okay, so last seesion i killed off an npc member of the party, and because the party will probably resurrect him. I needed to ask, if a spellb like say, raise dead, was cast but it were to fail because the recipent was killed by a death attack, would the material component be wasted?

Unfortunatly yes, the spell has been cast and the components used to summon the power to finish the spell before the spell touches his target meaning they are used up and then as final you chose the target to raise. If the target is unwilling to be raised or unable the spell still concluded and didnt fail, it just didnt menage to raise the target.

My players will often take the extra step of using a Divination spell first to make sure they're not wasting their money on Raise Dead or Resurrection.

Speak With Dead -> "How did you die" is a decent way of sussing out death by Death Effect.
