First Entry
You squeeze your way through the broken crack ahead of you, following the light until its end. As you struggle through the gap, you emerge into a large room, roughly 50' square, with badly damaged masonry walls and flagstone floors. The entire room stinks of mildew, and there is black mold growing across the walls and floors. Despite the stink and the old, damaged look of the place, it looks safe enough to rest in and get your bearings.

Straight ahead of you you see a door made of solid wood, and another wooden door in the wall to your right. Over to the left there is a third door, but this time made of some type of stone instead. Old, but still working oil lamps hang directly above each of the three doors, producing the light that you followed into the room in the first place.

You notice that despite the mold covering the room, there is a path through it that is relatively untouched, leading between the doors to the left and right.

A blue and whited robed figure leans against a non-moss covered portion of a wall, cradling a large bucket in his unusually wide arms and hands. The bucket is filled with cold, murky water, but it is apparent that something dwells inside.
He take his time examining the room in silence to determine what creatures might reside in such a setting.

The moss seems to be a variety of lichen that thrives in the dark, damp environment found here. You're fairly sure it's safe to be around, but aren't sure if it's safe to consume or not.

You can't tell specifically any details about any life that lives around here, but the path in the moss would seem to indicate that there is at least some level of movement around the place.

Pulling tools from her belt, Hermino will take a look at the lamps to try and figure out their design and function. Secretly hoping for a magical element, she is also just checking to see if they are being fed oil or some other fuel. If not, she will try and determine how they have been burning, and estimate how long the light has left.

The lamps are free-hanging lamps from permanent fixtures built out of the wall. They are relatively simple oil lamps, with a simple oil reservoir that is burned for the light. The oil in the one you look at is nearly run down, and you estimate it will be completely empty in a day or two at the most.

Aurelia
The moss is a form of edible lichen, and whilst it will most likely taste horrible it will not kill you to eat it in a pinch. There are no signs of any decent sized animal life here that you can see, but there are droppings in the corners that are likely from rats of some variety.

This place reminds me of the old section of the library at home.
We had a person-eating fungus there. It took weeks to study its feeding habits thoroughly enough to write a research paper. Good times.

He speaks to no one in particular.

Aurelia blinks, trying to make sense of this outburst.

"So you just...stood there for weeks, watching this...MOULD eat people, and just scribbled down notes about it?"

Her eyebrow arches in bewilderment, so high it seems in danger of disappearing into her hairline, before turning away.

"I can't imagine mould being good in libraries anyway. Where there's mould, it's damp, and where it's damp, books fall to pieces and rot, don't they?"

None of the doors have any markings you can read on them, but on closer inspection the door straight in front of the crack has a space that looks to have previously held a sign of some kind, which has long since been missing...

Caylus
2011-11-24, 06:15 PM
"No, watching it eat people is unethical. My siblings and I took turns being eaten by it. When it noticed we were not edible, most of the times it would let us go. Our master would then scrible down the observations aquired from that experiment. It also ate the occasional burglar. Which was not unethical since they were there to steal books."

Meanwhile, he looks on the ground under the crack whether or not a trace of the sign was still around.

"And yes, normally dampness would be a problem, but the old sections only stored the stone tablets of the lost temple of Aang, who could withstand a bit of moisture. Does anyone see something like a sign or something? Could be important."

Cursory glance search check: [roll0]
And yes, Master Artificer Thorg was a peculiar person to work with.

"A sign? Hmmm..."
Aurelia scans the room, trying to find anything that could possibly fit the description. Her eyes seem to light up at the mention of the tablets, however, and she lifts a hand to hear face, brushing her hair behind her ears.

"Stone tablets, man-eating plants, and lost temples...it all sounds like the stories Mother used to tell, and I and all the kids in the village used to act them out when we played together, it was fun... So, did these stone tablets have any powerful, mysterious secret knowledge, lost for centuries and unknown to everyone except yourself?"

BX101 answered Aurelia:

"Probably, but since the tongue of the Priests of Aang died with them 126 years ago, we can only make educated guesses... Either the tablets speak of secrets that can turn a person powerful enough to rule the world at the cost of their immortal soul, or they're just records of the agricultural happenings around the temple. Master Thorg would kill to get his hands on the remains of a priest."

He then goes to inspect the stone door on the left.

"I am quite interested in studying the oracular abilities of your pet, Sir Spindle, but what would the best way of approaching an unknown door be? I am quite new to this adventuring business, you see."

Hmmm... what would the best marching order be through the door? I don't mind going first or second, since Warforged are quite robust (and automatically stable under 0 HP, w00t!), but I'm quite worthless in melee combat.

Can't we just take the lamps? If we fill one of them with the oil of the other's, we have a more reliable light source than torches. They also might be valuable archaeological relics.

The lock is a relatively simple mechanism, and after a few minutes poking at it you hear a click and the door simply slides up into the ceiling, making a loud grating noise as it goes and unleashing a cloud of dust.

Beyond the door there is a dark corridor that reaches about 10' across from you, and about 10' to the left before there is a wall there too. To the right it stretches away into the darkness. Across the corridor and slightly to the right there is another door straight in front of you.

If it opens away from them, she will take a spanner and press it through the seem to find where the hinges are attached, and then use a small drill to disconnect them from this side.

After some tinkering, and bashing, and muttering, and some more tinkering, you get the hinges off of the door, and manage to pull the door out. When you get the door off and can examine it, you discover that the hinges have rusted and seized solid, not budging in the slightest.

Behind the door is another small room - about the same size as it's neighbour. There is absolutely nothing in the room at all - no markings, no furnishings, no anything - apart from a large ironbound chest right in the center. The floor and the chest have a thick layer of dust covering them that look like they haven't been touched in a while.

The lid of the chest is stiff, from age, but not locked. With some brute force you manage to open it with a loud banging and a huge plume of dust as it drops down the back. Inside the chest is a puddle of water, and sat in this are:

A leather pouch
A rusty iron hook
A candelebra

You slide the door up carefully, to reveal a moderate sized room that looks like it was once a library, a long time ago. The walls are lined with bookshelves, and a table in the middle of the room has a couple of stacks of books on it as well. The whole room stinks of mold however, and from some puddles of what you desperately hope is water you can tell that the library has been disused for a good while.

On the right hand wall as you look in there is a wooden door, and on the left hand wall there is a stone door. Besides the stone door there is a small chest.

Besides the wooden door you notice there are four orcs huddled around a fire. As you open the door, two of them hear the noise and look up at you before uttering something incomprehensible to their friends.

The chest is mostly empty again, containing lots of scraps of cloth and paper but nothing of any value. After some digging through all of the waste you come across two vials containing a pale green liquid. The labels have been totally lost however.

Most of the books are too badly damaged from mildew and rot to be worth salvaging. There are a huge collection of different books, ranging on history books to politics and architecture, and even some books on magical theory. After some digging through the remains of the books you come across a pile of magic scrolls, also badly damaged from the conditions of the room. However, one of them looks like it has been protected enough to still be readable.

You take the potions in hand and study them, having a good look at the liquid, taking a sniff and a very slight taste and everything else that comes to mind. The liquid is pale green all the way through, but actually looks slightly darker towards the bottom of the vial. It has an absolutely foul odour about it that you can almost place, but not quite, and has a slight chocolate taste to it. You determine that they are made from the same original source, and are supernatural in their effects, but other than the fact that it has a positive effect on the body you can't tell any more from this studying.

The scroll you can clearly make out to be arcane in nature, and of a low power level that even a starting caster would be able to use, but the actual nature of the spell itself eludes you.

"Doors, but yes. Once you have openned all the doors we tell you to, you may go free. So let's start with this one."

He addresses his school,

"Can I get a search over here?"

"Spindle, the treasure for the orc goes out of your share, got it?"

Spindle

"The Great Ika has generously allowed her share of the treasure to go to mr Orc. By the way, what is your name? And better yet, let us give a blessing to your fallen."

Spindle clasps his hands together and makes a solemn prayer for the nameless dead.

Those are still alive. I didn't know whether or not Orcs were a limited resource around here.

"I will not allow a prisoner to die under my watch. But I also will not allow anyone to not pull their own weight, even if they are our prisoner.
And it would be far better for sir Orc to follow our orders instead of trying to join whatever/whoever is still around her. The Great Ika seems to be very uncertain about what lies ahead.

Now sir Orc, open the door! Have faith, and you will walk freely with your living friends again!"

With enough distance between him and the Orc (10ft from the Orc and within Spindle's reach), Spindle readies to grab and move the Orc from the door if something bad happens; to help the poor guy out.

Strength: [roll0]

The orc pushes at the door and it refuses to budge. Heaving on it harder, the door slips in the frame and bursts open, with the orc falling through under the sudden impact into the corridor beyond.

The corridor that you can see goes straight ahead of the door, with a left turn 10' away, and also round to the right slightly immediately through the door.

"Let's venture forth. Sir Orc, you remain in the back, but not at the rear. We don't want you sneaking away nor getting picked off by an enemy."

Spindle will lead the group with scimitar drawn. The left door seems fine so that's where he's heading if there are no complaints.

The corridor opens up to the left to a longer passageway leading another 30' away, with a solid iron door on the immediate left of this passageway and a wooden door on the right a bit further away.

The orc, muttering but going along with it for the sake of his life, pulls on the iron door opening it wide. As the door opens, there is a click and a length of razor wire comes tight across the opening bouncing off of Spindle but slicing right through the Orcs leg completely severing it.

Pulling open the door fully and walking through, you see a tiny room on the other side - no more than 10' square. Right in the center of the room, in the ceiling there is a round hole about 5' across through which you can see a faint glimmer of light. Underneath the hole is a mount of ash, broken bones, stones, dirt and filth as if it has all just been dumped down the shaft and forgotten about. On closer inspection you notice that there are footprints all over the heap, but you are unsure what of. The entire chamber has a stench of death about it though.

Strangely, against one wall there is a set of shelves and a chest of drawers, and leaning against another wall there is an old oil painting of an elderly man in a red robe.
