So, I've only made one charger before, and he didn't have any multipliers to his charge damage. Well, now I'm making a mounted charger (Spirited Charge) and I have a slight question.

What part of your damage is doubled/tripled? Just the dice (i.e., 1d8 with a lance to 3d8) or the dice AND strength/other bonuses (1d8+3 becomes 3d8+9)?

Everything is multiplied. I can't remember if bonus dice do, but strength bonus certainly does.

Here's a formula for you to follow:

X=weapon damage, your dice plus enhancement bonus. For instance, 1d8+1 for a +1 weapon.
Y=your strength mod, coupled with a multiplier of 1.5 if you're using a weapon 2 handed
The amount of BAB into power attack=Z

X+Y+Z

Wielding a +1 lance 2 handed would turn it into this (assuming you rolled a 5 with your d8), assuming a strength mod of 4, and BAB into power attack of 6.

6+1.5*4+6*2=24

Double damage on a charge from a lance:

(X+Y+Z)2
(6+1.5*4+6*2)2=48

Add spirited charge:

(X+Y+Z)3
(6+1.5*4+6*2)3=72

Don't forget to pick up ride by attack so you don't provoke attacks of opportunity. This can be obtained with a magic item if you're willing to buy a battle bridle (Magic Item Compendium).

General rule of thumb for multiplying: The only dice that multiply are the ones from the weapon.

This means that if you have a +2 Flaming Lance, an 18 strength, 1d6 sneak attack, and the craven feat (at level 10), and you charge for triple damage, while power attacking for 10?

(1d8 lance damage + 2 enhancement + 4 strength + 10 craven + 10 Power attack) x3
+ 1d6 flaming + 1d6 sneak attack

End result: 3d8 + 78 + 2d6, or 98.5 average damage.

Bookmarking this. Also, you sort of need Ride-By Attack to get Spirited Charge. :smallconfused:

Oops. Well, if you DM lets you qualify for things with magic items, it still saves you a feat slot, and as I recall it's not all that expensive.

i had another questions about charging

i dont have rulebook here but i thought it stated :

- vision of enemy at start of charge
- move in straight line
- no obstructing // hard terrain // enemies in path
- you must attack at nearest spot possible

now..is next example a valid charge?
O = medium PC
X = huge monster

start phase afther move attack with 10ft lance to square X

___O___ ______O ______O
__XXX__ __XXX__ __XXX__
__XXX__ __XXX__ __XXX__
__XXX__ __XXX__ __XXX__

moving through the squares provokes AoO
..but not if you have ride by attack?
