I prefer Scout 4/Cloistered Cleric 2/Prestige Ranger 14 with Swift Hunter, Knowledge Devotion, and Travel Devotion (but this requires a minor house rule to let Swift Hunter work with PrC Ranger).

I've never even heard of prestige ranger...what's that all about?

Unearthed Arcana. It's ranger, but as a prestige class.

The problem with the basic question is that there are so MANY uses for Ranger. A great MANY of them are the best ever.

However, most of them involve Mystic Ranger (Dragon Mag 336). :smallamused:

Don't forget about all the fun things you can do on a Wildshape Ranger (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm) chassis.

Ranger
A ranger might forgo training in weapon combat in exchange for the ability to take animal form and move swiftly through the woodlands.

Gain
Wild shape (as druid; Small or Medium animals only), fast movement (as barbarian).

Lose
Combat style, improved combat style, combat style mastery.

Typical builds are often Ranger5/MasterofManyForms2/Warshaper4/MoMF+8/NaturesWarrior1

or something very similar.
