At first blush, an Arctic Dwarf (Races of Faerun) headed into Frostrager (Frostburn) would seem a reasonable and flavorful progression. However, an Arctic Dwarf's abilities read, in part, as "Immune to cold [damage]", while Frostrager requires the character to have been reduced to 0 HP or below by cold damage, among other prerequisites.

Is there a reasonable workaround that doesn't rely on the DM applying Handwavium?

Are they immune to cold via the [Cold] subtype? Or just because they are resiliant? If they DON'T have the [Cold] subtype, a caster could use Piercing Cold to freeze them. Its a feat in Frostburn. While superficially similar to Searing Spell (the Sandstorm version), it does NOT penetrate the [Cold] subtype.

The ability reads simply as "Immune to cold."

EDIT: Re-reading Piercing Cold, it appears to exactly meet my needs. Apparently I had a moment of derp in forgetting about it. Thanks for the reminder.

Then Piercing Cold would work.

Also, cold has stopped sounding like a word. Cold cold cold.

Don't forget to find some brown mold! If you get Fireballed while you are Frostraging, the mold will get huge and heal you back a decent amount of the HPs you lost from the Fireball.

Might not be so good for your allies though.
