Free forum software

I was wondering if such a thing existed. So would any playgrounders know of one?

Sure they do. phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) is pretty common. There's plenty of others, a Google search on "free forum software" spits out a few.

I don't know a lot about setting them up myself. The vibe I've heard is that with free forum software you'll need to worry more about security, as the hackers and spambots know a lot more about the software's vulnerabilities, but I don't know how much of that is due to popularity rather than issue with the code.

There sure are. There are also sites which will host your forum for free; just search for "free forums". They're pretty good at eliminating spam, provided you're careful about who you let post. Some are public, meaning anyone can post to your forum but you don't have to clean up any spam. It's their problem.
