So to give an update on an earlier thread (though I think it deserved a new title), I fixed my laptop. I bought a new fan on ebay, put it in, and it worked! Actually, it took me 4 hours to get the friggin' thing to work, but it did in the end (with the assistance of super glue).
Long story short, if you get an error message about the cooling system being messed up, you may just need to replace your fan.
