Welcome, one and all, to the fifth Australasia in the Playground thread! The perfect place for all our friends in the Australasia region to congregate, meet nearby fellows and talk about the world around us continues to expand.

Previous threads, for your convenience:
Australasia in the Playground (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103114)
Australasia in the Playground II (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164343)
Australasia in the Playground III (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174334)
Australasia in the Playground IV (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191726)

Woo! Five threads! That's like.....four more than one thread!

Um......carry on. :smalleek: *shuffles off the stage*

In the last episode of Australasia in the Playground:

Other things that occurred to me while I was going for a walk this morning.

It was around this time last year that we started planning the first meetup. Do we want to make this an annual event? I'm happy to start a thread for it if people are interested

Discuss. :)

Interested, but the percentage of us living in Vic grows since I'm moving there in a few days now. IIRC, Serps lives in NSW anyway and would have to travel interstate wherever its held, Lady Moreta and Peregrine would be flying all the way from the other side of the country...and I won't be able to fly about so soon after just getting down there and stuff, hard on the bank balance. So, we may have to make it a Melbourne-based meetup this year? It'd be great if so, and I'm 95% sure I'll have to skip it if not, but if it can't be done I hope everybody tries their hardest to have a great time despite the enormous void in my absence :smalltongue:

That being said, if it's Melbourne based I can offer swordy entertainment. If it takes a little while to plan, I should definitely have three sharps and maybe more.

Hurrah, 5 threads. Go us.

As for a meetup, I'd definately be interested, and a Melbourne one would certainly be easier for me to get to. When was the first one? Around April, I think.

Hi guys,

Steam is having an autumn sale, which includes a major chunk of games, plus some extra special daily deals. There are two games I would like to bring your attention to, in case you missed them previously. These are the regular autumn sale prices and they may come up later on the super special prices later.

Killing Floor (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1250/) is currently 33% off.
Magicka (http://store.steampowered.com/app/42910/), and all DLC, is currently 60% off.

There's not much further for Magicka to go, most Steam sales will not go past 75%, but it might still be worth waiting in hope for that extra discount. If Killing Floor comes up, it's bound to be a much better sale than the current 33%.

P.S. Today only, Portal 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/620/) is 66% off!

P.P.S. If you purchased Magicka without the DLC, buying the DLC at sale price is not much more than the complete pack.

Gosh, five threads? We rock.

Also, I've been offered the opportunity to go to Melbourn in the next fortnight, I think it would only be for a few days, but I was wondering if people thought it is worth my time (and money)? And if you do think it is worth it, what is there to see/do?

I just had a most excellent night out with some friends, and I was wondering, what do you like to do with friends? Do you like to go to the pub? Stay at home watching films? Play games (electronic or tabletop)? Or do you mix it up? Or do different things with different groups of friends?

Just out of interest.

(Also, its really hard knowing what to type, I've gone through four possible posts before I settled on this one)

When possible, I usually meet up with my friends, then we end up at one of their places and play video games. And drink booze. :smalltongue:

I need to get together with my friends again. Haven't seen most of them in ages. :smallfrown:

Depends on the friends... one group of friends is my gaming group and that's pretty much the only time I see them, we don't get together outside of gaming. One friend I will meet from time to time and go out for a wander around the mall...

To be honest though, in Perth I don't have many friends and I very rarely do anything with the ones I have. My close friends all live in NZ so about the best I can do is email from time to time... though I'm in Christchurch right now so I'm going to email a friend who lives nearby and let her know, see if she wants to catch up.

Heya everyone! Killing Floor has launched a massive Christmas special that they like to call, A Very Twisted Christmas (http://www.killingfloorthegame.com/xmas2011/)!

All of the zombie specimens have been replaced with highly twisted Christmas characters! Instead of gorefasts, there are giant gingerbread men running around screaming "I'm delicious!" and "Please don't eat me!", instead of husks, there are abominable snowmen, instead of the usual stalkers, now it's Mrs Claus under the cloak.

Plus, there's now several new weapons! Including a rifle with grenade launcher, a husk fireball launcher, new medic gun, new combat shotgun, a claymore, and a revolver.

There's a whole swagger of Christmas achievements (available only during the event), as well as several new achievements for the new weapons.

If you haven't played in a while, fire it up again!

EDIT: And Killing Floor is having a FREE WEEKEND (http://www.killingfloorthegame.com/2011/11/30/kf-free-weekend-coming/)! Try the game out for free this weekend!

Killing Floor is currently at 50% off for $9.99 (base game only, but I don't recommend the DLC anyway, it's just models, no gameplay elements).

Magicka is currently 60% off, with the collection going for $9.99 (all the DLC - I do highly recommend the DLC for this game) or the base game for $3.99. All DLC is 60% off too.

These are the generic (i.e. not daily deal) sale prices and they may drop lower. I have seen both games get down to 75% off and they may still drop lower during the sale as a daily deal. Magicka's last daily deal sale was 60% off, the one before that was halloween at 66% off. All prices in USD, which is roughly equivalent to AUD anyway.

Killing Floor (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1250/) has come up on the daily deals for... you guessed it, 75% off ($4.99)!

If there's any of you who still don't have it, now is the time!

P.S. If any of you have been looking at the Metacritic score and thinking it was a bit lower than your usual, those reviews were made when the game was first released. Since initial release, the game has been undergoing constant improvement. The most recent update was this month with 7 new weapons and a new official map.

I was planning to go both days, but Saturday is now out of the question since I've found out that a grandparent's birthday is on that day. In Bunbury.

I should be able to get to the con on Sunday if I can get my older brother and his girlfriend to let me go home early with them. If I make it, I'll be wearing lots of purple (Haunter Gijinka closet cosplay! Yay!) and probably hanging around the TWA table.

I'd say there's some interesting things to look out for. Some of the cosplayers are really good, and last year there was a huge games room set up to the side of the main event. Should be the same this time around.

I personally prefer Supanova, but Waicon is pretty fun, too.

What did I do for Australia day?

I went birdwatching... and then got caught in a thunderstorm.

After being in the 40 Celsius heat, it was glorious!

Oh and a kindly fellow birdwatcher couple invited me for Oz day roast lamb and red wine. Good day was good

Also I am sooo glad that it's not 42 Celsius today...

I'm not sure it's a good thing to talk about on this forum, but suffice to say that running a bank isn't as easy as the media and politicians make out.

And to address that question, it makes sense that they would remove obsolete positions in order to maintain profitability, considering that the cost of credit has gone up massively because of the global economic situation (that is, it costs more for the banks to borrow money) they need to do something to save money.

(And for the record, I will not hear arguments about excepting lower profits, we live in a capitalist economy, it makes no sense to demand that someone put in the time, effort, energy, capital and risk required to run and maintain a large business then demand that they not make money off it).

Errr... Sorry if that sounds like a rant. I've had one of those days, and this is a topic I've had my ear chewed off about. :smallfrown:

It's cool. I do understand that running a bank isn't "hurrrrr press button get moneys". And it's not getting rid of obsolete positions at all, they're simply sacking people here so they can send the jobs to India and the Phillipines. That really does not seem fair at all. They're already making billions of dollars. I don't think cutting the quality of customer service because you want to save a few bucks is a good thing at all.

Fair enough, except that there is a large gap between "demanding that they not make money off it" and expecting that they might consider leaving a few hundred jobs as-is rather than doing everything they possibly can to push the profit margin ever higher.

Advance warning, though: I wear special glasses when using the computer and my mic headset isn't that comfortable, so there may be sudden stops in my movement between rounds/when I have few zombies on me while I adjust/clean something. Those are good points, I hadn't really considered that they might simply be moving the positions to an other country, because in that case I'd be tempted to agree. It would be better to keep them here (even if it does cost more) both for customer service reasons and public relations (it's good to be seen to be keeping jobs in country).

And like you say, it isn't like they don't have a little money to spare.

So this bird has flown from North to South America back and forth at least once AND from North Asia to Australia!

I wish I could fly, as well...

Sir, are you by chance a bird enthusiast? I like birds, but I wouldn't be able to recognise most birds that landed on my face, despite my best attempts.

I've been a birdwatcher since the day I was born. It's just the way I am wired. When I was a kid people would always say that I would grow out of it. They were wrong. I am doing my Ph D on the now! (speaking of my Ph D I REALLY should finish that research proposal...:smalleek:).

As to learning to identify birds, everyone was at your level at the beginning. Just pick up an identification guide and start with the ones in your backyard. I am sure you can tell a Magpie from a Pigeon and a Cockatoo from a Rosella. But did you know that Australia has 24 species of pigeon and doves (Some are quite spectacular (http://ibc.lynxeds.com/files/pictures/fruit-dove.woompoo.jpg)) and that in all likelihood you have two (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/25/Platycercus_eximius_-Woodland_Park_Zoo-6-2c.jpg/220px-Platycercus_eximius_-Woodland_Park_Zoo-6-2c.jpg) species (http://members.tip.net.au/~mos/cr_ros2.gif) of rosella visiting your yard?

The fantastic thing about birdwatching is that you can practice it anywhere above ground anywhere in the world. You really only need a field guide (a camera and binos and scope help a lot, but you don't need them to watch birds).

It's also a fantastic mental practice that has made me very perspective and you never know what you will see (e.g. my Godwit :))

Ok I will stop now

It's amazing what you find out when you Google something.
I always thought that Rosellas were called so because of their red feathers (yes, I know that not all are red). Turns out they were named after Rosehill, the place they were discovered.
You learn something new everyday.

They were also called pie birds as you needed 12 to make a decent sized pie back in colonial times.

Would you mind PMing me some career advice? See, I have a close friend who is incredibly passionate about birds, far moreso than myself, and is looking down the path of ornithology but has little idea what to do (and is also somewhat pessimistic about his chances/parent's approval and all that). What is with this spell check? It recognises neutrino, but not mynah?

Why are the trains in Sydney so much better than the ones in Melbourne?

Seriously, the gap in quality and service is monstrous.

And airport access via train! That's inspired! Why can I not have this?

First time in Sydney since... the Olympics, actually, and I was impressed.

Though I did notice a lot of out-of-order elevators. Get that looked at.

You think Sydney trains are better than Melbourne? :smallconfused: I've found them to be far more confusing, on par punctuality-wise, and many, many times more expensive. Plus since you buy a direct ticket instead of a zone ticket, if you don't take particular route - sometimes a particularly awkward one - the ticket won't go through the machine at the end and you get an awkward conversation with the guard. I'd much rather pay three bucks and get wherever I want however I want.

Weeeeelll, if you are in southern WA that's true. You only get Australian Ravens... if you are in norther WA you get Little Ravens and Torresian Crows...

Generally the name 'Raven' is used to describe a larger species while 'Crow' for the smaller ones . In Australia the size difference is only a few cm with considerable overlap (http://birdsqueensland.org.au/downloads/crows.pdf). So it's pretty much useless in the field. Call, range (and to a lesser extent behaviour) are the best way to tell them apart as they all look more or less the same:
Australian Raven (http://www.bushpea.com/bd/ph/laz/mi/australian%20raven%2001.jpg), Little Raven (http://graemechapman.com.au/catalogue/ausbirds3274/r/954201.jpg), Torresian Crow (http://www.photography.sushipunk.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Torresian-Crow-32.jpg)

You can find their calls with a quick google search if interested further :).

I was in Sydney for the BDO last year (I'm a native Melbournian), and I found the PT system a bit lacking as well. Unless I was missing something, you basically needed to buy a ticket for each leg of your journey - one night, I had to buy a train ticket, bus ticket and ferry ticket separately...

Not really I must confess. I'm just satisfied with knowing that there aren't many around where we live so I don't having to listen to their stupid cawing at every hour of the day. The last place we lived had heaps and they were the most annoying dawn chorus I've ever heard in my life.

And smart Europeans thought it was a brilliant idea to introduce Rooks to New Zealand... Though I am under the impression that they are being culled atm.

The only bird call that I do not like are the shrieks of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and only during early in the morning. Otherwise I really don't mind any bird calls.:smalltongue:

Not really... I mean, one would assume that the songbird name came about because the birds within the category all had a song-like quality to their calls. Otherwise they'd be songbirds-and-others :smalltongue:

I blame the people who began classifying animals.
They obviously started by noticing that all the birds we commonly think of as songbirds were alike, so grouped them into one category; Songbirds.
However, when it came time to place crows, etc., they were too lazy to fix their mistake, and now we're stuck with it.

As an aside:
How could you Benjamin Franklin?! Now the diagrams don't make sense!
Ignore that, I was just being crazy.

My mum and her husband were doing a bunch of birdwatching around their place. They were listing every single species of bird they saw, but within a specifically defined range - I think on the beach from the headland to part-way down the beach, in the sand dunes, and a specific distance inland. Last I heard they were up to something like 120-150 species before they ran out.
I'm thinking I should get a bird book for the UK... And maybe animals - I saw deer today

Aye that's called patch listing. With 'local patch' referring to a place you visit on a regular basis to birdwatch.

For a field guide I recommend the Collins Bird Guide. The Most Complete Field Guide to the Birds of Britain in Europe by Mullarney and Svensson. It has some of the best illustrations I've ever seen in a field guide, the information is fantastic and the layout makes it very easy to use.

If you can get the 2nd edition it's better than the first.

When I was a kid, my constant companion was the Observer's Guide to British Birds. It fit easily in a pocket, and had a beautifully simple layout - one species per double-page spread, picture on one side, text opposite. Unfortunately the only copies I can find online seem to be older and more dated than the one I remember, which must have been printed in the mid-70s.

Is there such a thing nowadays as a pocket-sized guide?

The guide I linked to isn't that big, but wouldn't fit in your average pocket. Still it has such a wealth of information that you won't regret getting it.

If you have an i-phone you could get an electronic field guide. Some are quite inpressive and some even come with actual bird song recordings! Unfortunately I don't have a smart phone so I really can't provide advice on this.

But everyone of my friends is wearing shorts or in the case of girls really short skirts, while I've been wearing a wooly jacket for the past three months just to troll everyone else who is complaining how hot it is.

Anyone else going to Soundwave?

I'm really looking forward to seeing Black Label Society, Sisters of Mercy, Cro-mags, Kittie, SoaD, Machine Head and Mastodon....among others...

Right.

So it did rain. A lot. The weather forecasters were correct.

Hi guys! I am a 21 year old male from Albury New South Wales. It is super rainy at the moment. What's with that?

It's been raining here recently as well, and at the moment, the sky is that bright white it goes when it's overcast, but not grey overcast.
It's too bright to even look at.

Anyway, welcome to the thread.

I'd try and will Melbourne's "wonderful" weather over to you, but it changes every 15 minutes, so I'd probably send you a heatwave rather than a thunderstorm :P

Four seasons in one day... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9sem05RHnM) I kinda miss it.

But yeah, got enough heat over here, don't want any more. Want rain. Lots of rain and weather I can comfortably wear trousers in.

Trousers are over-rated :)

We're sitting on low 20s and occasional drizzle at the moment, I'll see if I can send anything...

The weather here has turned gray and gotten a little colder in the last two days, which is a shame. It was fantastic on Monday, but I didn't get to spend any time out side and since then it hasn't been as good.

On top of that, I'm not at all well. :smallfrown:

But I like wearing trousers. My favourite weather is weather I can wear trousers and t-shirts in. Sometimes I miss New Zealand...

Congratulations! don't let wedding planning drive you nuts... and if it does, chamomile tea. It tastes odd and smells even odder, but it will calm you down like nothing else. I lived on the stuff the week leading up to my wedding.

I don't wanna advertise on the recruitment boards as I haven't got a game.

But I was curious if any of you awesome Aussies wanted to form a DnD MSN/Skype gaming group?

Since we're all Australians and I know time is hard to come by- the internet is often our only means. Same time zones are difficult to come by.

At least you'll have time. My fiance planned our wedding in 3 months with a budget that got shrunk by $20,000AUD.

(Her father is terminally ill and was given a life expectancy of 5 months- so she wanted him there to walk her down the aisle) Pulled wedding back from 2014 to 2012.

Killer.

Hopefully yours will be a lot less stressful.

A flatmate of mine did the same thing - planned the entire wedding in 3 months. I watched her slowly lose her mind. Congratulations though

I'm 27, but people are usually think I'm younger and are surprised when I tell them how old I am.

Heehee, I was 24 and Peregrine was 23 when we got married - I remember one day going into a store to buy paper to make invitations with - the woman in the store was surprised we were getting married - because she thought we were 19.

Having said that, I'm 29 and I'm still just a big kid... and I too look young for my age - as does my husband. If his hair is a bit long and he's shaved recently, he still looks like a teenager. Makes me feel old, the little horror :smalltongue:

Guys, y'know how I mentioned having a sword for sale earlier? I now have three for sale of various styles. I've got a claymore, a singlehanded sword, and a katana for sale. I'd rather sell to friends than some random ebay person that I'm not sure I can trust not to decapitate themselves with idiocy after seeing some horror videos on youtube. Just ask for any details if you're interested, by PM if you'd prefer. I'm more than happy to look up local blade laws for you. They're all sharp, functional and very durable pieces. You'd get a very interesting display piece, with functionality and your awesomeness factor would go up several hundred percents. Also I'd be able to afford to buy food, so you'd be helping me out as well :smalltongue:

Oooh, Claymore...
What're you asking for that one? Also.. what's Victoria's blade laws at the moment? I'm with the SCA so I've got a permit to own one, but from memory there's a bunch of hoops involving secure cases, lockable hideaways, alien influence, ID badges and whether or not you're allowed to wear pants once you own a sword.

Anuan
2012-03-13, 04:20 AM
PM me for a price and details on the blade. Victoria's bladelaws are basically as you've described. You have to make it so that people without a license to own and handle it can't get at it. Display is allowed through a locked glass cabinet of a certain thickness, but any locked box is okay for general storing. Unfortunately, that one's back in Queensland, so while you could come pick up the others, that one would have a little extra tacked on to cover postage.

Kittenwolf
2012-03-13, 08:09 AM
Dang, and here I was hoping I was wrong.

I might need to give it a miss then for now. The place that I'm in is pretty damned small, and getting a proper spec lockable case probably wouldn't fit properly in here.

Anuan
2012-03-14, 12:40 AM
I dunno, doesn't need to be too big. Mine's just in a little wood box with a case. Sure, I jacked it up with green velvet and stuff so it looks pretty when I open it, but that's not necessary :p

Oh, wait, you were interested in the claymore. Disregard. It's pretty big.

Well, last time I tried it was 'your parents make too much money.' But now that I've worked and live in a different state, it's possible I'm applicable. I've got a phone interview with them next thursday.
