Are there ways to turn a non-Area of Effect spell into an Area of Effect spell?

Sculpt spell (complete arcane), split ray, chain spell. Which spells are you looking at?

The item Lens of Ray Widening in Lords of Madness will do it. It takes a ray and turns it into a cone; only problem is that there's a flat DC 15 Ref save to avoid it on top of the spell's normal save, so it's only really useful against mook types at higher levels.

It also requires you to have eye stalks ala a Beholder.

Does sculpt turn rays into touch? Duskblade?

Nope, that's the best part. The widening lens functions as the chaining lens, which says:

A spellcaster can use a lens of ray chaining as an additional focus component to chain a ray spell as long as he holds the lens in one hand.

Rays, mostly. Split Ray and Chain Spell don't turn them into AoE though, they just add additional targets. I'm looking to change the attack roll into a Reflex save and actually cover an area rather than target creatures specifically.

That's prettymuch perfect, aside from the DC. Are there ways to do it without items though?
