It's the year 1009 in the land of Acia. A year in which war looms over the heads of the people as their king turns his mad eye to the elven lands in the east, hungry for conquest. But it all matters not to the dark lord of the sky.

Vinson "Toto" Artimison, also known as The Pest, is a necromancer-druid whose lust for power might even rival the king of the humans, but his thirst for knowledge is even greater. Seemingly at random he's been plucking the young, twisted and talented off the face of the earth to recruit them in small parties and employ them in his search for magical artifacts. While he dwells in his flying castle that casts a dark shadow over the land below, he appears to not care for it, even though all fear undead hordes will soon fall from the skies like a rain of undead cats and dogs...

We now join one of those parties employed by "Toto" as they stand at the edge of a river late at night, opposite which lies a town where they've heard lies the Trifold Sceptre of Dlagamela, the artifact they've been sent to find.

The only way across seems to be a small rowing boat with no oars in sight.

A tall, well-built man with shaggy black hair wearing breastplate armor and an irritated look stands before the forlorn craft.

"Well isn't this great. I suppose we should find something to use for oars - perhaps hew something suitable out of a log."

Aradin Crow, Blood King, looks about for a source of wood, or something else that he could use as an improvised oar.

Owrtho

"Darling, we go through this every time we get to a town. There's no way some floozy will tempt me from you. How could I even think of looking at another woman when I have you. Still, those men... Why just the thought of one of them even so much as touching you. Perhaps It would be best to avoid going into town... Hm? Well, yes, I suppose you're right... Well, we're going into the town right, have you worked out a way across this river yet?"

Seeming to talk toward his left hand, an eccentric looking man disregards his surroundings. His dialogue seems odd, as if he were speaking with another only he can hear. Finally, after only a short pause in his speech he seems to regard his surroundings for the first time. He promptly turns addressing his last sentence toward the others of the group.

Humming in delight, Rosy happily lifts up Mows and places him gently in his favorite pocket. Twirling her hair around on of her fingers absent-mindedly, she calls out to the rest of the group. "Me and Mows are going to put up some traps around camp. Be careful."

From another's perspective, it might appear that Rosy was trying to protect the rest of the group. In reality, however, that was only a secondary goal. The primary goal was to set up explosives. Each night, when Rosy went to bed, she half-wished for someone to try attacking her in her sleep.

Jallorn Endwhisper chats with an idle woodsman for a while, the conversation beginning friendly, but growing more tense after he explains his past, ending the conversation with the woodsman laughing so hard tears come to his eyes, and Jallorn yelling,"Son of an innkeeper and whore! I do NOT have a Grandmother complex!" Then walking away.

He glances at a certain cat. "I don't know why, but something's still telling me that's definitely not a real cat. However, you're a real dog, aren't you? Yes you are!" Jallorn comments to himself, then to a skeletal wolf beside him. A skeletal guard near him gestures to him, questioning him if he can stop being on lookout duty. "No!" Jallorn cries. "You're still fresh, so given half a chance, you'll probably go and try to hump the nearest living thing, given the instincts of most people nowadays", although he says such a thing with a slight grin on his face, looking at the nearest living thing to the skeleton...the cat who is not a cat.

Finishing the last trap, Rosy looks back at Jallorn with her hands on her hips and one eyebrow raised. "No need to be so mean, Mr. Endwhisper. Mows is just a genius, as I've already told you. That doesn't make him any less of a cat."

Ready to take a seat by the fire, Rosy places Mows by her side on the ground and looks back at Jallorn. "Say you're sorry and make up or somebody's oatmeal might explode tomorrow morning."

Jallorn stares back."That's Sir Endwhisper to you. I am a knight in service to my Lady Death, who is not only the greatest, but also my adoptive grandmother. Still, in wish for safe oatmeal, which oddly goes well with my dried elk meat....my apologies. I only meant that he was unlike any of the two cats I have seen in my entire lifetime. Perhaps I am just not used to cats."

He calls back to Aradin,"Hey Aradin! Let me know if you find a corpse! If it's big and of an aquatic creature, I can animate it and we can try to cross on its back! Or maybe yank off an arm to use as an oar!"

The woodsman, who was previously laughing, suddenly looks at Jallorn with an odd look on his face. Jallorn looks back at him with an irritated expression."What? Nothing wrong with that. Get on, now!"

"If only the surface or up a few feet under was frozen, they wouldn't be very stable, and they'd move to boot." Jallorn ponders. "It'd have to be frozen from the bottom-up." He glances at the trees behind them."Why not just thrash a bunch of trees together to make a makeshift bridge, or tear off a branch to use as a makeshift oar?"

Relevant, if late. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11993034#post11993034)

Mows
Mows does not seem to be able to spot any fishies, but the water stirs and ripples about eight feet from the riverside, signifying movement below the surface.

Aradin
You see a figure on the opposite side of the river, but in the darkness, with morning mist beginning to rise, it is hard to make out other than it having a humanoid shape.

Welknair
2011-10-08, 08:55 PM
"Well, Jallorn, that would be quite a bit easier if we were on the side of the river with the trees. Which is exactly where we want to get. So unless our future selves come back from the future to give us the wood that they collected so we can get across the river to get wood to bring back to our then-past selves, I don't think that'll be of much use. And I don't think Mows here can time travel," Aradin retorts sarcastically.

Pyromancer999
2011-10-08, 09:41 PM
"Gosh! Let me finish speaking. As I was going to finish saying, if we can find a fresh and strong enough corpse of a flying creature, we can get that to bring us back some wood if I can animate it." The look on Jallorn's face is vaguely odd, conveying that he hadn't thought of that before he spoke.

Welknair
2011-10-08, 09:55 PM
"I find it mildly disturbing how many of your plans involve the animating of various corpses. Then again, I suppose you're no worse than Rosy and her explosives... I believe we may need a non-corpse related plan of action to cross this river, unless some wildlife shows itself," Aradin continues.

Owrtho
2011-10-08, 11:02 PM
"Why yes, I suppose that is true. Why, I must say you're as brilliant as you are beautiful. I simply must agree my Darling, if the issue with the ice floes is that they would be unstable, why not merely form them so that they would be anchored to the shore and one another?"

As the others spoke, Jack simply seemed to listen at first. Then he seemed to ignore them before a random outburst, followed by dialogue that seemed directed toward the group.

Welknair
2011-10-08, 11:22 PM
"I suppose it really comes down to how large an area she can freeze with each detonation, and how many times she can do it. What do you say, Rosy?" Aradin says, quite ready to try something to get across this river.

Pyromancer999
2011-10-08, 11:25 PM
"I still say corpses are better." Jallorn mumbles as the others focus their attention upon Rosy.

Realms of Chaos
2011-10-09, 10:35 AM
Rosy thought about the matter for a few moments before finally saying, "I can freeze chucks up to 10 feet in diameter and 5 feet deep, if that's stable enough for you. With a bit of creative timing, I can get twelve such explosives to go off at once. If anyone has a rope, I can make a bridge out of it. Also, freezing from the bottom up won't work. Ice floats and we'd just flood the river even if it succeeded."

Welknair
2011-10-09, 11:42 AM
I've got rope, but only about fifty feet of it - not enough to span the river. If you can do twelve 10-foot diameter charges, then shouldn't you be able to link them together and to the shore, as Jack suggested? Five feet tall should be plenty stable for us to walk across with us worrying about them cracking," Aradin says to Rosy, quite ignoring the dejected Jallorn. Aradin's sure that they'll find something dead sooner or later and Jallorn will have a wonderful time going on a rampage with it.

Rosy
If you use your freeze charges to create a bridge, it will require Balance checks (DC 20) due to the ice's slipperyness and the bridge not being supported (at least not from below, if you still connect it to the sides of the river).

Anyone with Int 14 or higher
Alternatively, rather than walk across the bridge and face the Balance checks of the ice, you can crawl across. It'll be cold, but not cold enough to take nonlethal damage (unless you stay lying on it for too long).

Anyone with Jump +4 or higher and great confidence (or any positive Jump modifier and very great confidence)
"Can't you make a bridge with the rope and then we jump across at the end? It should be easy!"

Realms of Chaos
2011-10-10, 11:50 PM
OOC Well, I've got a negative sense motive modifier and a negative spot/listen modifier. Not much chance that Rosy would pick up on Mow's cue, let alone see what he's upset about. :smalltongue:

Under most circumstances, Rosy would instantly jump to attention at Mow's hissing. He was one perceptive kitty, after all. At the moment, however, Rosy was thinking about explosives. It was rare that two thoughts could exist in her head at once and none to date had ever beat out explosives.

It was true, she realized, that everyone could simply wade across the river. On the other hand, where was the fun in that? There were (slippery and dangerous) explosives at hand and everyone was counting on her to use them. "Maybe we could work out a compromise. If "Sir" Endwhisper gives one end of the rope to some of... his... men... and walks them out into the river, we could just use them as the remainer of the platform. Jump from head to head. They could even hold the bridge in place."

Surprise Round!
Only Aradin and the creature can act in the surprise round, but initiatives are like so:

The Creature: 18
Rosy: 14
Mows: 13
Jack: 12 (rolled for since Owrtho hadn't rolled yet)
Aradin: 11
Jallorn: 4

From the riverwater resounds splashing as a creature that resembles a cross between an ankylosaurus and a broad-mouthed eel leaps from the depths it lurked in and rises behind Rosy. It lands halfway on the shore, its stinking breath oozing out like a cloud of rot. Rosy, Mows and Aradin are instantly sickened as they stand so close.

Aradin draws his sword and attempts to blind the beast--

Will save result: 16. (Otherwise he would have been blinded for 1 round, if I am reading Wool Over the Eyes right and guestimating Aradin's invested points correctly at 4 points in Glamerkin.)

--but narrowly fails.

Rosy and Mows are within 5 ft of the creature. Aradin within 10 ft. Jack and Jallorn stand 20 ft away.

Other OOC
You may now act in any order you get on, I'll resolve the actions in order of initiative so it speeds up a bit. (Though if you happen to get on in order of initiative or post in that manner at a speed you all are fine with, that's peachy of course. :smallwink:)

"How dare you. I was just having the most pleasent chat with my beloved before you interrupted."

Seeing the creature, attack from the water, Jack becomes rather annoyed that it would dare to interrupt his discourse. It must die. With a call to express his ire, Jack begins to move toward it drawing his dagger. As he does so, his form seems to split at seems previously unseen. Unravelling to reveal things not beyond the comprehension of the normal man. From tow splits extend a pair of tentacles, while from others eyes may be seen watching. One even seems to open up onto a mouth. Due to his now unravelled appearance, Jack seems larger than before.

OOCShouting as a free action. A move action to move within 5 feet of the fish and draw a weapon. Swift action to manifest true nature, shielding Mows, Rosy and Aradin from the effects (DC 15 will save or become shaken for encounter or 1 minute, whichever is longer). As a standard action, using 1 of my 7 daily uses of size modulation for expansion, making Jack large.
Total stat changes to Jack:
+2 Str
-2 Dex
+0 attack = -1 attack +1 from str bonus
-1 AC = -1 Ac -1 from dex penalty + 1 from eyes
+2 search & spot
+0 Reflex = +1 Reflex -1 from Dex penalty
+15 feet of Darkvision
Dagger deals 1d6+3 damage (10' reach)
2 tentacles dealing 1d6+4 damage (5' reach)
1 bite dealing 1d6+3 damage (0' reach)

Rosy: 14

Jack: 12 (rolled for since Owrtho hadn't rolled yet)
Aradin: 11

The Creature does nothing. Nothing... except for briefly shimmering a metallic red sheen across it! It quickly disappears however.

Mows moves in for a flanking position and deals out the PAIN!!

Jack manifests his true nature, to which the creature fails its save! Jallorn is not shielded though (haven't checked if he's immune to fear, if not, make a DC 15 Will save or Jallorn becomes shaken, Pyro).

Since the creature's turn is before any of yours, here's its turn for the second round:

The Creature lets out a fishy growl and its face shoots forward, its maw opening to grab hold of Jallorn, thin teeth digging into him, dealing 5 points of damage. It then proceeds to throw Jallorn into the water, 10 ft behind it (DC 10 Swim check).

Aradin's attack barely nicks the creature's tough hide.

Jallorn's Death Coil nicks the creature, hurting it as much as it would've full on the face. (You correctly guessed you still could act, by the way. Your first post was basically your move action, your second your standard action.)

The Creature
The creature unfolds its back like a fan, resulting in the sprouting of many stilt-like fin-arms. It attempts to strike those around it, missing Mows by a long shot, Aradin by a hair and hitting Jack and Jallorn full on.

Jack takes 12 damage. Jallorn takes 9 damage.

Aradin
With a lucky spotting just as you duck away from one of the stilt-like fin-arms, you notice that they are strong, bony and armored, but the creature's back that they used to cover is rather pink underneath, having rather... vital implications.

Welknair

Narrowly dodging the blow, Aradin yells, "The exposed back! It may be vulnerable! Jallorn, see if you can run up it's back!"

Aradin attempts to hack at the fin-arms.

OOC

Not quite sure how these things are operating. If they're counting as something like individual creatures for combat purposes, Aradin uses Steel Wind to attack two of them. Not sure if attacking them is even valid. If they're really thin, I may be able to smash through a lot with one blow, without need for Steel Wind. So yeah, interpret my rolls as you see fit. (NO power attack).

Jallorn glares at the creature after recovering from the momentary shock of being hit. "You know," He says calmly says, "My grandmother taught me a lot, but my mother taught me a good deal also. And it's time for me to teach you something my mother taught me: Never dish out something you can't take yourself!", his voice grows louder as he continues to speak,"Now, time for you to learn the name of this technique: Mother's Love!". His proclamation finishes with a savage cry, and another burst of energy fires at the monster.

OOC
Jallorn moves 10 ft away from the monster as a move action, then fires off another Death Coil as a standard action.

Round 3 -- Fight!
The Creature: 18
Rosy: 14
Mows: 13
Jack: 12
Aradin: 11
Jallorn: 4

Rosy does nothing.

Mows isn't spotted by anyone as he hides in the bushes.

Jack continues to confront the creature head-on, but misses all of his attacks.

Aradin hits the creature, full on! His blade cuts through scales and sinew, severing almost half of the fin-arms of the creature.

(Basically, I'm treating them as a part of the creature, but targetable if specifically mentioned as the target, dealing damage to the creature and preventing it from using them again to cover its back to increase its natural armor or to attack its enemies. The back is also targetable seperately, if specifically mentioned as the target.)

Jallorn misses the creature.

The Creature
The creature shrieks and then seems to concentrate, causing a green flame to pop up on its wide forehead. It then attacks Aradin with all of its remaining stilty fin-arms, but misses him completely.

Mows: 13
Jack: 12
Aradin: 11
Jallorn: 4

Rosy chucks the inscribed rune stone at the creature, hitting it in the face with a cold blast that makes the flame shrink!

Mows, still not visible to the others, chucks his grenade at the creature.

Jack's attacks now rip and tear, the creature letting out shrieks of fear as its natural plating comes apart.

And with a final strike from Aradin, the creature goes down!

XP Gained
All gain 540 XP.

Then something strange happens... the creature arcs its back as it lets out a mind-searing shriek and doubles-up on itself as its skin bursts into green and orange flame in hellish display. It stands on its rear legs and falls back into the water, its spindly fin-arms grasping and becoming rigid stalks as they drill into the water, splashing. The creature's body elongates with a sickening noise and its wide maw bites the opposite shore. Its burning fin-arms sizzle harshly as the water they touch rapidly turns into steam, covering the entire area in thick bands of fog. Through it, the companions can just barely see a newly formed bridge. A bridge made out of bone...

You notice that with the evaporation of so much water, you can no longer see the river. In fact, it seems like you can stare very far down...

Jallorn (and Aradin)
Jallorn must make a Balance check, DC 12, or fall down on the wobbly bone bridge, for trying to rush across it. (:smalltongue:)

Failure by 5 or more means he'll fall of the bridge.

Everyone but Jallorn
The bridge is stable enough that you can walk across it without needing to make Balance checks, but as soon as Jallorn rushes across, the bone bridge begins to shake. Balance check, DC 8, or fall down on the bridge. Failure by 5 or more means you'll fall off the bridge.

As the crew of four (and their cat, too!) crossed the bridge, the mists parted slightly, revealing the town just ahead, crooked trees looming overhead and a doorless gate standing over the entrance.

Witsville
Founded 923
Population 82

The buildings appear to be made of logs of white wood and generally don't have more than one extra floor. Most buildings aren't big and only a few seem to be something other than houses. A tall clock tower stands looming darkly ahead, it's clock shining with a vivid, toxic green glow. The town looks almost deserted, but sounds of iron striking iron can be heard coming from the edge of town and tunes of the blues accompanying chatter comes from one of the larger buildings.
