrorizes the populace he once helped defend, all the while mocking the fools who failed to see his genius.

So for the actual costume I was thinking this lab coat (worn opened) http://www.pulseuniform.com/styleshop.asp?styledefault=CH-1346

and this t-shirt under it http://www.offworlddesigns.com/p-291-fools-i-will-destroy-you-t-shirt.aspx

I'll probably wear black jeans with that, try to find safety glasses to go with the look, and by then I should have just enough hair to do something fun with it (it's about an inch long right now)

The whole costume should come at under 50$, plus I'll keep the shirt
