...The Oasys OoC Thread.
To be honest, not terribly useful, but I try (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10861926#post10861926).

...what has gone before...
The Original Party, consisting of Jake Smith, fighter, bard and leader; Welby Bolger, prodigal halfling sorceror; Daina Lightfingers, a thief of dubious abilities; Dranga Skaldsdotter, a dwarven wizard; Bob Foapple, a frankly useless 'expert'; Snake the Shadowdancer, an elf with an unusual tongue; Trevor Dormic, a cleric even more useless than Bob; Jim 'James' Porter, a thug, who never even made it inside the Tomb, and finally Quin Rockshield, a dwarven cleric of Moradin.
The Original Party, sans Quin, had recently ended an encounter with a purple worm demi-lich archmage, and while the cleric of Moradin had agreed to catchup, arrived at the town of Half-moon Row.
There, the parents and mayor beseeched the noble adventurers to rescue their children who'd disappeared under mysterious circumstances in a swamp...
...another party had gone forth and screams through the night were all that remained of them.
Upon crossing the swamp, the party passed through an eerie forest of black and dead elms until they arrived at the lonely hill...
...resting for the night, it was discovered James had been murdered during the night-nailed to one of the black elms with branches while he was still alive...
On the hill, the Original Party faced initial difficulties , facing a crushing and false entrance until finally, they found the Entrance to the Tomb of Horrors...
Trevor was killed in a pit trap, and by the time Quin had finally caught up, they'd fought a four-armed gargoyle, one of the Tombs guardians...
'Scouting' ahead, deadly traps and dangers were faced by Quin and Daina alone, particularly in a Chapel of Evil, until finally, the Party rejoined in the Hall of Spheres to rest.
Then, young Welby was visited by a maddened vampire, one of Acererak's victims, and she brutally murdered all but Quin, mimicking Daina with its magics...
...at this time, Eduardo, Master of Death; Pharrah, his Apprentice, Maki the Barbarian; and Shudu, the Honor-bound Scout made there way into the Tomb, quitelikely led by Dresden, the emissary of the gods who worked to help the heroes defeat Acererak.
In the settling dust of the vampire's attack, traps were set off, and the dead Snake and Bob were left in the Hall, while the New Party faced illusions, all-to-real snakes, and the return of a four-armed golem at the side of another shape-shifting vampire...
It became apparent that Acererak's power was great, when Snake resurrected as a Dust Zombie, was defeated at Eduardo's hand, making for the advance into the lair of the false Acererak.
Therein, the party found a quick victory against a decidely pitiful foe, with more style then danger...
...from there, after avoiding a deadly trip to the Plane of Fire, the Party gained new members: Pete Palkleth, Prescott the Wizard, and Thoradin, a Dwarven Defender.
Their party had been ambushed on the Ethereal Plane, and the three survivors locked inside Pharra's magic chest...
...suspicions were quickly set aside for the defeat of Acererak and the foiling of his dark plan.
Facing an evil mirror, dark oozes and vorpal blades, the Heroes didn't balk at an arisen Bob, returned as a Blood Zombie.
They were triumphant against singing undead and brought down a Dracolich, and now, they do battle within Acererak's Throneroom, bringing the fight directly to Acererak's final resting place.
Facing off against another of the Tomb's victims, known only as the Beginning, the Heroes have divided into two teams to end Acererak's threat even as the evil demi-lich appears to grow stronger and stronger, reaching out to touch the world through his undead and the very utterance of his name...
...do they have the strength? The courage? The power?
They must, for if they don't, they all the world will fall victim to...
The Tomb of Horrors!

Round 2/3
Harley
The Beginning, Pharrah
Pete
Maki
Daina
Thoradin
Hassadur
---------
Dranga
Prescott
Eduardo, Quin
Winky
Leonard

"Maki! What happened!"

As Quin leaps from the sarcophagus, Harley and Eduardo throw themselves out of his way, avoiding any determined and biting Scarabs. As he reaches to slam the door, he remembers that the Mummy Lord has smashed it to splinters after exiting.
The Scarabs get a good chomp into the cleric, and begin to burrow into his skin, making the tissue in his upper leg bubble and pop.
Pharrah still holds Leonard in her arms, "Stop! Stop! What's going on..."
Harley and Eduardo see the sarcophagus is rapidly becoming full, the bottom completely disappearing from sight.
They look at each other, then beat a hasty retreat.
"Perhaps I can rebuke or turn them out of them before they begin to breed..."
"But, they're undead!"
"Scarabs don't do much. But breed. I can't imagine being undead would stop them from doing that..."
"Merciful heavens..."
Quin reaches the throne, and sees he's got a drop ahead of him.
The scarabs continue to burrow deeper and deeper.

Pete looses his arrow into the empty hole where the throne once was and watches it ricochet off of the floor of the passage below before quickly climbing down. When he reaches the bottom he peers ahead using the light from his boots to see if the passage leads anywhere.
Daina watches Pete make his way up the throne steps with a frown.
Pete feels a decidely footlike presence come in contact with his chest, powerfully blocking him from going any further.
It recedes for a moment, and then the kick sends him backwards with great force.
"Sleeping Tiger Style: Middle Leg Strike 23! Acererak permits spellcasters beyond only!"
A message for Pete alone to hear.
"Masterful technique! How may I address you?"
"Call me 'The Beginning'"

Maki steels himself as he looks at his leg ... a drop of sweat runs down through his face as he tries to envision the scarabs crowling inside... then he strikes...
" ARRGHH.... "
Vile creatures! Away!
Eduardo releases a surge of profane energy, commanding the scarabs away with his will as he sprints along with the others to safety.
Maki stands at the very edge of Quin's reach, but the faint ball of healing energy manages to sink into the barbarian's leg, filling the bubbling flesh with healing magic.
The Scarabs in Maki and Quin, hiss and scream, bursting forth from dwarf and barbarian skin, only to be directly assaulted by Eduardo's Rebuke.
The scarabs flee and burn and die, making piteous sounds as they escape from their attempted hosts.
Helpful as always, Winky blasts a particularly largew specimen with his searing light, and the undead insect instantly bursts into flame.
"Ewwwwwwwww!"
Cool and collected as always, Hassadur maintains a stern surveillance of Eduardo's immediate space.
Daina, still unsure of what to do, runs back to the Crypt to check on the scarabs.
The pillars continue their descent, with only ten feet of column remaining, light is fading.
Standing with Winky in the darkening room, Prescott looks from Quin to Maki to the thieves and back again. "So... is everyone alright then? What was that all about? Did you make these columns recede?[/
Harley nods, "There's a mechanism within the sarcophagi that lower the columns... I don't see how we'll be able to undo it... They're full of scarabs now..."
" Ok... Lets not do that again... Now i guess we should explore the other part of the crypt? "
He looks at Maki, grimacing at the bubbling wounds on Maki's leg.
"Beneath the throne? Or through the room with the weapons and shields? It's got another door."
Scarabs vanquished, Eduardo is still a tad uneasy. Probably the rooms to the north are nothing more than traps and bizarre diversions. The sinking throne held far more interest for the Master.
As Eduardo walks south toward Pete and the now-empty plinth, he can't help but consider the symbolism of the throne and its descent into the earth. So many stories of the underworld hinged on a downward journey... and the throne certainly painted a mental image of Acererack as King of the Underworld.
Was the throne room and the adjoining passage designed to intimidate would-be invaders? Or was it a mere display of ego? Most likely, Eduardo would never know for sure.

Maki stares at his bubling leg with disgust.
" That cant be good... Does anyone have some water or something? "
Dropping his torch, Harley joins Dranga and Leonard in applying a bandage to Maki's leg wound.
Dranga tears up a scrap of cloth, while Leonard and Harley hold it tight.
"Quin's healing magic might be all well and good, but you never know what those things might do, I guess."
Dranga stomps a fleeing scarab angrily.
Quin takes a second to heal himself completely before healing Maki and any of the others who were injured. He then examines the steps carefully before looking around at the others asking "Should we descend now?"

"May I ask The Beginning what Acererak has against spellcasters?"
Lamech stretches, forcing the silk rope bearing his weight to swing him nearer and nearer to his prize."May I ask The Beginning what Acererak has against spellcasters?"
He gasps, a clot of blood bursting from the thief's nose and is backswing is a ragged affair.
Lamech's grip slips, and the spikes below, lining the pit surrounding the idol become all to near.
As he makes the slow swing forward again, Lamech blanks out, and luckily doesn't have to see how near to a ten foot spear a man can truly get.
"Acererak is a demi-lich of great power and renown. There is nothing for the mundane beyond here. I promise you, I shall test your might in a most satisfactory contest. Believe it."
"Yes, I believe you could explore the exact limitations of my abilities. Might I first know what outcomes could potentially await me after such an examination?"
"Isn't it obvious?"
But the odds are slim, Quin's healing magic appears to knit the broken skin and chewed flesh back together no problem...
..so while the dwarf's magic appears to be flawless, Eduardo may question his own when the Mysterious Warrior, or The Beginning, makes himself known.
The Greater Invisibility magic of the suit dispels across different body parts at a time, slowly unraveling to reveal the man.
The suit is made of one piece, and runes glow across its surface.
Across his chest, a bandlier with white metal knives hang, and a sword handle extends above his shoulder.
"Greetings, Master of Death and Moradin's Fist! You have reached the point where your noble fellowship must part ways..."
Daina draws her bow, slapping two arrows and pulling to aim directly at the Mysterious Warrior.
"Who are you? And what do you mean, 'end'?"
""It is time for 'End Game'.""
Harley snarls.
"What are you talking about! Where is he?"
"Beyond! But you have no place there... Your quarrel is with me..."
Harley laughs, "If you're standing in Eduardo and Quin's way, I'll say your quarrel with all of us won't last long..."
The single slit indicating eye holes angles toward the Master.
"Out. Go. The. Lights."
With a crushing sound, the columns complete their descent leaving the Throneroom in darkness.
Pharrah laughs, "We're not afraid of the dark. And how do you expect to beat all of us alo-"
Eduardo suddenly senses undead presences.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd57/OasysWebmaster/tombguard.png

"I am not alone, but have no doubts between you and I, this will be a battle between you and I alone, and if you play by my rules, you still have a chance to stop the nightmare, and become the legends..."
In a flash of black lightning across the suit, The Beginning draws his sword, a straight-edged blade covered in deep runes.
As the black lightning fades into the suit, he pants.
"I can't begin to tell you how good that feels! I've never felt so alive! Do we have a deal!?!?!?!?"
Eduardo's mace ignites, shedding a glorious halo of light around the Master.
A deal? What nonsense are you talking about? Why should we make any deal with you? You're saying... what? If we agree to split up, you'll fight half of us? Why shouldn't we just put an end to this right now, when we are strongest and you are weakest?
He takes a small step forward.
Or better yet, you can step aside and point the way to Acererack, and we'll let you remain feeling alive.

Friends, be warned, undead lurk in this darkness. Be on your guard.
"You may cast what spells you will upon them, noble cleric."
The Beginning bows to Quin.
Quin asks "Why should we leave those who can not use magic to you? And what lies beyond this passage? Are we permitted to leave them with a few parting words?"
He then bows to Maki, "I look forward to testing your rage..."
" That sounds just right... "
Maki says as he turns the magic of his flaming sword on... He holds the blade close to his face.
" I dont know what got you into that suit... Or made you follow Acererak's commands... But my Grandfather would roll on his grave if i didnt accept a 1 on 1 with you "
He then bows to Eduardo, "Your magic cannot touch me. None of it can. Not while I where this suit-"
Pharrah laughs, "We'll see about that!"
Magic Missiles fly from her outstretched hand, arcing above their heads, only to split around him and slam into the wall.
"-this glorious, glorious suit. There is nothing for your spellcasters here. And there is nothing for your allies beyond. If you remain here. I will kill you all. If you do as I say, as Acererak wills. You stand a chance to defeat him once and for all."He pauses.

"But do not think you abandon your friends to their fate with me. This Throneroom has connections to Acererak's marshalling battlefield..."
Dranga and Leonard shriek, almost as if to confirm their suspicions, and a pair of skeletons clad in black armor materialise above the steel circles indicating where the columns had sunk below.
"...if your friends do not engage me here. They will follow you into Acererak's stronghold and murder all they find. Old and young..."
The Beginning, interpreting Eduardo's step forward as agreement, steps aside, leaving the path open.
"By my honour, I won't follow after you until your friends are dead. And if they defeat me, I will tell them how to follow you."
"M-master... That's supposed to be impossible!"
Eduardo has no way of knowing what is beyond the suit. For all he knows, its a construct or the suit shields whatever is inside...
His accent, comes from the East...
And though the helmet and the suit distort his voice, there is a weight of truth...
...and honor to his words.
He means what he says.
And will live, or atleast die again by them.
You sound almost as if you want us to defeat Acererack. Yet, you do his bidding. This is a trick... a trap. There is no other explanation, whether you are aware of its nature, or not.
Wait, did you not help us before? In the fight against the vampire? "Help will come to those who help others," you said. Join us, if you mean what you say. Help us end Acererack's reign.
More violent images of death across the world rock Eduardo's mind...
Men and women cry out as Acererak draws power from the utterance of his name, and strikes down the living.
A message loud and clear.
"Don't be a fool. I only helped you so Acererak could kill you himself. You said it yourself Master of Death, this is a trap... For you all."
"What ARE his plans!"
"I am merely one more of his unwilling servants. My appearance of free will is merely to amuse him. Come! I thirst for battle! And you've kept me waiting long enough... Can you be the ones to finally kill me?"
At Maki's question, the suit freezes.
" I have only one more question before i beat whatever's inside that suit to a pulp... "
Maki says as he holds up the sword in front of him once again...
" Who are... no.... Who were you? "
"I-I remember, this was not my home... I come from a land to the East, where I trained my body, mind and soul to master unarmed combat from every Master..."
He shudders as his eyes gaze into the undead mirrors.
"I remember being a good man... Loving a good woman... Finding out she thought I would make a good father... And then, we came to meet Acererak HERE!"
He screams a long sorrowful cry, raging at the ceiling.
"KILL ME!"
As his body twists and turns in his rage, glowing white nodes appears can be seen along his spine.
Nine of them.
From here the runes that dot the armor originate in patterns that spiral outward.
" WISH GRANTED!! "
MAKI CHARGES WITH RAGE!! THE BATTLE SCREAM ECHOES THROUGH THE WALLS OF THE TOMB AS SPARKS FLY THROUGH THE AIR!
The sword whips around in a glowing circle just in time, holding Maki and Te Beginning in a fierce sword lock, face to mask.
Eyes to slit.
"How. Long. Can. You. Last."

"I can protect one of you from the brunt of the effects of Negative Energy. I can also protect us all from one type of elemental energy. I can also turn one person slightly undead, to protect your vitals. Beyond that, I can only hide us all from the undead. I am sorry I can't offer anything else. Who wishes what protections?
I see no other option than to continue onward. The suit is obviously warded against spells of the level we can cast and lower. We would need highly advanced magics to defeat this suit. Given 5 years, I would not hesitate. But now, we must press on. I do not believe you will be slaughtered, as you are all gifted."

Eduardo grits his teeth and grips the mace tightly in his fist. If this wretched creature wanted death, the Master would gladly pound him into dust...
But that wasn't the deal, and no doubt, The Beginning would focus fire on soft targets like Prescott and Dranga if they didn't clear the room soon.
He turns to Pete, Thoradin and Maki. Confident as the Master is of their abilities, he cannot help see them as what they now were: a sacrifice in some cosmic game, pawns of the gods. Acererack was maneuvering the pieces into place, and leaving them little choice in how the final board would be set.
Obviously the Barbarian had no problem meeting this man in combat, even if it meant his death, but what did the cautious ranger and brave dwarf think of the challenge?
If they consented to the agreement, the Master would honor it. He waits for their response.

Prescott saw Eduardo weighing their options, and sizing up the group. He mulled over the choices himself. Quin, Eduardo, and Pharrah could hold their own in a melee, even if their spells could not aid them directly against this suited menace. Dranga and he both had polymorphs at their disposal, and he had two scrolls of greater invisibility that would buffer them. Not to mention additional illusions Prescott could bring to bear. For all its enchantments, the suit did not have defenses against those counters from the wizard's scan of the other suit.

Seeing Maki's premptive strike, Daina takes ahold of The Master of Death.
"Eduardo, I saw this place in my Dark Fate... Pete, Shudu and I kneel before the Throne, and Acererak touches each of us on the forehead, and when the throne descends, we enter, and when we return, we lead his armies across the world..."
She shudders.
"I can't go beyond this room..."
She squeezes her eyes shut.
"If you see Pete or me, or even Shudu, follow you... I think you'd be in your best interest, to do what you do best..."
Don't give me the chance. Fight to the death, are the Master's parting words to Daina.

Harley turns to Quin, "Quin, the children I'm looking for..."
"I will find them. And if possible, transport them out. I have Dim Door prepared. If I and the others cant stop him, he trys to kill them or I am the last one remaining, I will take them to the village and return as fast as possible. I hope I don't need to do so, and you can rescue them yourself.
No takers on the protection spells?"
He rests a hand on Quin's shoulder, stooping a little to look him in the eye, "The boy, his name is Fel. He's got eyes..."
He blinks a little.
"Blue eyes just like mine. He's got his mother's nose. And the girl, Andrea. She looks just like me. They answer to Fel and Andrea... Bring them out for me."
He straightens, "I'll take whatever you can spare."
"I will. Don't worry."
Quin responds, eyes widening.
Quin casts Living Undead on Harley then resist fcold mass before touching Thoradin and protecting him from the effects of negative energy. He then nods to the Master and ducks down the passage.

Pharrah takes her spell component pouch, and casts a spell, consuming it in flames.
"Master, I'll stay here."
Seeing Maki's charge, is buying time, Eduardo grabs Pharrah's wrist and tugs her forward.
No, you are with me. That is the Acererack's agreement. And... I want you with me.
He hesitates a moment.
When we face him.
The Master leans down and touches Hassadur on the neck.
Stay here. Protect my friends. Bring them back to me alive.
Pharrah's eyes widen.
"I CAN'T! I have to stay here!"
She holds a fist in Eduardo's face, so he can see the ring of X-ray Vision.
"This is not a ring of x-ray vision Master, it's another kind of ring... The kind that binds you in life, and apparently, in death... Good luck."
Hassadur's hood flares, and there's an almost imperceptible nod.
The columns are rising, casting new light upon Acererak's Tomb Guard...
Hassadur heads toward the nearest...

Harley glares at the Mysterious Warrior, and Maki, frozen in their contest of pure strength, drawing his red dagger and the great axe, "Good luck Quin, may Moradin be with you. Uh, WAIT!"
He stuffs the dagger in his belt, and offers Quin the scepter, "There's no mechanism on this side to raise the Throne and close the passage. There should be a switch further down the passage, if you take the scepter and flip the switch, he'll be unable to follow you all."
Dranga takes ahold of Leonard, "What do I do with him?"
"Take him. He can help identify the kids, in case Acererak hides a final surprise among them!"

Prescott withdraws a scroll from the case at his hip and unrolls it. Standing next to Daina, he says, "I sincerely hope to not see you standing behind me again. At least, I hope that this time it will be on my terms..."
He casts Greater Invisibility on her. "Take that bow and make it count. The one with the dark armor is on the other team. Keep it straight this time! Come on, Winky!"
The wizard skips up the plinth and steps down on the throneback to scuttle into the corridor after Quin.

With a push of force, he thrusts his blade across The Beginning's face, elicting a cry of surprise.
"GOOD! GOOD! Make me feeeeeeeel it!"
Tilting his head, The Beginning watches Quin and Prescott dive through the hole. He does nothing to stop them.
"They will kill you, you know."
"I'm counting on it archon."
Winky whizzes downward after Prescott, and is swiftly followed by the silver scepter, which strikes Prescott at the back of the head.
Watching the Barbarian charge into battle Thoradin offers a guttural warcry of his own as he charges The Begginining, swinghis in a rather wild manner.

"Let me go, Master!"
Pharrah pulls her wrist from Eduardo's grasp, "I have to help. I know you'll be fine without me Master."
He's never seen her so serious.
Just before Pharrah and he split apart, Eduardo kisses his apprentice.
He gives her one last look before following Quin into the passageway
"Ow. Brilliant." Prescott scoops it up, and hustles forward to see what ridiculous misadventure Acererak had laid out for the final sprint of his tomb.
The narrow passage behind the throne leads to a landing
and steps that funnel south.
Along the west wall, there is a black lever, just as Harley has said there would be.
The steps, wall, and ceiling of this stairwell are each apparently forged of a separate precious or semiprecious metal. A bronze key lies untended on one of the steps.
The six steps are made of onyx, pink marble, lapis, black marble, serpentine-a golden color, and malachite, from lowest to highest. The walls are lined with
copper, untarnished and gleaming, panels set between rare woods inlaid with ivory. The ceiling is silvered iron, formed so as to reflect and multiply light. Upon the fourth step is a large, cylindrical key of bronze. The doors on the south wall are made of mithral, and are fourteen feet wide and twenty eight feet tall.
Where the halves meet, at about waist height, are three cuplike depressions, hemispherical concavities, with central holes.
"Hmmm. Good thing we've got plenty of keys! But NOT a lot of time!"

End game has begun...
Wiping burn marks off his mask, The Beginning nods to Maki.
"Well struck. Well struck indeed. First blood to you."
Eight Tomb Guards, cold as Acererak's heart, ready to defend his Tomb and destroy its invaders stand ready and prepared to bring them death.
Daina, rendered invisible by Prescott can't help but smile.
"The wizard's got a sense of humor. I like him..."
Unseen to almost everyone, she draws and aims.
Pharrah looks over her shoulder, at Harley, who's already circling to flank, while Thoradin, battleaxe in hand mounts the stairs.
Hassadur raises himself to full height, hissing at the Guards.

Within the Wondrous Foyer, the light from Winky and Quin's armor is reflected by the glittering metals.
The mithral doors. The bronze key.
What appears to be three locks...
Leonard shudders, "We have to go fast, or they're going to die, aren't they."
Dranga shakes her head, "No... Maki has the power; Daina and Pete have the range; Harley's got the stealth and a Dwarven Defender like Thoradin can absorb any attack and give it right back. And as for Hassadur, and Pharrah... Those two know how to cheat..."
"And what about us?"
"Clearly, Acererak values brains, and looks, over brawn..."
She winces.
"...I've still got a bad-"
"FIRST WAVE"
"-feeling about this."
"We have to hurry!"
"This will be the greatest fight of your life."
"I just need to get behind him..."
"...I just need him to stand still for one moment..."
"Hisssssss"
"I believe in them."

Pete whispers something to Winky in an obscure dialect of sylvan. Then he cautiously withdraws, arrow still notched, until he stands on the southeastern steel circle. There he addresses those who remain in the throne room.
"When he kills us we may awaken submerged. If so, inhale immediately and drown yourself. You will awaken again seconds later here, and our combat can continue. We fight to the death. And we fight beyond death. Agreed?" Pete then takes careful aim at the suit.
Harley laughs, "Is there any other way?"
He swings the greataxe toward The Beginning's head, and cries in frustration as the mysterious warrior bats the attack away with a kick.
Tongue between his teeth, he reverses the weapon bringing the haft to bear but the sword flashes between them.
"Cobra Strike Style: Total Defense!"
The rune blade becomes a spinning arc of light and metal.
With a scream, Pharrah swings her black blade behind her back, leaping in a backflip to bring her own threat to The Beginning.
Raising the blade above his head, the mysterious warrior crouches taking the brunt of her overhead attack and shifts to the left to let her retaliation swing through air.
He grunts in surprise as Pharrah keeps coming, slashing at his ribs.
Black lightning rips between them, and she grits her teeth, realizing her error.
As Pete waits for The Beginning to make a mistake he steps onto one of the steel caps, and finds that it's slowly but surely rising once again.
The Tomb Guard, has stepped aside to let the columns continue moving without them, staring straight at where the throne would be with empty eye sockets.

"I don't trust anything that the Lich leaves out so openly. Lets try the two halves we found and the scepter first" Quin says, rummaging through his bag to ensure he has his scrolls and potions in order. Sticking a few healing potions in the slots in his belt and taking his last ion stone he sets it spinning.
Coming up alongside Quin, the Master nods.
I agree. Why go through the trouble of dividing and hiding the key, unless it's more important? Prescott, do you still have it?
He cannot help but turn an ear back to the throne room, straining to listen to the pitched battle he left behind
As Quin rummages through the bag, he finds what looks like one of the key halves...
Dranga nods, "But there are three 'keyholes'-one of gold, one of silver and the other of bronze..."
Prescott draws out the key piece he had from earlier, and tosses it to Eduardo upon his inquiry. He also draws out a wand. "I have it, here. I imagine the gold pieced-key, the silver scepter, and the bronze key work in conjunction here. But I am a spellcaster, dammit, and I have no patience for Acererak's scavenger hunts... Knock!"
The doors don't even budge.
The wand isn't very effective.
There must be a way to open it, or else Acererack wouldn't have split us like this... Let us try the keys we have already. At least we can confirm that they fit in the blasted locks. Perhaps the scepter transforms somehow...
Eduardo fits the gold key into the gold key hole, and carefully turns it.
Prescott shoves the wand back into its holster irritably. "We only have one proper key, yes? And I only have half - blast, Harley had the other half from Welby. I think we'll have to use this found key as well if we're looking for three items to stick in these holes."
As Eduardo inserts the golden key half into the hole, it is apparent that it will not fit.
He'll need the other half...
Through the still open passage way, he hears Pharrah's scream, and realizes she's taken her fight to The Beginner.

"Someone !"
Maki says to the otehr members of the team.
"CLOSE THE DOOR FOR NOW! Acererak's Plan might be for the Skeletons to get them from behind as they are trapped in there! "
After saying that Maki throws the Bastard Sword to the floor and takes out Eduardo's Scythe.
Then he sweeps at the Beginning's legs.
"Impressive!"
Maki sweeps his legs out from under the mysterious warrior and he lands the hard platform of the throne...
Pete hears Daina's voice in his hear, and feels a bundle being pressed into his quiver.
"Use these to heal from a distance..."
And then she's gone.
Thoradin brings his battleaxe down on the sword, but the Mysterious Warrior pushes him back, foiling his sunder attack with his own tremendous strength.
Whipping his coils in a long arc, Hassadur slams into one of the Tomb Guards with tremendous force...
Seeing The Beginning down already, Harley is sure he's got the advantage.
"Didn't last long, did he?"
The axe slams down, raising up sparks as the Mysterious Warrior rolls away.
"Long enough to do this... Sweeping River!"
Like a great halo, the blade whirls around at their feet...
...and Thoradin finds himself lying on his back.
Maki realizes his hands are empty and that Eduardo's scythe is lying on the ground.
With a cry, the axe flies from Harley's hands as well, and Pharrah rages as she drops to the ground too.
Continuing her attacks, the mysterious warrior blocks them all.
Without as much as a second look at his dropped weapon Maki unsheates his trusty Falchion and slashes fiercely at the fallen warrior!
" RAAAAGH! "
Seeing as he begins to rise again Maki swings at him a second time with his word!

Prescott moves forward with the scepter, trying the keyhole divots to see if any will be a fit for the ball on either end.
The silver end fits within the silver keyhole perfectly.
There is a click, and Prescott feels a rather good feeling tingle through his body.
Then he realizes he cannot let go.
Hold that thought, Prescott.
Eduardo runs up the steps and calls into the pitched battle, Harley! Throw us the key bit! We need both halves to move forward and challenge the Lich!
Dranga looks at Prescott's position curiously.
"Prescott, what are you doing?"
Harley's busy.
So Eduardo is a little surprised when he hears Daina say, "I just gave it to you! It's hanging around your neck!"
At Dranga & Winky's inquiry, Prescott responds, "I appear to be stuck. This scepter seems to have a continuing gimmick of holding things fast and releasing on certain conditions... Let me do all the key turning, so more of us don't join in this compulsion."
Prescott uses his mummy hand to Mage Hand the bronze key up toward him while Eduardo is seeing to the golden key.
As Prescott maneuvers the key into the appropriate lock, he feels an odd presure inside his right boot.
When the heck did that happen?
Eduardo mutters to himself as he dashes back to the door, joining the two key segments together mid-stride.
Prescott looks to his boot to see what might have materialized there, and next focuses his mage-hand attention on dislodging the mystery item. Once that's removed, he'll take the kludged together gold key off Eduardo's hands and fit that in the top lock.
Quin looks on slightly amused but heads but quickly realizes he needs to move fast.
Rushing back to the combat he calls "Pharrah, Do you have any scrolls I can use? Im going to shut the throne if not. Best of luck."

Maintainin his aim on the mysterious warrior, Pete sees Maki bring him down.
But he doesn't fire yet, being on the ground, he's a smaller target...
Throwing axes in hand, Harley roars, only to be slashed across the face with the sword, foiling his attacks.
Black and white light's whirl as Pharrah and the Beginning parry, feint and swing their blades back and forth trying to slash each other to bits.
Everywhere she goes the sword is there, and so she tries to smash her forehead into his face, only to cry aloud as the mysterious warrior takes the blow without flinching.
"Cobra Style: Down Comes the Avalanche!!"
Swinging his feet in an arc above his head, The Beginning lifts himself from the ground, and Pete's patience pays off; he looses two arrows.
Lowering his aim just a bit, Pete sends the first arrow where armor is often weak, just beneath where the arm joins the shoulder.
At the same time, Maki rips with the falchion smashing into the mask and drawing a groan of pain from the warrior.
But he finishes his movement.
Pete's second arrow is batted away by the sword, cutting the shaft in half.
Landed solidly on his feet, the mysterious warrior aims a flurry of blows to Maki's extremities, which the barbarian easily fends off.
Leaving him very surprised when a kick sends his falchion flying out of his hands, leaving him unarmed again.
From her unseen position, Daina looses two arrows of her own only to see them be batted away by the sword again.
The columns continue to rise, lifting Pete higher into the air.
" What is it dont you like weapons? "
The Mysterious Warrior says nothing, bouncing alight on his feet.
"Oh Now You are silent! "
Maki Kicks the Scythe back around ten feet.
Then he jumps backwards towards it.
Pete puts on his ring of feather falling and nocks one more arrow.
As Maki attempts to retreat to safety, the mysterious warrior clucks in disapproval...
He leaps up, and swings his foot in a blurringly fast kick to the barbarian's head.
It doesn't hurt much.

As Eduardo brings the keys together, there is a flash of light in his hands, as well as in Prescott's boot and in Quin's bag.
Their eyes adjust after a moment and Eduardo holds a golden key on a black string in his hand.
Once the key is inserted, there is a crackle of electricity, and slowly the door begins to swing open...
As the halves swing to reveal beyond, Prescott reveals that his hand is free, though the scepter appears to have vanished, returning to its place above...
The gold and bronze keys fall to the steps with a pair of clinks.
A silvered ceiling reflects a grand room with inlaid ivory and gold tiled walls and a polished agate tiled floor. A hulking black iron demonic sculpture rests in each corner of the chamber, each bearing a distinctive weapon. In addition, the chamber contains a gold filigreed bronze urn from which issues a thin stream of smoke, two iron chests, and a granite sarcophagus which is plainly inscribed with the name ‘ACERERAK.’
Two armored skeletons, of human origin and bearing marks of tearing claws and intense flame, lie in crawling, pitiful positions, as if fleeing the sarcophagus.
One a swordsman by his arms, reaches toward a black ring, an inch of of reach. The other, with a sack and a scimitar clutched in hand covers his face in despair.
Each iron statue is nine feet tall and is forged of black metal. The statue to the northeast stands with a saw-toothed two-handed sword raised to strike; the statue to the northwest has a huge, spikeended mace; to the southeast the sculpture readies a wickedly spiked morning star, and the one in the southwest has a glaive.
Quin scans the room with his magical sight before entering, lingering on the statues most of all.

If they are disguised constructs or another type of life form, or UN-life form, the Master would know.

Of course Acererack takes away our trapspringers...

In that case Pete needed a reflex save the first round it moved or else he took the full force of it to the face,
I rolled a Balance Check in secret and he made it...
Though next round, the wind shall become more noticeable...

Knocked off the column before or after he managed to get a shot in? If so, round 2 for Pete would not be ready another shot and wield ring, but stand up after the fall, if alive.
At the beginning of his turn, I'll roll a Balance Check.
The column moves first.
So, if he falls, I'll have to determine if he hits a column, I dunno yet.

But if it did not move as you said, then I hope you let Maki make a full round attack of opportunity to keep The Beginning from standing as well.
Pete readied an Action...
Each round is six seconds. More than enough time to fire two arrows.
And it was fluff.

But if it did not move as you said, then I hope you let Maki make a full round attack of opportunity to keep The Beginning from standing as well.
Melee attacks don't stop you from standing up. Neither do ranged attacks.

I thought it was a construct's body, not armor. Not that armor doesn't have HP and hardness values. But surely constructs can be targeted. Or do you mean just not with arrows? If it's not a construct (can't target) or undead (no bane), and not a living human or elf (no favored enemy) I imagine it must either be Acererak's new undead, the experimental version that was supposedly never finished, or an illusion. What do you imagine?

If it were me? I'd imagine it were some kind of undead, shielded by the suit. That's what the function was divined to be. To decide its a construct after its spoken unusually clearly seems like a large jump of... logic?
I don't mean he/it can't be targetted, but I've gotten the idea that Pete means to attack the suit, and not what's moving it...
There's no discernible point...
...of course, if I'm wrong about Pete's view, that's all moot.
All that matters is that it'd be in Maki's best interest that everyone started working a little harder...:smallamused:

So we are waiting for Thoradin uh?

[roll0] Spot Check for Eduardo

I posted in the old thread to save space but Quin will wait for Pharrah's response before checking out the room.
Got it.

Eduardo receives no readings within this chamber. His deathwatch vision appears to have no power here.
The only dead he can confirm are the two dead men lying on the floor.
Not even Quin's Detect Magic picks up anything.

Joining the default MO of the party, he starts scanning the room by means of his Detect magic wand as well.

Just to be thorough. When you say 'his deathwatch has no power here' and 'Detect magic doesn't pick up anything', are they showing 'Nothing to report' or are they not-working at all, like an anti-magic field? An AMF would probably affect our gear, etc., and give other indications...

[roll0] Damage to Thoradin

As Thoradin lifts himself to his feet, The Beginning's foot snaps outward striking the dwarf in the face.
"I cannot be taunted."
Flicking the runesword, out of the way, the mysterious warrior offer Thoradin only air for his battleaxe.
As Hassadur coils between two of the Tomb Guards, the massive snake tries to hiss a warning.
Maki doesn't hear the warning in time.
Though he definitely feels the icy shields that strike him in the back and the frost covered sickle that tries sweep his legs out from under him.
Leapiing over the weapon, Maki remains on his feet.

[roll1] Damage to Maki

[roll3]Maki's Opposed Strength Check

Swinging his feet across the ground, Harley makes his own trip attack, only for the mysterious warrior to leap over his spinning feet, and receive a kick to the face in response. He staggers backwards angry, and swinging the axe in an overhead arc shouts in surprise as the ever-fast blade halts the attack.
Pharrah pulling herself to her feet, drops a scroll at Quin's feet.
"Hurry! Good luck to y-"
Spinning from Harley, The Beginning kicks her in the back of the head, bouncing her off the wall.
Thoradin is struck in the back by the shields as well, and another Tomb Guard with a sickle in hand reaches to trip him up, and with typical dwarf hardiness, Thoradin ignores the attempt to set him on his back again.

Readying a ice-sheathed long sword, the Tomb Guard grins looking down at the cleric with rime covered eye sockets.
Flipping across the sand, the mysterious warrior withdraws, letting the heroes have their fun with the Tomb Guard.

[roll9] Balance Check

Finally, remembering the wind, Pete manages to balance despite the rushing air.
But as he approaches the ceiling on the rising columns the problem of where to go becomes apparent...
Falling from the steel platform, Pete's feather fall ring brings him to a safe landing on the northern side of the column.
Three Tomb Guards are flanking Maki and Thoradin, and two struggle with Hassadur, while the mysterious warrior appears to have vanished.

Everybody gimme Actions.

Looking back toward Quin still, he sees the skeleton bear down on him. Agile bones! "Quin!" he throws his hand out in a chop, and tosses a Life Bolt at the dwarf's attacker. As five spiraling beams of positive energy lance out toward the skeleton, Prescott moves back down the stairs toward the black lever.

Eduardo cautiously steps forward to examine the urn, though he does not touch it. Perhaps his knowledge of rituals might let him identify the burning substance within.

As he walks, he also examines the floor of the room and its walls, especially around the skeletal bodies. Their mode of death was clear, but what signs of struggle were left in their wake? Were they truly killed fleeing the sarcophagus, as appearances indicated? Or were the placed just so, like everything else in the tomb. If they were truly killed that way, there would be evidence. Blood stains marking the floor, scorch marks on the hinds of their armor, perhaps some ancient dirt from their boots leaving its mark?

Dranga hears the crunching sound of Quin being struck by the Tomb Guard, and looks to see what has happened.
"Leonard! Stay with Eduardo..."
Exiting the Treasure Room, a scorching ray is her response to one of Acererak's finest warriors.
The Tomb Guard tries to hide behind its oversized shield of ice, but the scorching ray burns through leaving it exposed to Prescott's Bolts of Light, staggering backwards against the wall, Guard cowers behind the shield, to focused on avoiding the ray and bolts to attack.
This gold filigreed container is the size of a child, and a thin stream of smoke issues from a tiny vent in its brass stopper that is sealed with gold fill.
It smells like cinnamon.
The ceiling is silvered, and reflects the ivory and gold tiles on the walls, while the floor is polished agate tile.
The huge outer shell of the sarcophagus is scribed with the name ACERERAK, and Eduardo sees a precious inlay was pried out at some point in the past.
Each of these massive iron boxes is set into the stone and is triple locked. Both show marks of prying, battering, and so on.
This room, unlike the rest of the Tomb hasn't been swept...
At least four people have tracked mud, dust, blood and black sand through hear, with concentrations of footprints around the sarcophagus, statues, chests and the urn.

Eduardo concludes that this is Acererak's treasure room, his final resting place and where he keeps his treasures and most precious, powerful items, and perhaps where the seat of his evil resides.
The urn may be more ego, an eternal flame burning where he has left his body to rest, and kept alive under the watchful gaze of the terrifying statues.

It appears that the skeletons were killed after fleeing from the sarcophagus.
But in order to piece together what occurred, he'll need to examine the tracks and see what he can determine.
Does the Master of Death have the time?
There appears to be nothing further... Could this be it?

Human Paragon 3
2011-11-02, 10:27 AM
What the Master sees puzzles him.

It would appear that a few brave men had been here in the past, and paid for their trespass with their lives... They all had examined the chests and sarcophagus, and at least two had died for it. And the chests remained locked. The Sarcophagus remained closed.

They had all failed, it seems.

He is alone in the room, but for an archon and a child. No condition to face down Acererack. The Master decides to take a few more seconds to examine the tracks, trying to piece together what truly occurred here.

Basically, I will continue in the same way until Quin is disentangled from his fight with the tomb guard and the rest of the spellcasters rejoin me.

How come Quin took cold damage? He specifically casted Protection from cold... Or are they still inside the AMF? XD
Resist Energy, Mass not protection from energy
And he can only protect six...
Maki
Pete
Thoradin
Harley
Daina
Pharrah
None for him.

Quin needs to beat some senselessness into him so we can close the door.
Actually...
Aw, nevermind, it'll amuse me.

Total Defense so +6 to AC (Or +4? I dunno how you counted that last time) AND this is gonna hurt...
It's +4 from Total Defense.
And which weapon?
And yes, yes it will.

Speaking of, I don't recall who last had the Dome helmet that Leonard was playing with. Does he still have it?
You could ask...
:smalltongue:

So my 5 ranks in tumble are useless? -o-
Check separately for each opponent you move past, in the order in which you pass them (player’s choice of order in case of a tie). Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble DC.
If you have 5 or more ranks in Tumble, you gain a +6 dodge bonus to AC when executing the total defense standard action instead of the usual +4 dodge bonus to AC.
So no, not useless...
That would make his AC...
^-_-
You haven't even given Raging Maki Skills!
28 AC

Yes but Raging doesnt let me use any Skill checks based on dexterity (EX Tumble)
Oh right. Cool.
So, then what's the point of asking about the Tumble Skill?
Maki used his Move Action to pick up the scythe and a standard action to fight defensively.
Which first by the way?
So, AC 26.

Speaking of my boot, what was the deal with the item in my boot? Was that another key piece? Was it disappeared when Eduardo merged the key bits together?
It was a key piece. Multiplying. =P

And then the wrong ones explode...
Next time.

Too short to grab the lever that Harley said would close the passage.
You point your finger at an object and can lift it and move it at will from a distance
Not gonna happen. And climbing out of the passage shall be an interesting deal.

I believe the lever back in this hallway closes the throne. It wasn't shut yet, since the skeleton jumped down the passage to say hi. And Quin can heal at range IIRC. Prescott hasn't taken any actual-damage, just some non-lethal from the spell he just cast. Feel free to throw it all to Maki.

The point, has been bolded.

The Guard, realizing that Quin has hidden himself snarls angrily, spitting ice across the ground.
And so it begins to follow down the corridor, swinging it's shield and sword back and forth in large arcs.
The healing magic is wasted, without sight of Maki, Quin cannot target the barbarian for healing, from the bottom of the secret passage.

[roll0] Fortitude Save

The scepter is nowhere in sight, magically tied to the room, it must have returned to its proper place...
The Tomb Guard comes nearer and nearer, swinging its weapons and shields back and forth...
Then Dranga, sends another scorching ray at it's skull, burning the gruesome visage clean off, and the bones, ice and armor collapse to the ground.

Prescott has Actions, still waiting for Pete's Actions...

Not only does Quin not have line of sight, he has no IC knowledge that Maki even needs healing. Why not Thoradin? Harley? Or Pharrah? Or Pete?

Quin autosucceeds on the Jump Check...

Two threads...

The only reason Pete and Eduardo's separate adventures took place in PMs was maintain character...
In Eduardo's case, it was to make sure that even though he continued to fight, the others would act as they normally would-in this case, get some exploration done.
In Pete's case, it was to make sure PCs wouldn't start casting protecting spells if Daina or Pete coughed too loud.
In THIS case, the characters are actively sealing themselves away, well aware of what is occuring with the other half of the team anyways? So do i really need a second thread? Your characters know one group is fighting with a swordsman and the other is blazing ahead...

negative.

You heal nonlethal damage at the rate of 1 hit point per hour per character level.

When a spell or a magical power cures hit point damage, it also removes an equal amount of nonlethal damage.

Pete doesn't even make two steps when he finds his feet flying out from underneath of him and his head quickly adopting their former relative position.
As he hits the sand hard, Pete realizes he's not going anywhere for the moment.
The Tomb Guards lash out with their icy blades, hacking at Maki as he reaches for his weapon.
Their gaping maws filled with rotten teeth and icicles gape at him, then arrows from the darkness shatter their skulls, and all three of them collapse in a slushy heap at Maki's feet.
With the Beginning having flipped and vanished from sight, Thoradin is surrounded by the frost covered undead with his true foe nowhere to be found.
They reach out to attack him, but arrows burst through their skulls too, splintering bone and leaving the cold Tomb Guard as a pile of ice, bones and armor.
Flexing his coils, Hassadur crushes the remaining guards with his scale covered muscles.

Below, as Quin(or Prescott) pull the lever(or Mage Hand it), the black lever pulls down in a smooth release, and there is a loud clunking noise, as from below, they can see the passage is indeed beginning to close, while above the throne makes it's slow but triumphant return.
Harley kicks at the bones in disgust, "Where'd he go?"
Pharrah points above Pete, "Right there. Invisible."
"How-"
"I see everything!"
"Fair enough."
He hurls his throwing axes at the indicated place, and Pharrah runs across the sand, throwing punches and kicks in what appears to be empty air, until she doubles over gasping as something appears to have kicked her in the stomach...
The sand next to Pete's head shifts, and a decidely foot like presence shatters his nose.
Another one assaults his ribs, and finally delivers a parting kick to the side of his head again.
As Pete slips away from conciousness, the mysterious warrior is revealed, his armor removing it's invisibility effect.

"Where's all my stuff?"
He is naked. None of his various magical items and weapons remain, taken by Acererak...
"ACERERAK! You DIRTY CHEAT!"
He screams in the hall, letting his voice echo along with the rain.
"Uh, my head..."
As visions of a dead man bounces through his head, Welby has the interesting view of seeing himself through another's eyes.
I know this place...
The arch of mist, with it's flashing lights is to his right, and as he turns to squint, feeling sick just by the sight of the Bloodmotes, he can see the face of the green devil.
"...I'm back at the entrance."
There is a squeaking and a pitiful whine.
"Mr. Smartass! You found me!"
The rat crawls from a corner squeaking loudly.
"Don't worry! I'm not out of this yet-"
More squeaking.
"-I'm gonna beat that damned demi-lich, naked or not!"
The familiar scurries back into his corner...
"What's wrong?"
There is a crunching sound, and another piteous whine.
Not from Mr. Smartass...
Welby turns, looking out into the rain.
A dark, massive winged shape, sits further near the entrance, silhouetted by the rain and flashes of lightning.
It clutches a squirming and jerking figure in it's claws.
"Trevor?"
Whining, Trevor swipes at the gargoyle's face with torn stumps, but can't stop the creature from chomping through his skull, sucking out the poor dwarf's brains with a slurping sound.
Mashing bits of bone and grey matter with its teeth, the zombie gargoyle watches Welby through a single ruined eye.

Is the mask completely opaque? Or can you see out from the inside?

He examines it closely, spying the etching on the inside over the eyehole. "Quin, would you look at this mask Leonard has? This phrase is present again, and I wonder if you might have some more insight into it, considering the position. The person who sent me, Pete, and Thoradin here wore this mask, or one like it." Prescott holds it up and shows Quin the mark lining up with Quin's wasted eye.

Speaking with the departed spirits of these old bones is impractical for a number of reasons. For one, the ritual requires 10 minutes to prepare. We'll have to go in blind this time.

The iron men "do more than meets the eye..." Do... Can they be manipulated in some way? Perhaps they block off an unseen exit.

Eduardo approaches one of the iron statues and tries to take its weapon.

As Quin lifts the urn, he finds it is dreadfully heavier than he'd imagined and drops it to the floor.
A hazy smoke bursts from the urn, and blacker smoke covers the ground around their feet. A burst of flame heralds the arrival of the succubus, and she glares at the dwarf.

"And please, you're not banishing me, anywhere, not while we're in here."
"Oh, man... I'm totally out of my league..."
There is a slump and a thud next to Eduardo; Leonard has fainted-whether it is fear or simply exposure to the succubus, who can know?
The succubus grins at the sight of Winky, wagging her finger, "You are not. Supposed to be here..."
With her clawed toes, the succubus definitely didn't make the boot marks.
"So, I ask again. Who's it gonna be?"
She raises a hand, snapping her fingers and the doors slam shut with a crash.

Did those search checks earlier indicate anything interesting about any of the statues?

I don't suppose this is the sort of thing that we really need to make a will save for if we're already scooting forward...

Prescott hands the mask back to Leonard, shrugging to Quin. "Thanks. Everyone's got to have a job. You take care of that, okay? " He hopes the task diverts the child's attention some... it wasn't helping *his* any.

At the appearance of the succubus, Prescott is a bit flummoxed. Also, genuinely curious. Not in the 'how do you close doors in an antimagic field way', but... "Who's it going to be for what?"

Well, I had some other thoughts on things to say or things to do in here (pre-succubus), but I guess nothing much matters until we see how she reacts to being mace'd... I can't be too chatty while they're busy playing melee.

"I've been in that container for a loooong time..."

As Quin moves to retrieve the glaive he comes to a disturbing discovery...
He'd already dropped the longspear when the succubus had first appeared.
Curious.
As Eduardo lifts to strike with the mace he is astonished as well, rather than gripped in his hands, it appears that he's set it at his feet.
The succubus raises an eyebrow...
"Hey, what are you doing? Can't you hear me out first?"

Can't move. Dwarven Defender. I believe Thoradin is the MOST USELESS CHARACTER EVER!
[Facepalm]
I assume he's definitely getting a rebuild for Return? =P

With a furious attack, Thoradin pummels the pile of bones that Daina had already dismantled for him.
They offer no resistance to his his might, his power, his axe.
"SECOND WAVE!"
From the pillars more of Acererak's spawn emerge...
Another Mummy Lord, this one bearing twin crowns and headdress is in much better condition than the one's they'd faced eariler.
He carries a massive khopesh in one hand, and an weird looking holy symbol in the other-a cross with a loop.
The Mummy King's wrapping are pristine whites and gems and armor adorn the tightly woven strips of cloth.
And of course, he's not alone. Two concubines flank him, in similarily good condition, with jewellery and wigs to complete their elitist look.
Golden bows and quivers hang from their back.
Five guards, skeletons with spears and large shields and impressive helmets and armor raise their weapons in a salute.
"هيل لرد دسرت مون! هيل أسرارك!"
"هيل لرد دسرت مون! هيل أسرارك!"
"هيل لرد دسرت مون! هيل أسرارك!"
"هيل لرد دسرت مون! هيل أسرارك!"
"هيل لرد دسرت مون! هيل أسرارك!"
As the concubines runs their hands across the eagle emblazoned on his bejewelled breast plate, the Mummy King nods appreciatively to his guard.
"هيل أسرارك إنديد! كل ثم أل!"
They bang their shields and spears again in response.
Harley groans, "Thoradin! Leave those alone! We've got work to do!"

Arrows bounce across the mysterious warrior's chest, and he grunts in frustration.

Striking him with her sword Pharrah screams, "Stay down, you!"
More arrows pelt his head, bouncing off the armor.
"Damn," Daina curses from nowhere. "More protections..."

Maki has an Attack of Opportunity. And I'd like some Actions from Thoradin too...
Pete, being unconcious gets no Actions, and avoids getting the coup de grace this turn.
Also, just directing your attention...
Arrows.
And a shiny new bow... Two shiny new bows...

In the Treasure Room, the succubus' lip trembles, "You were going to attack me, weren't you? What did I ever do to you?"
Fainted on the ground, Leonard is in no condition to accept the mask.
It falls from Prescott's fingers.

"...but a contract, is a contract. I like your smile."
A third succubus wraps her arms around Prescott's neck, nuzzling him happily.
In the corner, a fourth Valera leans nonchalantly against the wall, chatting to Winky.
"So, what's an archon like you, doing in a place like this?"
Eduardo's got his own trio; one reaching from behind pulls back the hood of his cloak, playing with his hair, while another from the front presses kicks along his cheek. The third hangs from the side, smiling widely.
"I could take you with me... I'd probably only keep you three weeks..."
They look him up and down, "...maybe four."
"You don't get attached do you?"
Dranga almost disappears, giggling madly in three pairs of groping hands and nipping teeth.
"I haven't been with a girl for a looooong time, but I'm never out of practice."
"...six weeks for you..."
'Come with me! You won't regret it."
A lone succubus pokes Leonard, "Awww, he's sooooo cute, I wish he'd wake up!"
Quin doesn't escape the threefold attentions of the succubus either, "I like a man with a beard."
"...you can punish me..."
"Endurance..."
"Come with me..."
"...come with me..."
"...please, come with me..."
"...I've been alooooooone for soooo long..."
"...come with me..."
"...come with me."

The Sand Guard doesn't even see Maki coming...
With devastating force, Maki literally smashes the creature to pieces, sending bone and armor flying.
Pharrah pulls out a potion and holds it to Pete's lips, "C'mon, come back to us!"
As his eyes fly open, Pharrah is the first thing he sees.
She smiles.
Fitting an arrow to its bow, one of the concubine, her armor set with obsidian gemstones takes aim at Maki...
The arrow flies through the air, a white stream of light trailing after it, and Maki calmly steps aside letting it whistle past his ear.
"QUIN! QUIN!"
Harley continues to call to the cleric...

Valera pulls her tongue from Quin's ear, "Your friend is calling you..."
"You should go to him..."
"...but come back quickly."
Laughingly, they release the dwarf...
...and the tunnel comes closer and closer to being sealed as the throne rises.

The other concubine sets an arrow to her bow as well, this one targetting Thoradin...
Her armor is set with ivory, glinting in the light of the columns.
She releases the arrow, but Thoradin bats it away with the axe easily... The arrow had glowed with a white stream of light as it had been loosed from the bow.
The Sand Guard blocks Thoradin's first attack, but he shatters it's skull with a surprising maneuver, destroying the creature.
Running across the sand, the remaining sandguards create a spear wall before their king, the Pharoah.

Pete regains...
39 Hitpoints and Loses 39 Hitpoints of Nonlethal Damage, giving him 72 HPs, and 57 Hitpoints of Nonlethal Damage.

Maki's taken 22HPs of damage in total... Counting his DR

Okay! All three of ya' gimme Actions

As their respective Guards fall, Maki and Thoradin take in their Mummy threats...
For both of them, the concubines are nothing...
Dressed and wrapped courtesans who followed their lord into the 'afterlife'
But the Pharaoh leaves them paralyzed with fear...

Why do THEY get all they Egypt stuff?

Quin nods happily, only concerned slightly the succubus looks nothing like Raina, who is still hundreds of miles away, if alive at all. He snaps out of his daze as she mentions a friend. Looks desperately for his stuff, he grabs everything and rushes to the doors, taping the scepter against them as Eduardo had done. He they rushes down the steps and out to the throne.

Oasys said the scepter was nowhere to be found. And I believe we left the other two keys out on the steps. I wonder if Valera would be kind enough to reopen the doors?

Yes, that's kind of what I was thinking - give her the one who is least interesting so she'll be disappointed quickly and leave the rest of us alone. That would, unfortunately, be Leonard I'm sure, which is clearly not the solution here. I completely fail to see the obvious moral & mechanical solution here, considering we're unable to act against the succubus with her impossible charm/takeoffyourpants effect. The only option would appear to be for one of us to go with her and get her out of our way for the others. Which is not a good option. :smallannoyed: I mean, we can't take any actions against her. Are we even capable of NOT wanting to go with her?

Why do THEY get all they Egypt stuff?
They're waves...
:smalltongue:

As Quin moves to see what Harley wishes, Quin wonders how Valera had heard him through the three foot thick doors...
Perhaps something for another time...
The doors swing open for him, and Valera's Seven, Eight and Nine stick out their lips, pouting.
"I miss him already..."
"...so handsome..."
"...so divine."
Dranga giggles loudly, "That does feel good."
Her eyes are rolling into the back of her head as Valera's Four and Five place kisses on her neck and chin.
Valera Six has already braided the dwarf's hair into a ponytail like Daina's.
"So pretty..."
"...so soft..."
"...I'll be sad when you go."
Prescott suddenly realizes that he's gone from vertical to horizontal...
His head now rests on Valera One's chest while Valera Two bites on his lip.
"Taste soooo good..."
Valera Three has entwined herself around him, tightly holding him in a loving embrace.
"...show me the magic..."
Her tail flicks back and forth like a cat's.
"...love me..."
Valera Ten smiles widely at Winky, who continues to circle the succubus in an ever shrinking orbit.
"I don't know, being a familiar is a full-time job...""He could come too..."She winks.
"Nah, I'm not a sharing kind of archon..."
"...I respect that."
"Sweet."
Valera Eleven is licking Eduardo's fingers.
"You just need to relax..."
Twelve and Thirteen have removed his upper layers and press kisses on his chest and neck.
"...mhmmmm, the power, the willl-it could be fun."
"...maybe two months..."
They run their hands through the Master's hair.

Outside the Treasure Room, Quin's thoughts are still full of Valera.
The smell of roses and cinnamon are on every breath, and every movement feels one-dimensional without her touch...
"Quin! Is that you!"
The throne is closing quickly, and Harley holds a scroll in his hand, "Here!"

I mean, we can't take any actions against her. Are we even capable of NOT wanting to go with her?

Well, not exactly true...
Her Charisma-based aura has just 'de-threatened' you guys, there's nothing stopping Prescott from picking up his items again... But does he want too?
Perhaps he should try using his Skill-based Actions?

I completely fail to see the obvious moral & mechanical solution here
Well, you 'can't' send a PC... That would effectively end ToHs for them...
...you can't send the boy, that'd be morally repugnant...

Here's my thinking.

1) A 10th level wizard--or whatever she is--is going to be more useful than a lantern archon.

2) We don't know what will actually happen to whoever we give away.

3) Winky's not even supposed to BE here in the first place!

...mmmmnope, still not getting it. The only other person in the room is Dranga. I fail to see how she fits the bill. Also, it's not something that we can decide for her. Just like HP3 shouldn't be giving away my familiar. :smalltongue: Though I totally agree with his logic. If someone has to go, we should send Winky.

I can pick up my items, but you're saying I don't want to. That's the same thing as 'can't pick up items, can't attack her, can't even remain standing'. That is not how succubi work! Not even ignoring an antimagic field. That is not how Diplomacy works, either. Diplomacy means I would help her out, not lie down and take off my SCP and scroll box.

What do you mean, ask her 'or what'? This is a succubus who can apparently still do magic and can cow us with a superduper Cha check, working for the owner of this horrible tomb, LIVING IN HIS TREASURE VAULT. We are not in any position to harm her or contradict her if she chooses to impose herself on us. DR alone would stop that thought, even if we COULD bring ourselves to hit her.

As for skill-checks, I do not have any relevant skills trained, unless I can Concentration her into oblivion. So it's really coming down to, what, an untrained +1 Diplomacy check for her to maybe help us stop her employer Acererak, pretty please? I *did* ask what entertains her in hopes of striking some kind of deal (or at least volunteering her someone undesirable, so she'd hate the deal and leave us alone), but she did not directly respond to my question. Instead, she multiplied and laid me down on the floor.

Indeed, this is a very troubling encounter. I feel I should at least try... this.

Eduardo shakes his head. What his senses were telling him seemed impossible. Could it all be another of Acererack's tricks? Was the supposed anti-magic field an illusion? Or the succubus some monstrously powerful illusion that could overcome it?

I'll be rolling a save to see through this if it's an illusion:

[roll0]
[roll1] and a general will check.

Whether it was real or not, made little difference, however, if the result was the same. Eduardo musters his will power to push away the demons and stand up once again, picking up the iron morningstar as he does so.

You have delayed us for long enough! he snaps. Your contract is nothing to do with us. I've agreed to nothing and do not intend to. I don't trust you, and I don't like you.

What, forsooth, will you do if we decide that none of us will go to bed with you?

Ditto

Prescott sits up. "I find that I *do* rather like you, Valera, but I must agree with Eduardo. Your contract does not concern us explicitly. Come to think of it, does your pact stipulate *when* you must take someone into your chambers? I'd be most happy to revisit this topic at a time when the world is not about to end."

Hmmmm... All good points.

I can pick up my items, but you're saying I don't want to.
I never said that...
:smalltongue:
...I merely narrated that Prescott had put them down.

I *did* ask what entertains her in hopes of striking some kind of deal (or at least volunteering her someone undesirable, so she'd hate the deal and leave us alone), but she did not directly respond to my question. Instead, she multiplied and laid me down on the floor.
Persistence! She did not wish to answer!

Focus on the positive, less on the negative...
...all she's 'done' is be friendly, and let her natural protections take effect.
The essence of these protections is to disarm...
...and obviously they were warranted, since you terrible people attacked the poor thing first.

And OoC, the original efreeti who was keyed to this room was specified to be able to use magic within its confines...
But the only magic Valera has used is to open and close the door.

That is not how Diplomacy works, either. Diplomacy means I would help her out, not lie down and take off my SCP and scroll box.
She's not using Diplomacy just yet anyways.

tl;dr

Valera's only 'obvious' magic is being a door opener... The rest is magic... And maybe the black smoke billowing along the ground...
...no 'Diplomacy Checks' to make a deal or change her mind have been made.
Intimidate, Diplomacy, Bluff, Sense Motive, Concentration and even Appraise will help you.
If harming is your intent, make a Will Save. But beware what you release from the bottle-Valera's... abilities are considerably greater than that of a typical succubus, and she has a home advantage with the ability to fight and cast spells within the AMF... It's possible, but I wouldn't do it.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and the multiply effect... ;D That was definitely magic.

As the succubi continue to nuzzle against Eduardo, he cannot deny that as improbable as this situation may be...
It's very very real.
Valeras Four, Seven, and Ten cover their faces at Eduardo's words, "You'd leave me all by myself! Whhhhhy? I like you..."
Valera Two shakes her head, "Can't you take a stop? Just one?"
Valera Thirteen gazes into Eduardo's eyes, "If you leave me alone, I'll cry!"
They release him, giving the Master space to stand on his own.
"My contract is very specific; upon the agreed upon exit of the specified receptacle, the contractor (in this case, me) agrees that atleast one individual present at said exit must be taken from the confines of the engine to due with as she so wills. She may use whatever means necessary to enforce these terms and so fulfill the agreed upon conditions."
She bends over, showing a silver branded stylized tattoo of a crowned skull on her right buttock.
"See! In silvered ink, right there!"

Oh, I'm very interested in perusing Valera's legal assets. Please give me as much jargony detail as I can make out through careful study.

Saying 'Dranga, cool, go with her!' is not a satisfactory answer. We as PCs aren't *doing* anything.

I'm still not really happy about the no-save depantsing we're all enjoying. Mind fog doesn't explain it, either, since we didn't save against that. If you're DM-fiating that we have to talk our way out of this encounter, that's perfectly fine... but we didn't really get instruction that 'You feel very attentive to Valera and every thought of aggression is banished from you mind.' Rather, we were told 'Prescott drops his sword and bag and robe and lies down' without understanding *why* our characters are doing these things. When I jump in with a post, my first reaction would be 'Prescott gathers himself and then casts magic missile, not sure what just came over him', because you haven't shared the strange thoughts that govern our apparent actions. That's why I'm having trouble sorting out a proper reaction.

Also, she could have been an efreet? They grant wishes! That's much nicer than being level drained for a few weeks.

If Acererak *loses*, you are likewise free. Not bound to this urn and this room any more, neh?

The contract only specifies that you need to take the person from this place, and does not say you are bound to any further action once they leave your domain. Is that correct?"

Valera Two nods, "Uhhuuuuuuuuh. But I think other actions are implied..."
Valera three bats her eyelashes, running a finger around Prescott's jaw, "Three weeks... With me... Don't tell me you're not at all interested..."
Dranga mumbles, "What exactly will take place in this three weeks?"
"Very very strenuous physical activity."
"Slavery?"
"The complete opposite."
"Is there any room for academia?"
"Mhmmmm, I don't think so..."
"How about one of us joins you after we're done here..."
Valeras One through Thirteen tilt their heads, thinking.
"How do I know you won't just run out on me? Nope, right here I've got leverage... Convince me..."
"Surely you can understand our skeptism..."
"True..."
"...such as the issue of the life-draining..."
"Who said anything about life-draining?"
"It was implied..."
"It most certainly was not."

Eduardo believes he follows Prescott's line of thinking. Perhaps some more official bargain would need to be struck, however.

You are bound in a pact with Acererack... why not bind us in a pact with you as well? One of us will agree to go with you to your abode on the astral... exactly one week from today. In return, you will do nothing to interfere with our exploration of the tomb until that time passes.

You get to fulfill your bargain with Acererack to the letter, and we get to continue on our gods-given mission. We'll even sign in blood if that makes you feel better.

Agreed?

Also, on the subject of Mo's rebuilding..
@Dwarven Defender
What can I say, you picked the worst PrC. Ever. End of discussion.(Given the options you had for melee. The fluff was nice, but the class is horrible.). I do not blame you, nor am I insulting you. I am stating the truth.

As it is in Quin's best intrest to remain alive and since you are an active PC I would like to share some advice.

First off, since Oasy limited us to core *sideways glance* your options are pretty sub par. I'd beg and plead for ToB, where you can have lots of fun with the dwarf trope. The Dwarven Sentinel isn't as HORRBILE a choice for a PrC. Otherwise, for core I would have been a caster.

For the Return I would recommend the Favored Soul, as its fun, fluffy, and Quin can get a brother in arms! If your hooked on melee for the return, go either ToB, Gish(some varient), or homebrew. There are tons of awesome homebrew classes itP. Plus, you always have access to your class!
I spoiled it because it was for Mo, but you can read it if you wish. If any offense is taken, it was not my intent.

On with the game.

i think what you suggested is fine.
What's really killing Thoradin is a low to hit bonus and that little problem of not being able to move, and very mobile battles in the Tomb...
Even pre-Oasys-modded, moving around was important.

Are we still completely love-addled now that there are fewer Valeras and no smoke? Or can we think clearly? Just relevant to the discussion I intent to have with Winky right now.

Damn. Never mind. I just looked at the description for Teleport, and it proscribes intraplanar travel!

"Very well. I don't think we'll even need to two weeks, if you'll allow me a moment to have a word with Winky." Prescott draws some parchment and a pencil from his haversack and begins writing something. When he has Winky's attention, he says, "Darmok and Jilaad at Tinagra. Tembar, the sea at rest. What do you think, Winky? Doable?"

Unrelated to any of the Tamarian gibberish he just babbled, Prescott wrote the following for Winky to read:
If you go with her to Astral, you can Teleport back right after you arrive. Contract served.

But yes, Blue Squadron is under.

Dranga scratches her head, "I'll sign the contract..."
She shuffles her feet.
"We can't send Leonard... We need Quin and Eduardo, and I don't think Winky can physically go..."
She points to Prescott.
"You died in the Tomb once, and lost some of your magic... I've died twice... Or was it three?"
She struggles to remember, and Valera throws a comforting arm around the dwarf's neck.
"Come with me, and I can put you in a better place..."
She kisses Dranga on the cheek, watching Prescott from the corner of her eye.

"You had this all figured out from the beginning-didn't you!"

There's no reason for me to believe that you, if not Pete, had nothing to say concerning a) Valera b) Mo's Thoradin problem c) the bad luck of ticking off the Mysterious Warrior by taunting him about his offspring or d) the weather.
There are reasons I combined the OoC and IC; one of them is that Players shouldn't be isolated, even unto Player Character death

I don't even know what the rest of that means, but it's not an IC Action for me to reply to, so I'm going to disregard it.

There ... screen time.

There were things I thought about saying. I did research on Massive damage since I was just over the threshold there. I reread the entire variant section on d20. Noticed two of the styles our ninja uses there as well as challenge Harley referenced for the Assassin PrC. I did a lot that was game related. I reread a few of the older games. I had an awful lot of screen time.
None of those things were 'Veris Replied'.
That's the point.
Forget the point. Give me Actions for Pete.

TheOasysMaster
2011-11-04, 07:09 PM
Being invisible and unseen, The Beginning is a rather difficult target to hit.
The arrow arcs through the air, hitting a wall with no results.
Holding their position, the Sand Guards hold their positions.
Arrows bounce off their shields, showing Daina is still at work.
The Mysterious Warrior remains hidden.
"ذي كور إن فير! ديستروي ثم أل!"
The Mummy King sees that Thoradin and Maki have fallen to his terrifying image...
With the massive khopesh in hand he moves to the barbaria, flanked by his gaurds and slams the weapon through Maki's chest.
Unable to do anything, Maki can't even grunt in pain.

[roll0] Damage to Maki

Pharrah sniffs, "Ah thank you would be nice."
She points to the other poton lying in the sand at Pete's feet and charges runs to help Maki.
The spears keep her from coming to close, and Pharrah dances around before hurling knives at the Pharoah, who bats them away with the large khopesh stained with the barbarian's blood.
Seeing Thoradin as an available target, the concubines are torn between striking at him, or Pharrah who immediately threatens their liege.
But the opportunity is too great.
The arrows fly, black and white streak puncturing Thoradin's flesh.

[roll1]
[roll2]

His message delivered, Harley draws dagger and axe, runs past Thoradin.
"No worries friend, you'll be fine!'
The White Concubine screams in surprise as Harley lays into her with his axe driving her back with a loud screech.

[roll6] Will Save for Pete

The 'healing arrows' are an odd make...
The heads are made of a still somewhat squishy clay, with symbols finely traced along them.
The shaft and feathers are grey. just like the head.
Striking Maki twice with the arrows, there are minute flashes of light with each impact, and positive healing energy fills the barbarian.
As Pete's eyes fall upon the Mummy Lord, he is able to grit his teeth and move through the fear...
...the White Concubine is receiving a beat-down from Harley and is no threat, but the shuffling movement of the Black Concubine takes his breath from his lungs and Pete finds himself paralyzed with fear.
Lunging at Pharrah, the Sand Guards stab her with their spears, and she screams angrily.
Arrows sprout from the Pharaoh's chest, and he angrily sweeps the Columned Throne Room with his eyes...
"إنفسبلي أتكر! بور!"
Unable to locate Daina, he takes out his anger on Maki, striking the barbarian's with the fist clenching the odd symbol.
"تسه ذي دسرت كرسي!"
"I have a plan..." Pharrah mutters.
She strips away one of the guard's spear, and inserts it through the skull of one of the Sand Guards, shattering and destroying it.
The White Concubine tries to escape from Harley, but he trips her to the ground. He buries the axe in her back, and kicks away the her golden bow, and grim-faced, he juggles the red dagger from one hand to the other.
The Black Concubine takes careful aim at Pharrah, and she grunts as the shaft strikes her in the arm.
With Harley and Daina's interference, Thoradin escapes taking any more damage, but remains as paralyzed as ever...

"You don't have to make it sound like she's gonna diie!"
Dranga ignores the succubus.
"Thanks Quin... I don't think I'm going to need to flip a coin."
She looks thoughtful.
"The fact that Valera has a contract and a dagger for signing it ready made make me suspicious that she might be running a Xanatos Gambit of some sort..."
She waves her hand, dismissing the paper and silver knife.
"I'll take the demi-lich's original, if vague instructions over whatever alternative the succubus 'subtly' brought us around too."
"Yeah, that sounds about right..."
"...I'll go with you now, Valera."
"Excellent."
Dranga removes her spell components and a few other items from her person, and rests them with Leonard and Quin.
"You guys will need these more than-"
Leonard can't hear anything, evidently he'd fainted again.
"-I'll see you soon, Quin. And tell Maki I'll see him later and I enjoyed meeting him."
She smiles weakly and then turns to Valera.
"So, what have I gotta do?"
"I'll take us out from outside the Antimagic Field... You just stay beautiful."
"Thanks..."
Valera summons some things from her brazier home as she wills Valera's Two, Three and Four back into existence, one for each of the remaining men.
All three of them, reach out and place a clawed hand on a shoulder and gaze into their eyes.
"I don't think it's gonna work out..."
"...it's not you, it's me, and by that, I mean it's you..."
"...could you give tell that barbarian friend of yours if he's ever on the Astral, he's just gotta say my name three times, and I'll be there in a jiffy?"
Winking, sticking out their tongues and with quick pecks on the cheek, the Valera's vanish in more puffs of fire and smoke.
The original Valera ruffles Leonard's hair and skips out after Dranga, following the sullen dwarf into the Wondrous Foyer.
"You'll call me right?"
"You know it!"
"Awesome, I look forward to hooking up with you later."
"Me too!"
In a puff of smoke and fire, the succubus and Dranga are gone.

" HEY IS THIS YOUR HOUSE IT LOOKS SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME WANNA SEE ME SAY BLA 125 TIMES? BLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLA.. . "
Dranga's actually planning on becoming really really clingy...
...you guys should have tried turning the tables and seducing her!

An arrow burys itself between the Mummy Lord's eyes, and he screams in rage.
From the corner of his eye, Pete sees a spurt of blood burst from Thoradin's ear.
The dwarf's helmet, moved askew by some unseen force, is gently held out of the way as a length of metal bury's itself in his skull with a vicious twist.
Thoradin can't even scream in pain as his life quickly flees his powerless body.
Spreading his arms apart, the Pharaoh wills himself into the air with a curse from Pharrah who swings her weapon in vain at his retreating feet.
"Damn!"
Maki finds himself beginning to fight the fear, and as Pharrah angrily dispatches the remaining Sand Guards, he realizes he'll be free soon!
"Maki! We have to get me the Pharaoh's spell components! We can cheat!"

[roll0] Damage to Thoradin
[roll1] Thoradin's Fortitude Save to avoid the coup de grace...
Failed...

Spinning across the sand, Harley allows the Concubine to get to her knees, then bury's the dagger in the top of her skull.
As she struggles, he takes the mummy's head clean of it's shoulders with a swing of a throwing axe and tearing motion with the dagger.
"Beautiful!"
With a flick, the head flies of the dagger, which Harley punts into the Mummy Lord's Crypt.
The Black Concubine fires more arrows at Pharrah who cuts them out of the air with her black sword.
On Pete's end, he can see Thoradin bleeding on the sand...
But the attacker remains invisible...
Destroyed completely, the Sand Guard litter the sand with their bones and weapons.

[roll2] Welby Bolger's Initiative Roll
[roll3] Zombie Four-armed Gargoyle's Initiative Roll

Thoradin's eyes fly open in murky water tinged with red.
His armor threatens to weigh him down, and cause him to sink, but he's not too deep. Even through the red and the large floating shapes, he can see the bottom and that a sort of beach is dead in front of him.
The light of the surface dances a foot above his helmet.

The remaining Concubine, fearing sudden exposure on the sand makes for a better condition only to run onto a longsword blade.
In a swift hacking motion, Daina smashes the bow from the Black Concubine's hand, and proceeds to stab the wrapped woman in the stomach again.
The Mysterious Warrior removes his invisibility effect, lowering the slits that serve his eyes to look into Pete's.
"You... Disappoint me..."
But of course, Pete can't answer in return.
As the Mummy King lifts himself higher into the air, there is a sudden movement on the sand and he cries out in surprise...
Hassadur, revealing himself once more smashes the Pharoah from the air with his tail, hissing angrily.
As the Pharoah comes crashing to the sand, Maki finds his strength once more, and the fear is gone...
Replaced only by his rage...
Pharrah grins.
"Very nice..."

Actions please! Maki's got Actions! Team Caster has Actions...
Thoradin has Free Actions, doesn't have to worry about Initiative!

He has no components, let alone a stitch of clothing...
With a hoarse cry, Welby finally begins to panic, mind racing, he almost doesn't see the zombie gargoyle tear off the rest of Trevor's skull with a snap, and let the body fall back into the pit.
Roaring, it's mouth filled with zombie dwarf, the zombie gargoyle drowned out a crash of thunder.
...no Wall of Force...
Spreading it's wings, it hurls itself across the pit...
...Enervation won't do...

Ducking beneath the Orb, the zombie gargoyle takes ahold of Welby in it's claws, tearing into the halfling with a ripping motion, tearing the sorceror into bits and pieces.
Munching on bit and scraps of the warm flesh, the gargoyle sits by the wall, and folds it's wings about as it grovels in the bloody mess.
The rain continues to fall.

Eduardo watches in disbelief as Dranga departs, but does nothing to stop it.

He was close to signing the contract himself, but something held him back from volunteering, and not fear of what waited for him on the Astral.

Enough time wasted. I just hope the Succubus keeps her word and Dranga survives their... encounter. Dresden might not be able to save her since she has now abandoned her quest in the Tomb.

He picks the morning star up once again and heads back to the statue. The weapon had come away easy enough; perhaps the entire structure could be taken apart. What might be hidden within?

Let's see what we can see. Eduardo is taking the whole damn thing apart.

That woud be interesting.

But ever since reading the best blackguard fix ever, I will only play a homebrew version from these boards. and since this is core only, not going to happen.

Quin decides that disarming all the statues would be a good idea. He takes all the weapons and walks outside with them to detect if they are magical. He then examines the things left by Dranga.

TheOasysMaster
2011-11-05, 09:43 AM
Outside the Treasure Room, Quin finds that the weapons have an overwhelming aura of transmutation, and reek of evil. With Valera's charms fading, the last vestiges of her touch; the smell of cinnamon and roses, fade from his mind, chased away by this... taint.
It makes him feel dirty.
Dranga's remaining items include the map that Quin had found in the coffer, a rough map of the Tomb of Horrors and extensive notes. More notably, he finds a ring, a headband, cloak, amulet, gloves, and what is clearly a Handy Haversack. There are boots that appear to be of elven make, and a large book, as well as a wand. No crossbow and no bolts-she must have taken them.
Eleven scrollcases.
A bedroll.
No spell component pouch and no spellbook-she isn't going in completely unarmed, at least.
The items she'd laid to the ground all appear to be magical in nature, and the haversack contains the much more mundane things, such as three days rations.

Elfstone
2011-11-05, 09:52 AM
Once throwing the weapons as far toward the throne as he can , Quin comes back and examines the ring. Deciding it wouldn't hurt, Quin places his ring of Ethereal Jaunt into his haversack, he places Dranga's upon his finger. He takes the spellcases and offers them to Prescott, so he can identify them and use them. After this is complete, he stores all her items in her haversack and places her haversack into his. Once he is finished, he tests to see if he can move the statues by pushing or pulling them.

Totally legal by RAW.

TheOasysMaster
2011-11-05, 10:15 AM
So I guess Dranga, Quin, Winky, Leonard and Prescott just qualified for Blackguard. "The character must have made peaceful contact with an evil outsider who was summoned by him or someone else." Dranga already has the ranks in knowledge religion for it. She just needs to collect three feats and train her Hide skill. And turn evil. But I'm sure she'll have a lot to think about after this so...
Dranga...
...faces her Dark Fate...

Totally legal by RAW.
I know, ring of protection +2, though Quin doesn't know it.

[roll2] Quin's Strength Check, Southwest
[roll3] Quin's Strength Check, Northwest

The ring is a little snug; Dranga's fingers were a little smaller than his, but atleast it won't come off.
He certainly feels a little safer with it on.
Quin doesn't have the Strength to shift the Northeast and Southeast statues, but they shift enough to tell him they can be moved...
He can definitely move the Southwest one, and the Northwest statue moves easily.
They must have different weights.
Beneath the northwest statue a pull ring in the floor is revealed.

While I do think that those topics can be explored in this medium, I don't think it's the responsibility of the game group to do so in any meaningful way.

Part of what gives the game its playability in the first place is a shared language of tropes, not unlike a grand commedia dell arte performance. An inherent sexism is, some would say unfortunately, hard-coded into those standard tropes. There are male and female roles, like Il Dotore and Columbina, to take the Commedia metaphor further, that the audience / writers / performers (in this case, all represented by the players) have come to expect and know how to appreciate and interact with already.

If one breaks the "rules" established by the shared language, one has to understand why. Are you doing it just to subvert expectations and deliver surprise? Or turn the game into a dialogue about a societal ill? Or just explore an aspect of the human condition?

There is a place for all of the above in the format, but I don't think it's a great sin to let the tropes stand by themselves as sort of a pulpy throwback or mindless adventure tale. Not to say this campaign has been mindless, but it has certainly been pulpy at times. I think this has by and large been a deliberate choice by the DM and players, accepting and embracing a stylistic choice for little other reason than escapist enjoyment. It's not high art, but high art was not the goal of the exercise.

Surging with speed and anger, Maki hacks through the Pharaoh's spell components, dropping to the floor.
Roaring at the barbarian, the Mummy King throws his gold covered arms to the ceiling, asking Acererak for help...
And the demi-lich responds.
"مي فيثفل سرفنت، هلب إز أون ذي واي..."
The Pharaoh laughs at Maki and Pharrah, confident.
"Bonus wave!"
Leaping over the barbarian, Pharrah knocks the Pharoah's weapon from his hands, and promptly kicks him onto his back.
"He's all yours!"
Retrieving his dagger, Harley leaves the White Concubine on the black sand.
"Bonus wave? Can't be go-"
Then he sees Thoradin.
"Damn!"
He hurls his other throwing axe at the Black Concubine, burying steel in her chest up to the wooden handle.
Shrieking in anger, the Concubie swings blindly, knocking Daina away, and moves to retrieve her bow.
"ائل كل يو! ائل كل يو! ائل كل يو!ائل ك"
Daina silences her with unseen daggers that sprout from her wrappings.
Seeing Harley has spotted him, the Mysterious Warrior raises two fingers in front of his face.
'Quivering Palm' STRIKE!
Moving blindingly fast, the mysterious warrior smacks Pete in the forehead, knocking him over to the sand, frozen in place.
Then he disappears from sight once more, running and flipping across the sand.
Other than the pain in his head, and the discomfort of the mindless fear rendering him unable to move, Pete only grasps dimly that something bad has happened.
The Pharaoh opens up a Dimension Door, and steps to appear on the raised platform where the Throne rises into place with a final crunching sound.
Crown and scepter sit in their places once more.
Tearing out an arrow, the Pharaoh glowers across the Tomb before taking a seat on the throne.
"كم اند دية!"

What's this for?

Haversacks can be stacked.. Thats what I meant by RAW.
Unless there's an errata that I've missed, which is likely, I'd say you're making RAW into RACO, as in Rules as Convenient Omission...
The handy haversack is ... like a bag of holding...
And ...the bag of holding opens into a nondimensional space: Its inside is larger than its outside dimensions...

Nowhere is it mentioned what happens when a nondimensional space is put into a nondimensional space, but the idea of bags within bags is ludicrous! What's to stop, or more Evil-ly, me from carrying entire armies through the Tomb on one back?
No, I stated it earlier in Tomb and I say it again, mixing nondimensional and extradimensional spaces and summoning, etc is dangerous. The explosion Pete creates was causes by placing a filled efficient quiver into his bag of holding...
...bringing a non-dimensional device into a rope trick's space is a no go either.

[roll1] Quin's Strength Check
[roll2] Eduardo's Strength Check
[roll3] Quin's Strength Check
[roll4] Eduardo's Strength Check

The northwest one has already been moved far enough to show and allow access to whatever is beneath it...
The southwest one can be moved by Quin alone no problem...
...that leaves southeast and northeast to move.
Which one do they attack first?

Recognizing we live in a flawed world, is there a place for this discussion in online cooperative fiction?
Within the course of the game? I would hope so.
OoC, I could care less.

Is this an opportunity, an instructive moment, to use fantasy as an exploration of the ethical, a multicultural negotiation of meaning, as other media and genres have?
I wouldn't mind it.

Can bigotry be both purposelessly offensive and simultaneously valuable as part of a larger narrative or discourse?
I believe so. Not all characters can be perfect, even if they are heroes, and not all villains are completely wrong.

Not to say this campaign has been mindless, but it has certainly been pulpy at times. I think this has by and large been a deliberate choice by the DM and players, accepting and embracing a stylistic choice for little other reason than escapist enjoyment. It's not high art, but high art was not the goal of the exercise.

This is true though, the liberal tossing in of pop culture would make that obvious. I'm here to entertain.
A character quoting a Star Wars line might make one PC go  while another character learning that morality might be shades of grey may do the same.
I try to offer both.
One day I do intend to create 'high art', and some day, I will make 'crass pulpy' entertainment...
...but I find extended games of D&D are a good place to present both.
I'd say OotS, pretty much inspired me to that. There are incredibly dramatic moments that rub up against plainly rididculous one.

But I'm not interested in inspiring real world debate.
I want it in character.
For example, OoC, it has been mentioned Daina may have a bone to pick with Maki, and yet only Dranga has mentioned it to him. Misaat and Maki aren't necessarily bad people, and the other players and player characters aren't necessarily bad or good for not or referencing it.
I don't think exploring Misaat's morality would do us any good; it'd take up to many posts. I'd think exploring Maki's is where something truly good could be gained.
That's my response.

An inherent sexism is, some would say unfortunately, hard-coded into those standard tropes. There are male and female roles, like Il Dotore and Columbina, to take the Commedia metaphor further, that the audience / writers / performers (in this case, all represented by the players) have come to expect and know how to appreciate and interact with already
I have no idea what any of that meant, which just shows me I have a great deal more to learn before I can write "The Great Human Novel".

Quin helps the Master move the other statue before examining the box very carefully. He wonders if now is a good time to practice using his Morning star as a sledge.

It would be fun, since the ground has super low AC...

Also, how many rules will be used in return? The set was designed to be used together..

Anyway, I also have alternate healing rules that are very well done. Don't think I showed you yet.

*Spells of the Cure and Inflict line have a range of Medium (100ft +10ft/level) rather than Touch. When either is used to restore hit points the spells use d12s but when used to deal damage they use d8s. The Mass versions have a range of Long (400ft +40ft/level) rather than Short and omit the phrase "no two of which may be more than 30ft apart" from the target entry.
1 - Cure Minor Wounds restores 1d4+1 hit points rather than just 1 or 1d12.
2 - Close Wounds restores 1d8 hit points +1 per caster level.
3 - Consecrate and Desecrate respectively deal 1d6 positive or negative energy damage to undead in the area at the start of each round. The area of each spell is 20ft per caster level.
4 - Helping Hand also includes the effects of Spectral Hand.
5 - Shout CAN penetrate a silence spell or effect, in fact Shout dispels and counters Silence. A successful save against Shout negates the deafness but does not halve the damage.
6 - Antimagic Field has a range of Medium (100ft +10ft/level) and is not an emanation centered on you, but has an area of 5ft/two caster levels radius emanation.
7 - A successful save against Greater Shout negates the stunning and halves the duration of deafness but not the damage dealt.
8 - Firestorm deals damage in d8s not d6s and deals half fire damage, half divine damage like Flame Strike.
9 - Earthquake's Concentration DC for spellcasters is 40, the bludgeoning damage to creatures caught in a cave-in or a landslide is 15d8 with no reflex save for half. A creature caught in a cave-in or landslide must pass a DC 15 reflex save or die. Creatures on open ground are automatically knocked prone with no save and must also pass DC 20 reflex saves to avoid falling into fissures. Structures are dealt 15d8+100 untyped damage and creatures inside are dealt 6d8 bludgeoning damage +9d8 additional bludgeoning damage if the entire structure collapses with no reflex save for half. Creatures in the area of a river, marsh or lake are treated as though they are pinned beneath rubble as they are sucked into the quicksand and mud. Creatures that are pinned beneath rubble automatically face lethal damage if they are unconscious.

Also, every time I think about optimizing for this game I LOL at the 20th level monk you guys are fighting
I'm sure you guys already figured it out, but notice that I had to make this Monk 20th level and give him a supersuit to make him effective. Even with fixes.

Wait Damn it Oasys! Why do you separete text? XD how did the Paraoh open a Dimention Door? He cant cast defensively and i didnt have an AOO against him
Contingency

To enter this Prc you must have failed a save to be Paralyzed at least 3 times a day...
omg, lmfao

Sorry about vanishing.

Daina
Mysterious Warrior
Pharaoh
Maki
Pharrah
Harley
Mummy Concubine
Thoradin
Pete

Pharrah scoops up the spell components, cackling to herself.
"Oh, it's a whole new game now..."
Unknowing of Pete's paralysis or Pharrah's new find, Harley rushes to Thoradin's side, and seeing that the dwarf is indeed dead, stands looking for the killer...
But he remains invisible.
The final concubine crawls across the sand reaching for her bow, and Daina returns to her favored tactic: and shoots her in the back.
Pete sees nothing else happening, though he does hear...
"Bonus Wave Incoming!"
The Pharaoh considers remaining seated...
But without spells or his weapon...
He arises, and bellows aloud, and strides forward onto the sand.

Maki has actions.

Leonard nods sagely, "Okay..."
He tries to help Prescott open the sarcophagus, but they can't do it...
It's shut too tight! Sealed to thwart their combined strength?
"Has anyone else been wondering where the light is coming from?"
Winky races above to the mirrored ceiling thoroughly confused.
Having moved aside the final southeast statue, Quin and Eduardo find another pull ring, identical to the one in the northwest corner.

Once seeing the other pull ring, quin sets down his spear and places his shield on his back. Searching the box as thoroughly as possible before drawing his morningstar he raises it high with two hands and brings it down hard on the locked box. He continues until the box breaks.
Take twenty on search. I think quin can auto hit the floor. Consider each hit to do an average of 9.5 damage.

Skeleton killed while seeking ring wouldn't be by the southwest statue, would it? And said black ring looks nothing like the pull rings? And no one is interested in what the last action of the swordsman was?

=P

an inch of of reach
'out of reach'
Sorry.
As in the ring, is an inch from his fingers.

Skeleton killed while seeking ring wouldn't be by the southwest statue, would it?
Nope.
Ring-seeker is on the left, or west.
Scimitar and sack guy, on the right or east.

And said black ring looks nothing like the pull rings?
Nope.
It's a black ring that goes on the finger.
If it's black naturally or from being burnt warrants investigation.
The pulls rings are wide enough to comfortably put your hand through, and pull, lifting a section of the floor.

And no one is interested in what the last action of the swordsman was?
:smalltongue:
They smell a trap.
None of the found dead bodies have been looted, except for the one in the sand-bomb pit for his skull.
:smallamused:

"Don't loot the dead... Unless they're our own."

The wood of the box is polished black elm.
The morningstar smashes through the wood and the lock with the sound of splintering wood.
An extra hit for good measure clears the way, and Quin breaks through.
More treasure of a much more conventional nature. Standard gold coins from fallen kingdoms, gemstones and other valuable jewellery.
He can't see the bottom of the box for the shining baubles.

Good catch, Veris. I'll take a look.

Another strength check, because the first one didn't really tell us anything. Oh puny wizard... :smallamused: [roll0]

Prescott sets his feet lower and gives it another shove, hoping that it might bear more fruit. "Gentlemen, could one of you assist in moving the lid here?"

I was just thinking about looting all of the bodies.. The ring warrents a check. Once i get to a real computer ill have guin chuck everything interesting outside the room and check it with detect magic. Taking up his spear once more quin pokes at the loot for awhile, hoping to find something more interesting.

Best to let the treasure lie, I think.

Eduardo picks up the scimitar from the floor and walks over next to Prescott, using the blade as a pry bar to assist him.

I could roll the dice for ya.

The spear eventually hits the bottom of the chest, about a foot and a half down.
Leonard's eyes pop from his head as he sees the fantastic wealth. He must have heard stories of pirate treasures and dragon hordes.
Then he remembers where he is, and turns from the coins and rubies in disgust.
The scimitar comes away freely in Eduardo's hand, and the grasping bones fall lifeles to the floor. and together wit Winky's encouragement, he and Prescott manage to push the lid of the sarcophagus aside.
It contains the rotted remnants of an inner wooden coffinlike shell, a few bones, defaced jewelry with the precious stones pried out, torn bits of robes
and windings, dust, and a broken staff.
Among the remnants is a shattered skull.
Two broken horns jut out from the top, and tattered bits of hair and gristle still dot the pate.
Long grooves have been worn into the skull, beneath the right eye, curiously.
"Why, the demilich has long been destroyed, but his magical traps somehow survived!"

Preposterous. He wages war against the gods even as we speak. This is another trick, nothing more.

Eduardo will poke around among the remains with the scimitar, searching for anything useful.

"What if another impostor is using his name? The skull is right there..."
Leonard looks skeptical, thinking Eduardo has the idea of things.
"What now?"
He watches Eduardo scrape the sarcophagus contents with the scimitar to no result.
No spears launch at his face.
No fell creature screams for is soul.
No arcane mastery sears the flesh from his bones.
