I plan on starting a Let's Play soon, and I've been looking into screen-capturing software. The problem is, all the software I've found either has horrible video quality (CamStudio) or needs you to pay for it (GameCam). Does anyone in the Playground know good screen-capturing software that's free?

I can't find anything on the site suggesting I can use it to make a video Let's Play...

I used Camtasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camtasia_Studio) once, for an assignment. My professor told us to use that one specifically. It wasn't the best, though.... I think it limits how many times you can use it, but I'm not sure.

Check through this list otherwise. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_screencasting_software)

Can I use it to capture what's occurring on the monitor of my computer?

Yeah, Camtasia is good except for the fee for it. 30 day trial, than $300 bucks for the full version.:smalleek:

According to the "What is Irfanview?" page, yes.

Cool. Might have to download it then.

Procaster might be a decent choice. It's the streaming program for livestream but it also records what you're streaming. It also has an inbuilt audio mixer and a few other nice things. Of course, depending on the game, your comp kinda needs to be up to the task. Mine struggles slightly with 720p video using Photoshop and SAI with firefox in the background. Although it runs ok with games...

So yeah, that's my 2 cents (:

Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/download.php)? You can activate screen capture mode from within the game via a hotkey.

I looked into FRAPs, but the free version records only thirty seconds per video. It'd take 100 videos just to get through the Super Duper Mart in Fallout 3.

Well, apart from checking Camstudio (http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/files/legacy/) you could also have a look at Debut Video Capture (http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html), which has an option to both record ingame audio and mic. (which, as it seems, is a rare feature.)

Both are freeware, which is a plus.
