Couldn't find a thread about it, so I create one now.

Have recently installed it, created a character and tried playing it. Lagged too much but I'll try it again later. (If it wasn't my laptop, then maybe I had too many programs running in the background.) I also couldn't figure out how to fire my Player Character's weapon (a bow); I did manage to kill four monsters eventually, but I didn't see the actual shots. :smallconfused: But I was happy with my design and the game seems over all promising.

If you wonder, I'm on the Freedom* server and my first and so far only PC's name is Paladin of Asgard - though he looks like a pulp hero. (Would have picked pistols instead of bow-and-arrow if it had been possible.) :smalltongue:

*I got a bit confused and thought I had to pick the "Freedom" server because I played the "Freedom" edition of the game. :smallsigh:

I actually tried playing this just the other day. I liked how much customization was available in the power sets and I always said that if I was going to actually roleplay in an MMO, it would with with some over-the-top golden-age of comics superhero.

Unfortunately, the game doesn't like me. It runs and plays reasonably well, but only displays the menus. That's to say, I managed to get it to load the tutorial thing, talked in the chat, and even killed an NPC or two via the hud components that were displayed, but the actual game world was just a black screen. Which is weird because my ATI firegl v5250 would have been considered "average" when the game was released.

Funny a thread should pop up for this just the day after I reinstall.

@SlyGuyMcFly is the name and I play on Virtue. My current activity in-game is bemoaning the fact that my old decked-out-to-the-gills characters are useless until I rustle up 5 bucks for the Inventions and Auction House Licenses. That and rolling some new alts. Rolling new alts is something I'm always doing.

My main toons are Blutzkrieg (an undead gen-modded cloned supersoldier-serum guzzling Nazi cyborg) and Rajani of the Blades (an avatar of the goddess Kali).

An understandable mix-up  Freedom is one the two most popular servers, so it's always good for picking up teams and so on. It's the vanilla server in many ways, and I think has the most active PvP community. The other major server is Virtue, A.K.A the unofficial RP server. Despite rumours to the contrary the it is not entirely populated by horny catgirls and vampire dominatrixes. :smalltongue:

As for the attacks thingy, unlike many MMOs CoH doesn't have autoattacks - you must activate each ability manually. I got tripped up by that the first time I played.

Virtue is most certainly the server for you.

It recieved a pretty hefty graphic update a while back, so you're probably seeing that. Or not seeing, I suppose. If you can access the menus you may be able to lower the settings to a playable level... You probably need to turn off anything to do with shading and reflections (the new gfx tech significantly improved the engine in those areas).

@Acanous here, I also play on Virtue. If you need me to mule for you (Use the auction house so you can skimp out on the auction liscence) I can do that.

Freedom is the New York of CoH. It's not vanilla, really, Triumph is Vanilla. Freedom is... Freedom.

Ok! The server itself is not overrun, but pocket D? Is. If you're not playing a Bisexual or lesbian female character, you're in a 20% minority.
There's some players I could list in particular as being decent for RP but they will try to RP your pants off. Sadly, I think that would violate the forum rules, so just be careful out there ;) The server itself is pretty friendly, so don't get intimidated by the folk that are...overly so.

As for the attacks thingy, unlike many MMOs CoH doesn't have autoattacks - you must activate each ability manually. I got tripped up by that the first time I played.

Find the power labelled "Brawl" on your starting tray. Hold down Ctrl. Left click Brawl once. You now have an auto-attack. To deselect it, hold down Ctrl and left-click again. This works on any Click-to-activate power, but you may only have one "Auto" power at a time.

I'm a raid leader on Virtue, and most of my characters don't really need money anymore. So if you're new and you want some cash to start you off, copy this into the game and I'll send you some starting funds;

/t @Acanous, I'm new and would like some starting cash please =3

Thanks for the offer, but I went ahead and got the licenses. Marketeering is a substantial part of my pretendy fun times. :smallamused:

I'd contest your comparison of Freedom with New York on the basis that Freedom isn't well know for it's musical productions but I guess you where thinking less Broadway and more Hell's Kitchen, yes?

Brawl is pretty much the very last power one would want on autofire, by my reckoning.

This is a great idea! If anyone sends a message my way I'll be happy to help send a nest-egg their way.

Well, I wasn't actually thinking Hell's Kitchen so much as "You can find anything you're looking for there, but you gotta take the good with the bad, 'cuz it's there too"
...As for musical productions, that's on Virtue. Samuraiko does the videos.

Unless your first character is a Radiation Blast or Dark Melee of some sort, Brawl, at 0.5 second activation time and 3 second recharge is the best use of your autoattack for the first 5 levels of the game.

After that, yeah, it's useless, the damage scale shifts. There used to be a really cool way to make it useful again (When they added 20% chance for stun to Brawl) but then they took it out. Because it was too powerful.

Yes, I laughed, too.

When giving any advice about the game in a forum not directly tied to that game, I assume that the majority of the people reading it are new to the game or are thinking about trying. Which is why I gave a how-to create an auto attack at all, AND why I chose Brawl for it. (It's something everyone gets to start with, no matter what)

I thought I did that, but then i noticed that it was complaining about my drivers being out of date. A few stressful hours after trying to do this I managed to get my computer back to its original, working state. But the good news is that I apparently missed a couple options on my first look and can now see things!
(it was some combination of desaturation effects, water effects, and bloom that was causing the issues)

How am I liking the game so far? It seems like pretty standard MMO fare: kill things, get xp, kill bigger things. Not to say that its bad, just that its nothing revolutionary. Of course, the sheer variety of power combinations plus the costume creator certainly makes you feel rather unique. Also, if I may:

I CAN FLY, AND IT LETS ME ACTUALLY FLY! ANYWHERE! Heck, even DDO didn't have that kind of freedom and it was built around a game known for lateral thinking.

Decided to take my chances with the virtue server and created 0ld Glory, Defender of the American Way. (that's old with a zero, because jerks) He's a tank with willpower, stone melee, and flight powers and a personality that's somewhere between Liberty Prime from fallout and the Tick. No cape, because the publishers were smart enough to make you buy those.

If you want a cape, there's no need to actually pay, there's a mission you can run at level 20 to get them unlocked, and then go to any tailor or trainer to add one to your costume

I've recently picked this one back up, I've got my old 50 brute Dualblades/Willpower and a multitude of alts over on Virtue. I used to have a hefty nest egg o influence but reslotting to all SO's has pretty well depleted it. Currently playing a 18 or 19 Earth/Earth Dominator on the villian side. No backstory yet, but its a work in progress.

Acanous
2011-11-12, 01:25 AM
Yep, you only have to pay for capes if you want them at level 1. Same with auras.
You can unlock capes at 20 and auras at 30 respectively, by talking to the city representative in Atlas Park City Hall.

I have a DB/WP brute. I actually played him up and didn't PL. Was so much fun just CUTTING things.

City isn't all that revolutionary in terms of gameplay. Heck, it's older than WoW. The awesomeness isn't about a vastly different style of MMO, like it is with the Old Republic, but rather that you can do anything you want and still get to 50.
Like the Lv 1-5 Sewer trial? You can do JUST that, over and over, and still hit level cap.

Of course, I don't recommend it.

Like it. I personally like playing Brutes and getting their DoT auras, then going around to weak guys and dot aura'ing them to death while they wail at me.

To Malconvoker and anyone else who tries to contact me:

Turns out that us freebies can't use most of the chat interface. So unless you are within "Local" range, I can't respond to anything you say, but I'm not ignoring you. Not sure if friend or team chat works, since I can't really get people together to test it.

I've been trying this out lately as a freebie player, and it's pretty neat. Got myself a hero and a villain. Red side is communist techno-ninja Sergeant Socialism, Electrical Melee/Energy Aura Stalker. Blue side is elderly samurai Nana Steele, Dual Blades/Willpower Brute.

Question: are the servers for this more stable than those for DCUO? Because that might be all I want out of a game.

Acanous
2011-11-14, 03:08 AM
Yep, the servers are pretty darn stable. There's usually some schedualled downtime on tuesdays and thursdays, and when a new "Issue" drops, you get morning downtime for a few days while the servers adjust.

/Friend Malconvoker would work, then you can talk in your "friends" tab.

They don't hate free players, really. The chat limitations are because of pesky RMT salesmen. The devs don't want 'em broadcasting or tell spamming players. Some folks ruin it for the rest of us :/

Well, I've been having a great deal of fun with this lately, really getting into the Earth/earth Dominator of mine. If anyone is looking at going VIP for a little while longer their doing a month of ViP for 99 Cents. Could really use some points here, I'm one token away from being able to use the Mission architect with rewards, if I had just $5 damn bucks in me paypal account /sigh. Working on a Dual Blades/ Electric Armor brute as well. Going has been slow, cause I keep forgetting I'm not on my 50 and can't wade into a group of 10 mobs and come out smiling.

I made a trial account for this a while back. Looked pretty fun, but I ended up dropping it.

Of course, if there are any friendly GitP'ers to hang out with, I'll probably boot it up again. My character is... Dragon Tale, on Virtue.

Looks like there's about 4 of us on Virtue. My playtime usually starts 2 hours after the timestamp on this post.

@NeoVid on Virtue. Been a nut about the game since it released, but unfortunately played on a friend's account until recently, so I'm still a F2Per until I spend some cash on it... probably in the next couple of weeks.

One character each on redside and blueside.

Turns out freebies can use /reply to the last /tell they were sent, so at least you can answer tells from other people.

I also play this game, I'm @Valsione and I mainly play on Virtue. I've got about 2 dozen characters to boot, so that means I've got someone for just about any occasion people are up for.

scroll up XD
My global is @Acanous and right now my main hero is Malconvoker
I have other heroes and villains, but if you want to get in touch with me, either the global or /friend Malconvoker is the quickest way.
