View Full Version : Build ideas? I'm stumped.

I've been playing a 16th level Wizard/Blood Magus (I know, I know...) for some time now, and my GM and I have been talking about rebuilding him for various reasons (mostly because Blood Magic is ritualistic and heavily fluff/story based... and I can't explode out of people's chests as a form of combat teleportation >_>)...

Considering I don't actually need that prestige class to access that particular school of magic, I was hoping some of you here could suggest builds around the theme of a Blood Mage. I've been extremely underwhelmed with the various splat I've looked through toward this end, and am having trouble with mixing it up myself.

Role:
I'm in cahoots with my group's Cleric to essentially split GOD duties, she buffs, I debuff, but out of combat I'm looked at being THE utility caster...

Theme:
Thematically he comes from a long lived humanoid race that lives a nomadic barbarian lifestyle... and also happen to harbor the ancient blood magic techniques. (It's a rare knowledge)

Anything I'm missing? Hrm... pretty good core caster stats: INT-22 CON-16 DEX-14

Thank you for taking the time to read this. :D I tried to keep it short and to the point. >_>

edit: Format and grammar.

Fatespinner could be fluffed as very blood oriented, as could Divine Oracle, given that blood and fate might be intertwined (blood as the metaphorical representation of origon and destiny). Just don't take the 5th level of Fatespinner unless your DM wants to waive the HD cap on it. Its...dumb. Divine Oracle is pretty sweet, though.

Hm... could a wizard take Divine Oracle?
Although... even then I don't know how much I could benefit from it. Unfortunately this game is house ruled heavily against divination / "seeing" / fate. Primarily because a particular god, and her followers, have that near monopolized. xD

You just need 8 ranks in knowledge(religion), skill focus: knowledge(religion) and the ability to cast 2 divination spells.

And you have all knowledge skills.

I'd suggest focusing on Transmutation as it is the most bloody school (probably). Master Specialist works if you fluff up the blood.

What's the setting? Escalation Mage from Faiths of Eberron could work well, in terms of using up your own body to amplify your spells (and at high level you can auto-quicken basically all your spells).

Also, the Eldritch Spellweave from Eldritch Theurge could be refluffed that way, but would require some Warlock.

Well, you won't be able to explode out of enemy's chests yourself, but if you take the other cyst feat from Libra Mortis, you'll be able to make undead burst from your enemy's chests. Being able to implant and then manipulate necrotic cysts could be fluffed as one of your blood techniques perhaps.

The setting is custom. But we can book dive as much as we want, as long as we can come up with a good way of working 'x' into the game. Things have been nerfed, tweaked, and house ruled before... such as the Blood Magus. That just didn't fit.

I will take a look at Escalation Mage, thanks. :)
Edit: That's.... a pretty bad ass PrC. O_o

So I've gotten as far as deciding most of the classes....
Conjurer 5/ Escalation Mage 6 / Blood Magus 4 / ...
Still need to fill in the last 2 levels. I'm wavering over Archmage...

I'd like to ask for some suggestions on feats, I always deliberate forever over feats. xD
Especially for casters. >_>

You don't really need the last level of Escalation Mage. And is that Blood Magus from complete arcane, that doesn't progress spellcasting?

I stopped at the 4th level of blood magus, because level 5 is where you lose the first level of spell progression.

Why not take the last level of E Mage? I figured using each of the metamagic abilities with out the needing the DC check would be relatively useful. Would the level be better spent elsewhere?

(Dang this forum moves fast xD )

Wizard 5/Escalation Mage 9/Tainted Scholar 4.

True power, at such a beautiful cost.
Don't forget to hit up Boccob's Aethenium.

Feats I love:
Uncanny Foresight
Reserves Of Strength (You'll want Daze immunity)

Did you get the Tainted Scholar and Escalation Mage levels mixed up? xD
E-Mage only goes to 6. >_>

I...wasn't aware of Tainted Scholar... I will have to look into it a bit, see if I can make it fit. There's a lot of house ruling when it comes to alternate magic systems. <_<

Oh, crap, no, I just always forget how long escalation mage is. It's important to put any tainted scholar levels at the end of your build if possible. The will save is passable, pretty easy really, but it's a complication you neither need nor want. You could definitely do something like

Wizard 5/Escalation Mage 5/Initiate of the Seven Veils 7/Tainted Scholar 1.
