In the Core Rulebook it says:
Humanoid creatures without two free
hands attempting to grapple a foe take a –4 penalty on the
combat maneuver roll. Does this mean that by taking a -4 penalty to my grapple roll I can grapple someone with one hand, keeping the other hand open for something else, like a sword?

Follow-up question: If I can, in fact, grapple someone with one hand, while wielding/attacking with a weapon in the other? Assuming one would be willing to take the associated penalties of course.

If you are holding something in your hand you'd rather not drop, say your weapon, and still want to attempt a grapple with one hand, you take a -4 to the check. However, if successful, both you and your target gained the grappled condition, irrespective of whether you used one or two hands to initiate the grapple.

As far as I can tell, only creatures with the Grab ability have the option of grappling a target without gaining the grappled condition by taking a -20 on the check. That leaves them free to act without the restrictions of the grappled condition while still grappling a target.
