Hi Playgrounders,

So I get to play the Kingmaker adventure path starting up in a couple weeks. We are running it as a 3.P game and I am looking at my class options. I am sorta hung up on Beguiler but I see that they have a tough time with some things like Undead and other stuff.

Without a spoiler, would a Beguiler do OK in this campaign?

Also, I am trying to build a beguiler that can cover some of the week spots or have the ability to deal some damage. I was looking at Beguiler/Swordsage> Jade Phoenix Mage or Beguiler/Rogue>Unseen Seer> Abjurant Champ. I know that its not optimal to gish a beguiler but flavor and versatility are important to me and if raw power was my motivation I'd just run druid or cleric.

Beguilers function decently against undead. Illusions still confuse the mindless ones, Blur and Mirror Image still protect you, Solid Fog, your shadow spells etc. If all else fails, UMD a Hide from Undead scroll and let your friends take them out.

If you really want a social class that can handle everything that might come up though, I suggest Binder.

I don't know about the details of Kingmaker, except it is very Sandbox.

Potential spoiler, only basic information, but you may want to read only if you have a general idea about Kingmaker's theme:

As players carve their own kingdom out of a rural area, I think a Beguiler will have a lot of fun. They are very versatile.

Also, a Druid may be a very good choice.

While I love Beguilers, think they are a very strong choice unless you run into an undead-heavy campaign (while not completely ineffective, they are fairly limited), I'm not sure about Beguiler as the spellcaster side of Jade Phoenix Mage. You've addressed that, and I'd generally always say "play what you want to", but as this campaign is very long, you may want to plan your advancement ahead and then look at whether the character works for you.

Unseen Seer can work well. Additionally dipping Swordsage instead of going rogue only may be interesting before entry.

How about Ultimate Magus?

I think a Jade Phoenix Beguiler could work quite well actually, especially in conjunction with Warblade. You'd be a kind of swashbuckler/magician archetype - like a Bard, only with much better magic and combat ability instead of bardic music. And your maneuvers would make mincemeat of any undead you run into (though incorporeal could still potentially give you fits.)

Without Spoilers-
How many people are in your party?
Are you filling the Arcane Caster role?
If you have a party that is not large and there are no other arcane casters, go with a more casting-focused build, like Wizard/Master Specialist/Incantatrix.

In my experiance Kingmaker has lots of downtime, potentially mountains of gold and generally short daily adventuring 'shifts'.
This means that crafting and nova builds generally work fairly well, in my opinion, at least the way we played it.

I think our party will consist of a Crusader, Cleric, Warlock, myself and an undecided.

I have absolutely no idea what the undecided player would roll, she will be new to DnD so I'm thinking possibly sorc or warmage or something easy. I think I'd be more of the rogue'ish face.

I have never played a full caster so I don't know how they run, I do however like the idea of spontaneous casting my spell list. I love my Factotum and I see this being somewhat similar with the skill monkeying and face-ability but I am concerned with dealing damage when needed. Would I be better off going into Shadow Adept or something, if so how could I gain some damage output?

In a soon to coming up game of 3.5 my group is begining we have about the same comp. Myself taking the Sneak mantle for the group. I chose the Beguiler as well. Good Skill set amongst some other cool options. plus some Battlefield Control when needed for the group.

Stealth, diplomacy, wilderness survival, and exploratory skills are the most important things in Kingmaker. Mobility is also important. A beguiler/warblade/jade phoenix mage will do very well in this regard. A straight beguiler will do fine as well, though you'll have a few fewer tricks up your sleeve.

Wilderness (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#rogueVariantWilderness Rogue) feat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#rogue) rogue is also very good for this.

Without spoiling things... If you go along the full path, undead do crop up here and there. They're only really an issue in one dungeon, though. And by that time, your party should have the resources to deal with'em even if your main schools aren't so hot against them.
