I think about running a game set in the High Forest region but 4,000 years in the past, before Netheril became the big magic empire.

Now I am wondering where to get the best info on that particular setting. Lost Empires of Faerūn should be an onvious first start.
I also have the AD&D "The North" and "The Savage Frontier", which wizards released online for free when 3rd Ed. started. There's a lot of stuff described in them, that dates back to that time.

Is there anything else I should look into?

There's probably some stuff in the Grand History of the Realms timeline about the High Forest.

Looks like that is when Earlann was around, maybe google the hell out of that.

The Imaskari as well, though they were further to the east.

This is about the time before Mystryl changed the Weave, so magic should be a loooot more powerful somehow. Lots of mythals and such.

Also lots and lots of elves.

The changes to the Weave came after the fall of Netheril.

OP: I believe the Netheril box is a free download as well, and worth checking out — it explains the rise of Netheril, and that history is a good place to start.
