Welcome kids, to this fantastic funhouse of irrepressible, unrestrained conversation in this sandbox we call the Playground.
To make sure we all all play nice, there's a few little rules we all need to follow. Not too much to ask, is it?

Rules and such:
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Sir, as a medical professional, I regret to inform you that you have a severe case of Skyrimitis. In my considered opinion, you must vacate the works premises immediately and proceed with due haste to the nearest dispenser with this prescription:

Once home, begin medication, followed by bed rest, or just rest in general for at least three days.

My thoughts exactly. Skyrim is, quite simply, an Elder Scrolls game. What this means is that melee is for insane people, stick with bows and magic. Become the Archmage and the Thiefguild master and you are the new god. AI is pathetic as always (though the dragons are slightly smarter then you'd expect).

All in all, its a "totally an Elder Scrolls" type of game.

So a while ago, I decided to thoroughly spade the trading system from Freelancer, to try and optimise profits from it. I got bogged down in data entry and stopped for a while, but I'm thinking about picking the project up again. I spoke to my OR lecturer today, and she pointed me at the problems I'd need to look into to solve the model I've constructed.

I've found that in order to solve it, I'll need a thorough understanding of the latest research on the Travelling Salesman Problem.

This hasn't deterred me.

I think I'm going to make this my official project for next semester - and possibly for the year-long project next year as well - and put it towards my degree. It's a computer game. Am I taking this too seriously?

Brief synopsis: There are ~160 planets and 38 commodities. Each planet buys each commodity at a given price, and sells a subset of them. Prices vary across commodities and across planets. Thus, each pair of planets has a profit associated, based on the difference between the buy and sell price of the best commodity between those planets. Each pair also has a travel time between them, based on how far apart they are. I want to try and come up with an algorithm that will find a route visiting several planets and returning to the starting point, maximising profit per unit time. This turns out to be very hard.

If and when I manage to solve that, there are extensions - bandit activity on certain routes, perishable goods that decay at a fixed rate in transit, contraband goods that are illegal in civilised space... it can be expanded indefinitely.

Even more so in Skyrim, since Nocturna grants you the ability to be permanently invisible in shadow and you can get a 200% Magicaka Recharge rate by doing the Archmage questline

No, frustration at their not even paying attention to the song. If you had read my posts thoroughly, my mom didn't even pay attention to the song, and my dad said it was okay. 1) When you have a prequel, the first thing you need to do is keep the feel the same as the original movies. Lucas changed this up (badly) with things like Jar-jar, comedy relief droids, and Midichlorians.

2) Terrible dialogue. This was also true in the original series, but when people see something they don't like they latch on to ALL negative points.

3) Villians die off like flies. There's a new one every movie, whereas it might have worked better if Darth Maul had been the main enemy for Qui-gon, Anakin and Obi-Wan throughout the three movies until Anakin's fall.

4) The story of Anakin. He starts off as what looks like an eight year old falling in love with someone over a decade older than him. He falls in moments from 'He must live!' to 'DIE YOUNGLINGS'

And others too numerous for me to care about, let alone mention :smalltongue:

I still disagree but i see many of the arguments. And agree with some of them.

Yes. The host of this show is such a stiff and upper lip, it's part of the comedy. And really, she's got some GREAT one liners.

It helps that the contestents are probably some of the coolest nerds in the world, and as such they are likely to get out some good comedy.

Also, a shame there is no Patrick Stewert, Leonard Nimoy, or George Takai, they are prooobably some of the most hilarious people of all of Star Trek. Though I can see not having Leonard there, he'd be too similiar to the host.

The critical difference is that the actors in the original movies managed to have enough charisma and acting ability to rise above the material they were given. In the prequels, we had Anakin Skywalker, a charisma vacuum who somehow managed to drag down the performances of everyone around him!

I figure some of the hate comes from the background of Darth Vader being revealed. There was never going to be a way to show him growing up and falling into what he was in the original movies. No matter how they chose to do it there would have been uproar with it never being good enough for the fans the series had.

Adimittedly it turned out pretty bad with bad development on a character not played by an actor that wasn't suited for the character design. But it was a no win situation from the start I figure

And honestly I am not a fan of any of the star wars movies, they all seem boring to me although the reason vary between the orignals and the prequels.

Tense is for the weak!

I am hungry and tired all of the time, these days. Usually only majorly when I have actual access to food and sleep, but the times that I have access to food and sleep are also the times that I'm supposed to be working on other things, or exercising, or socializing, or not eating and sleeping. So it's certainly a distraction and a hindrance, but a distraction and a hindrance that satisfies two of Man's most important/pleasurable needs. That is definitely the wrong hemisphere (even though snow isn't by any means restricted to the northern hemisphere, or any other hemishpere for that matter either). You need the winter to balance out the summer, and vice versa. They're fun because they're eachothers' polar opposites, and when you get tired of one, you can always look forward to the other.

I don't know where the little town called Gender lies, but it's certainly not close to here. This week we've finally had our first winter cold, which means that in the mornings, the ground was white with frost. It's so pretty.

Now we only need the first snow (and hopefully have it last). I don't think it'll come especially soon, however. It's getting warmer now in the weekend, apparently, and it's going to rain on Sunday... :smallsigh:

Here in my section of Wisconsinland, we've been having cold for a while, and a little frost. But the little snow we get doesn't accumulate.

Toronto is the most snow-fail-tastic part of Canada. I wish we got more snow. So far, we've gotten maybe 10 minutes of snow, which isn't enough to actually do anything. Last time I counted, mid November to mid April was 5 months. And only because the USA is huge in all directions doesn't mean that other countries can't be large in any. If you'd put a hinge on the southernmost tip of Sweden and tip the whole country around, the northernmost tip would suddenly end up in Italy.

And even though we both live in the southern half, it would take about 4 hours* by express train to get to the other's location (unless I'm wrong).

Those are not games, those are shovelware. If you ignore those, pretty much everything on the Wii is great except for a few things, like Sonic and Mario at the Olympics, and realy that's not a BAD game, just ridiculous.

I hate the Wii, and the DS. DS is too gimmicky. Wii requires too much physical activity.

ION: Just watched Tangled. Good movie, I was kinda surprised and really impressed. I especially enjoyed the villainess; she actually had a decent motivation.

What's wrong with CoD? Sure, its not Gears of War (chainsawing people in the face>stabbing someone in the foot and then they die) but its better than just about every Wii game that has come out ever.

Leaving aside disagreements with this, the existence of worse things does not make a bad thing any better itself.

Well every Wii game that wasn't a near-launch title. Or Kirby. Or Mario. Or some of the really good smaller titles. But so many Wii games are ... really bad.

So, every Wii game except for a large number of Wii games? I feel there may be some issues with your chocie of words. :smalltongue:

And how does having a throwing knife hit you in the toe make you fall over dead?:smallfurious:

Through the power of abandoned verisimilitude! Everything is possible when you stop caring about what's actually possible!

Also, you have to admit, in some games (mostly shooters) the motion control is great.

I have to admit nothing. No console control system can compare to keyboard and mouse for shooters.
Also, as far as I'm concerned, motion control is not a good control system. It's an interesting idea, quite possibly a step towards something actually good, but as it stands it's a gimmick, more likely to detract from a gaming experience than contribute to it.

I believe in this situation we should just agree to disagree. I will never accept the mouse and keyboard is "superior" because in my expierance it's not and there's nothing you can really change about that.

Oh, I love responding to Prank texts/calls like someone who's out of there mind.
Best prank call in the world:

1. Call a number 3 times, asking for someone, let's say, Ralph Schmidt, each time. Of course, each time the person on the other end tells you you have the wrong number. Continue apologizing.
2. After the third time, have someone else call any say, "Hello, this is Ralph Schmidt. Have there been any calls for me?"
3. Profit with laughter.

I kind of assumed that.
Why?

I don't have a job. But I'm only 18. Slightly more adult, eh? Hm. But yeah, even if I wanted to get dad to buy them for me it wouldn't be happening. Times are hard and games just keep getting more and more expensive.

I had a friend who would answer the phone thusly.

"Hello, Toronto City Morgue, you stab'em, we slab'em, how may I help you?"

It was the best thing. When my sister was in middle school, she would answer the room's phone with things like "Roadkill Cafe, you kill it, we grill it." When she was told to answer with "X's room, student speaking," or "Room X, student speaking," like the idiotic rules mandated, she answered "Room 666, Lucifer speaking."

I am seriously not joking. This is also the sister that flipped over a station wagon on a bike. Interesting childhood.

As far as I know the standard price for games has been £45 (or $60) for years now, and with the rise of the indie gaming sector there's a massive variety of cheaper stuff available too, so I'd have to take issue with this comment.

If you actually mean that you're less ABLE to afford games because of the financial situation, I'm right with you on that; but it's still (mostly, anyway) cheaper to buy a game than go to the cinema, if you think of it in terms of cost per hour of entertainment provided.

Have you had a look at the Aarne-Thompson classifications for folktales? Try Folktale #1: the Fox Steals the Fish?

My search-fu is weak. Is that folktale on the internet (which it probably is), and do you have a link to it?

The Aarne-Thompson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aarne%E2%80%93Thompson_classification_system) system of classification basically lists... the basic story archetypes, on which across the world there are variations. You can probably find a good one by browsing the Wikipedia page, they have links to some of the more important ones.

Actually, the best taunt is the poke move in Worms.

Not an actual taunt, but it works exceptionally well as one. It's a weapon that does exactly 1 percentage point of damage, but is massively satisfying to use to kill another worm with.

You want general manga recommendations? Most good series are pretty long, and actually Akira is relatively short. The other thing is you wont find any truly short manga like Akira, as when a manga is short, it's generally made to be self contained or cancelled.

So ... Define short.

Depends what you're into. I'm going to assume Shonen (manga for boys) or possibly Seinen (manga for men) are what you'd like best.

But ... More generally, what sort of things do you like? And there is nothing wrong with having Akira be your first.

Well, I'd imagine so.

I like science fiction. Akira does interest me, but unless I can find it at a library, I'd have to buy it in volumes, which seems like a large investment.
