I asked this question in the RAW sticky but I suspect there is no real RAW answer so i'll ask it here...

Do lingering effects end the effect of the spell Hesitate (PHBII pg 114) , for example suppose that a beguiler had cast the spell Inevitable Defeat (PhII pg 115) and then at some point the beguiler cast hesitate on that creature, on that creature's turn when he needs to make a save or take damage --- does the effect of hesitate end?

Since the spell says that attacking ends the effect as opposed to taking damage ending the effect, I'd say that lingering damage wouldn't affect Hesitate. In my mind it would be like casting a DoT spell then casting invisibility on yourself. You attacked once, and only once. The damage applied after the first attack wouldn't render your invisibility dispelled, nor should it end Hesitate.
