View Full Version : Spellslinger's Arcane Gun - How to Exploit?

A spellslinger can cast any ranged touch attack, cone, line, or ray spells through his arcane gun. When he casts through the arcane gun, the gun’s enhancement bonus (if any) is a bonus to the spell’s attack rolls or to the spell’s saving throw DCs.

If the spellslinger chooses to have only one arcane gun at a time, spells fired through the arcane gun that require an attack roll have a ×3 critical hit multiplier.

This is a really neat effect, but how can we best utilize it?
What are some good spells with saves that fit the effect criteria to be fired from the gun?

What about adding x3 crit to spells with an attack roll? Any interesting things we can do with that? (Other than Imp. Crit (Ray) or somesuch).

Get a bane gun, make your attack/DCs ridiculously high and disintegrate people you don't like.

Applying the dancing property looks like it would still let you cast spells through the gun.

im not sure how to manage it, but I have a feeling I could do something with Spellslinger+Arcane trickster for impromptu sneak attacks with gun/spell fun. I just cant get past the Pathfinder Arcane Trickster 1/2 BAB. it kills me inside a little every time I look at it.

Man, if you crit with Disintegrate.... 2d6 / lvl x 3 would hit hard.
The gun makes more likely to beat that fort save, too!

Any others?

Wizard (spellslinger) 1/Sorcerer or Oracle 19; Ignore specialisation costs, get lots of spell slots to power your gun.

Wizard (spellslinger) 1/Magus (myrmidarch (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/magus/archetypes/paizo---magus-archetypes/myrmidarch)) 19 could be cool if there were any firearms with an high crit range (apply keen; your spells are now 15-20/x3).

Wizard(Spellslinger) 1/Alchemist(Vivisectionist) 3/Arcane Trickster 10/Wizard(Spellslinger) 6 will get you 9th-level spells, 7d6 Sneak Attack and Mutagens you can use to bump your DEX for ranged touch attacks. Use the AT capstone to fire Sneak Attack Lightning Bolts, Disintegrates or Fireballs from your gun!

sadly the Wizard(Spellslinger) 1/Alchemist(Vivisectionist) 3/Arcane Trickster 10/Wizard(Spellslinger) 6 level build wouldn't work since you lose all of you cantrips for Magic Bullets. You would need to find a class that gave you access to Mage Hand like Sorcerer or a rogue with the minor magic rogue talent. for the prerequisite of arcane trickster.

Something I had to point out a couple times in the last thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12504221), Cones, lines, ray, or ranged touch attacks are the only things you can send through the gun. Enchantment in particular has only two spells you can send through your gun, the lion's share of spells are in Evocation, and Necromancy.

For the sake of it, all the Line, Cone, and Ray spells for PF wizards I could find:

0
Ray of Frost, disrupt Undead, Detect magic

1
Ray of Sickening, Ray of Enfeeblement, burning hands, Color Spray, Detect Secret Doors, Detect Undead, Identify, Detect Charm

2
Scorching Ray, Fire Breath, Detect Thoughts

3
Heatstroke, Ray of Exhaustion, Hydraulic Torrent, Pellet Blast

4
Dimensional Anchor, enervation, Crushing despair, Shout, Fear, Dragon's Breath

5
Cone of Cold, Waves of Fatigue

6
Disintigrate, Hellfire Ray, Cold Ice Strike

7
Prismatic Spray, Waves of Exhaustion, Waves of Ecstacy

8
Polar Ray, greater shout

9
Energy Drain

Ideally you want a kind of save or lose spell, to take advantage of the high dc. Disintegrate is a good bet, I agree, though it only hits one enemy.

Unfortunately there are not that many save-or-lose spells otherwise that can be applied to the gun, unless you count Prismatic Spray. To get around that, I suggest using Dazing Spell metamagic, which lets a damage spell daze an enemy for [spell level] rounds on a failed save.

Since this will be more than enough to kill anything, and few enemies are immune to daze, this can be incredibly powerful combined with a dc increase. If you want to get even more silly, you can throw on both greater spell focus and greater elemental focus for another +4 to the DC - add spell perfection and it becomes +8 for the spell of your choice (which will total +13 to the dc a "regular" wizard would have when casting the spell).

It's a bit feat-heavy, but incredibly powerful.

Actually, the Two World Magic Trait, choosing mage hand as a 1st level spell (since you don't have 0th level spells) would give it to you.

You missed at least Lightning Bolt, if no others. Its a line.

I love how you necroposted a thread from four months ago to mention how I was lazy with my research. :smallwink:

LOL I apologize... I didn't even notice the date stamp. I had found this in my research for doing much the same thing (the Spellslinger Arcane Trickster).
