View Full Version : 'http' Redirect?

I'm just curious. Why does the site not have an http -> www redirect, instead preferring to shunt people to a 404 page?

I recently realized that this is what's tripping up my Firefox automatic url completion...

I assume it's because of firefox, as my firefox has removed http:// completely.

Yes, it's a Firefox specific problem, in that Firefox hides the http:// prefix, probably so as to not confuse the general user.

Doesn't exactly help to solve my problem though... :/

http Redirect.

Basically, when a user types "example.com" into their address bar, they're literally attempting to access the directory "http://example.com". Nearly every website in existence has a DNS redirect from "http://example.com/" to "http://www.example.com/".

A similar mechanic is used for sites that use subdomains to manage their website. A good example might be Valve. Everything is run under the top level domain "http://steampowered.com/", while the Store and Forums are located under "http://forums.steampowered.com/" and "http://store.steampowered.com/" (note the lack of www here).

Try it again. This site has had it for years. Hence my confusion.

I just typed giantitp.com into the address bar of a new tab and it worked just fine...

Only on the root domain though? Attempting to put in 'giantitp.com/forums/' routes me back to the 404 page (though my real goal here is to be able to autocomplete to get to my UserCP).

giantitp.com/forums/usercp.php

Seems to work fine for me.

giantitp.com redirects me to the "main" page. giantitp.com/forums/usercp.php works.

If it's a Firefox problem, it must be for the newest version. I haven't bothered to update Firefox for a while and I have no problems.

Interesting. Still not working on my end. What version(s) of Firefox are you guys running, where it is working?

It works fine for me, and I am running Firefox 7.0.1 (the most current version) on Windows Vista SP1.

That's still a supported/maintained version. Ironically, 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x, aren't.

Hmm... maybe it's a problem with me specifically. Perhaps a reinstall is in the works.

Just tried it on a school computer. Typing "giantitp.com/forums/index.php" into the address bar redirects me to the 404 page. Adding a "www." in front of it gets me where I want to go. Using firefox 3.6.18 on linux.

Not that I ever really care about this issue. I have the base forum page in my history, so I type something like "giantit" then "down arrow" and "enter" to get to the forum. And if I didn't have the site in my history at all, I would start with "giantitp.com" not the forum because I cannot remember the exact address for the forum.

giantitp.com/forums on Firefox 7.0.1 redirects to giantitp.com.

giantitp.com/forums on Firefox 7.0.1 redirects to giantitp.com.

Not on mine it doesn't.

EDIT: It goes to where it's supposed to go.

Never tried this before. I'm using Chrome, and if I type giantitp.com/forums I'm redirected to the homepage, if I type giantitp.com/forums/usercp.php I get a 404 page. So it isn't just a Firefox problem. Rawhide, are you sure the server is set up to redirect from http://giantitp.com/(whatever) to http://www.giantitp.com(whatever)? It is possible to set up your site to only redirect for the homepage, which is what appears to be happening here.

Yes, I'm certain. If it's not working correctly it must be inheriting a different setting from somewhere. Oh well, no big deal. I'll look into it some time when I do a slightly more major upgrade.

Okay, I thought I would try something. I typed giantitp.com/comics/oots0812.html instead, thinking maybe only the forum had the problem. But I still got a 404. So actually that wasn't terribly helpful. I thought I would report it anyways.

Oh, okay, so I'm not actually going nuts here. That's good.

So my problem appears to be limited to the Firefox 8.0 Beta in Windows. It works fine in OSX, under FF7 Beta.

Okay, I checked with Opera v11.51 (I think), and the redirect actually works fine for that browser. Weird. My version of Chrome is 14.0.835.202 I think. Maybe that is helpful?

Simply typing in giantitp.com/forums works perfectly fine for me in Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer.

Personally I think it is probably something other than browser/version that is causing this.

I don't even have to type the .com.

If I type giantitp into my browser search bar, minus the http, .com and www, I still end up in the right place.

Firefox version 3.6.23.

It's a problem relating to the forums specifically. What you've described is the normal behavior, as Firefox's addressbar defaults to Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" search if it doesn't find a valid address. At least, that's what it used to do anyway...

What happens when you do:

giantitp.com/forums

Thank you, but we don't require any further troubleshooting. It will remain the way it currently behaves until some time in the future.
