So I'm starting a campaign where the level 3 party is serving as escorts for a Spellscale(for story purposes) Diplomat Bard of level 2. The campaign setting is one where magic use is very rare(no PC full casters) but where magic items are still common place. The players are very much non-optimizers and already have a monk and a paladin(cha casting houserule). The bottom line is that I'm afraid for the Bard's life and was wondering if there're any good magic items that might make me feel more reassured without making the character feel indestructible to the point that the party feels like they can ignore protecting the guy, so far the only thing I've equipped him with a Belt of Healing so he can heal himself during his turns(his Melodic Casting should let him sing too).

Anklet of Translocation (1400gp, MIC) lets him, 2/day as a swift action, teleport 10ft. Chronocharms of the Horizon Walker (500gp, MIC) let him, 1/day as a swift action, move 1/2 his move speed. He can use these to run away from any danger that may pop up unexpectedly. Healing, while nice, won't be so useful to a d6 chassis because a single blow is likely to knock the guy out.

you can also go with simple defensive scrolls, potions and/or wands: reduce person, shield, shield of faith, blur, protection from arrows, invisibility... they may help him in a fight or two, but tthey don't make him indestructible, and once the potions are over...

perhaps some ring or another of shield other, that he gives one of the other characters- they suffer half the damage he takes. might make them watn to defend him MUCH better, and he can mooch on their hp.

A belt of health or something else that increases constitution would increase his hit points.

You can give him armoured mage as a bonus feat and a set of mithral full plate to increase his AC.

A magic instrument like a Fochlucan Bandore or similar would be helpful, but wouldn't really help survivability.

A wand of cure light wounds would be nice.

Give him two sets of rings of friendship (shield other), and also give them a telepathy effect between the wearers.

He wears one ring from each set, the party members wear the other two. Now he can communicate with the other wearer of hte set.

Perhaps use the slave/master rings as well from DotU or Underdark (I forget), so the party members can't remove the rings as soon as they discover the shield other effect.
Finally, make sure the damage only goes one way (to party), and that he can stop the effect when he desires, like when the paladin is dying at -2 HP. The diplomat wouldn't want the paladin to take 20 damage and just die outright, would he?
As a balancing effect, when the diplomat takes a healing a potion, the wearers of the rings also get a minor benefit.

Yes, this is very much a custom item, but that's the benefit of being DM. You can create custom items when you want.
