Why might a Githzerai be in the material plane? I need a back story as to why my character is in the material plane in the first place.

Illithid hunting is always a good reason. As is gathering info on some Githyanki activity in an area.

Renegade that got sick of living in Limbo and wanted to set up somewhere nice and kooshy to live.

They're canonically a race of planar ascetic wanderers. You could literally find one anywhere.

From the XPH pg. 12:

"Githzerai are self-sufficient and form few attachments to home or family. As a result, many are noted wanderers who need little reason to set off on journeys across the planes. To a githzerai, the physical journey is a metaphor for the inner one, and many adventurers are content to pass year after year in remote Material Plane lands."
