IIRC they text says you have to hold it in front of you and release it as well.

If someone else can't put the item on then later make the argument that someone else can't take the item away.

Technically, if we're going to go by the ye olde fluff that 3.5 doesn't bother with, you harvest them rather than create them, since they're from the Positive Energy Plane.
