Say you're on a plane which is separate from all three of the transitive planes (nevermind how you got there :smalltongue:). What happens to the stuff in your bag of holding and portable hole? Can you access it?

Yes, you can use them as normal. Bags of Holding/Portable Holes don't use the Astral/Ethereal/Shadow planes for storage; they're self-contained dimensions of their own. The only way you lose access to them is if the magic gets suppressed, in which case you can't open that pocket dimension. The stuff is still there, you just can't get to it until you get normal magic back. (What happens if you have to shove them together and get that '10 ft rift to the Astral' effect when you can't actually access the Astral, tho.. that's an interesting question.)

So, even though bags of holding want Leomund's secret chest, which is on the ethereal plane, as the spell cast when you're making them, they don't actually use the ethereal? That was where I got hung up.

many kinds of item have powers that do not fully adhere to the spells needed to create them. the spell requirement is thematic only i think...

there was this one bloody hilarious adventure In Knights of the Dinner table, when the laws of bags of holding were more confused, wherethe party hired an army and hid it in the bag (who supposedly opened to a huge inter dimensional space. the party also held a great deal of treasure there, which the DM wanted to get rid of...

so the army rebelled, and tried to make a small kingdom IN the bag of holding, denying access to the bag's users! then they found out some whacky theory that all bags of holdings were connected, and searched for another to take the adventure into bags-of-holdings-space after their treasure, against the entrenched army...

/derailment... sorry.
