View Full Version : Character Ideas for an upcomming campaign

A friend of mine is finally getting back to running his campaign... problem is I lost my character when my flash drive crashed and the papers went missing over the several months of hiatus. Fortantly I'm not the only one, and so several of us will be making new characters except for our kobold druid and our ??? bard ( I forget her race, probably human.)

So I'm looking for ideas of characters, not builds that are completely optimized into slaying everything.. but ones that are actually kinda fun to play.. We get to start at level 4.. So I'm trying to make the character fun at that level and progressivally get cooler.
Some ideas I have so far..

1. Jedi Knight
Monk, Battle Sorc, Enlightened Fist.
Has a Ki longsword.
Spell I know are Burning hands (If DM lets me, I will make it lighting elemental.) Hurl, Suggestion, Mage hand, greater mage hand, Jump.. etc.

2. Poltergeist Mage
Battle Sorc, Duskblade EK
Uses a number of magics to cause his weapons to "dance". (by dance, I mean like the enchantment. There is a number of spells that allow this, but some are weaker than others)

3. Illusion Knight
Battle Sorc? Duskblade? EK?
I'm not sure how to do this one, but uses things such as silent image, mirror image and the like to confuse his enemies, granting him flanking bonuses.

Now, I typically only play humans or as allowed, Lupin (see dragon compendium for this humanish-dog race) and we are not allowed to do anything with LA. Could do Homebrew if I get the green light on it though for race.. not so much for classes.

Any ideas on mine, or new ones? I'm always looking for ways to play new PrCs i've never played before.

Hm, for an illusion knight, if your DM will let you qualify for master specialist at level 3 via the precocious apprentice feat, consider master specialist in illusion for 4 levels. Free greater spell focus, and an increase in the DC of will (disbelief) spells spells means most of your illusions are going to have very high DCs. Retrain precocious apprentice down the road if possible. From there abjurant champion and swiftblade are a couple full BAB casting classes that might be worth a look. A wizard2/master specialist4/abjurant champ5/swiftblade9 can still cast level 9 wizard spells, and winds up with a BAB of 17.

Gray elves get you the needed martial weapon proficiency to qualify for abjurant champion and swiftblade, and also give you a bump to your primary casting stat.

edit: if you're willing to be exalted good, look up sanctified spells in the Book of Exalted Deeds, the spell greater luminous armor pairs wonderfully with abjurant champion.

what is precocious apprentice?

Nvm, found it. Actually that would greatly help my Jedi too..

Course I would have to take Sorc at first level, loosing out a on a few skill points. But since practiced spell caster only increases my caster level for casting spell, and most of my spells are buff for that one.. (except for a few of the dark side spells..) I could wait on getting that...

Cause I could take the MC feat that combines sorc and monk together at level 3 instead of six.

I just need to figure out one little thing.. What flaw to take so I can get combat casting at level 1 as well.

Well, if you're just looking for ideas then I'll throw one at you. I've been toying with a Half-Drow Bardlock for a while now. Multiclass Bard and Warlock. Half-Drow is just half-elf with darkvision so there's no bloody reason in the universe not to use it and it fits the concept pretty well. ^_^

Well while our bard player is the kind that doesn't like other people to play the same class as her (makes her feel less useful) I could do a battle Dancer from the dragon compendrium.

It actually inspired me for another idea.. TECHNOVIKING! (Battle Dancer/Barbarian..)

Something I've been trying to figure out though.. what is a swift blade? I can't seem to find it and I've even got the index's from Crystal keep before it went boom.

It's online only. One of those hidden gems.

Ah that one's going to be a little harder I think that I first thought. And I'd be only able to cast 8th level wizard spells for him.

however the Abjurant Champ - Do they get any weapon prof at all?

I do like that trick though of taking a feat to cast 2nd level earlier.. will be helpful for a couple things provided my DM allows it.

for the IK, I'm thinking of dropping conjuration and Evocation. I can use shadow conj/evoc to mimic those schools as needed..

know of any ways of getting sneak attacks for the build?

For Illusion Knight, you could go for using Shadow Conjuration, Shadow Evocation, etc. If you go for Shadowcraft Mage (Races of Stone), you can use any Image spells for similar purpose.

There's a lot of optimization you can use to boost the % reality of them, but even without that, it's pretty good.

I'd be leery of dropping conjuration, the schools I drop, depending on the build are necromancy, enchantment, illusion, and evocation, because the others are much stronger. And Swiftblade is only worth 9 levels, the capstone isn't worth losing 9th level spells. Hence why I only took it to 9 levels in the build I posted, which would get you level 9 spells, albeit at level 20. And the reason I suggested being a gray elf is because they start with martial weapon proficiencies, which make hitting those pre reqs easier.

Ah, necromancy might be fairly good for a drop.

Biggest problem with the swiftblade is my DM might actually want me to preform its special. I've got somethings to talk to him about with that sort of stuff though..

What about Wu-gen. Anything cool you can tell me on them?

What about an eldrich theuge? combining a sorcerer and a warlock together?

Use Knight Phantom (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050706a&page=4) for an Illusion Knight. Because if you are going to scare the crap out of people, you might as well do so from the back of a ghostly horse. :smallwink:

I went Eldrich theuge using that PA trick you guys told me about.

I need to know what is the best spells to pick for the class.. Currently, I'm using spells that rely the least on caster level, such as Hurl and swift spells.
