View Full Version : Crazy Man Attempts Nuzlocke of Platinum.

So this'll be my first documented Nuzlocke challenge, and I've decided to go through Platinum. I've done Emerald and Fire Red already, but through this run, I'll leave choices up to you guys. I'll offer my own suggestions, but they won't count any more heavily than yours. This will be similar to (and was inspired by) Ilven's Nuzlocke of Emerald, found here. Like Ilven, I'll tell the story mostly through screen shots with text. Let's get this thing started, shall we?

Rules

1. If a Pokemon faints, it must be boxed forever afterward, never to be used again; it is dead. The starter is exempt from this rule.

2. Only the first Pokemon seen in each area may be caught. An exception exists for pokemon already in my Pokedex, but other evolutions of Pokemon I own count. (For example, if I own a Starly and I see a Staravia, the Staravia counts. However, if I caught a Starly and it evolved into Staravia, then any Staravia I see doesn't count.) Shinies are also exempt from this rule, since they are so rare. Routes 201 and 202 don't count in this rule until I obtain Pokeballs.

Bruce is an American college student who is enamored with the world of comic books and D&D. He finds himself dissatisfied with the growing popularity of the antihero in his culture, wishing that modern heroes were more like Superman or knights. He makes a promise to himself that, if ever given the chance, he'll be a hero like that. One day, Bruce's best friend, Zack (known affectionately as Cody), tells him about this new psychoactive drug called Dreamer that supposedly makes people see visions that they can control the of the nature of. After extensive research to make sure that this drug isn't illegal, Bruce decides to try it. His hope is that, even if he can't be a hero in real life, perhaps he can be one in a vision.

Zuko is a Turtwig on a quest to restore his honor, which he lost in a currently-unknown manner. He enjoys witty one-liners and fluffing his language with phrases that he considers to be "knightly." He appreciates Bruce's dedication to being a hero.

So, which starter should Bruce pick? Feel free to make suggestions for Pokemon, names, and personalities. I'll stop the voting after a certain amount of time, depending on how many people respond. My suggestions (which, once again, carry no more weight in this challenge than anyone else's) are the following:
1. Chimchar: Ponsley. Doesn't want to fight; just wants to mellow out and "party." (Alignment: TN/NG)
2. Piplup: Macaroni. Fiercely loyal, but not very intelligent. Trusts Bruce almost immediately. (Alignment: TN/NG/LN)
3. Turtwig: Simon (Male) or Lolita (Female). Self-proclaimed genius. Has an alleged I.Q. of 160, but has no real proof to back this up. (Alignment: TN).

As for name, I'm not sure, but I feel that your starter's personality should reflect your own, however you go about it. This is the one pokemon where Bruce will get to make a choice as opposed to catching whatever comes, and the choice should reflect one of the pokemon standing out as someone he can get along with. Given your brief personality writeup of wanting someone more chivalrous, I'd suggest the starter having a similar personality, being LG and wanting to protect/defend Bruce and his future allies.

Primarily, it's a run through a pokemon game where you can only use a 'mon until it faints, at which point you treat it as dead. There are other rules, such as you can't buy items from shops, you can only catch a certain amount of mon(usually 1, sometimes 2) from any given route.

Well a nuzlocke doesn't have to include a can't buy items from shops rules

The 2 basic rules are

1) You may only catch one pokemon in an area typically the first one you seen (What is counted as an area is up to the individual)

2) A pokemon that faints is dead. Whether it is boxed forever or released is up to the individual.


Then there are variants such as a sololocke (Only one pokemon is used for the whole run) Limited items, Dupe clause (A pokemon that you have caught before does not count as the first encounter) A shiny exception. And many other variants

It's named after a comic strip of the same name, where the main character did this sort of challenge. It's a combination of the Pokemon Nuzleaf and John Locke. I find the reference to Locke almost ironic, personally, since he was so much about freedom, and this challenge is so restrictive. Maybe it's because it forces you to look at things in a different way and try something new? Or maybe I'm missing something. Anyway, Sorry for prattling on. I'm sure someone can explain it better.

Well the first person to create this challenge was a really big fan of Lost and he named his Seedot/Nuzleaf John-Locke or something close to that. And the Nuzleaf's death was a big plot point. So Nuzlocke is a combination of the two names.

Personally I prefer to think of him as Peter Wiggins



Edit: Also I wasn't aware that there was a comic before this. I had always assumed that the challenge was first done by a guy who got stuck early on with nothing but a Nuzleaf, and so the term for being stuck with no way to go on became being "nuzzlocked", the name of the challenge would naturally flow from that.

In fact in retrospect I like my reasoning more than the way it actually happened. It is my personal canon.

Also apparently that comic is even worse about updating than most of the others I read. It's been sitting just one comic away from being finished for 3 months waiting for the last update. That's frickin ridiculous.

I understand; it bothers me, too. You have no idea how long I tried to figure out how to do this. I'm not the most skilled with pictures and whatnot, so if anyone has any ideas of how to do this, they'd be much appreciated.

I could explain how to do it one at a time, but with as many screenshots as you're messing with it'd be a huge time sink. I'm not aware of any way to have it automatically only capture the top or how you could auto crop a large group of images at once.

For what it's worth I prefer Xonodure's personalities (Especially for Bidoof, Shinx, and Kriketot). I don't much care about the names.
