Question: does VS really allow Beguilers to cast spells of the next higher level (i.e. 1 higher than they could normally cast)?

Thew feat says you can sacrifice 2 spells to cast a spell 1 level higher that you know. Does a Beguiler really know, say, 4th level spells when he is 6th level? I know they have a set list, and automatically know all the spells they can cast, but does it work like this?

As a side question: the Apprentice (spellcaster) feat allows an arcane caster to know one extra spell at 1st level - since Beguilers already know all of the1st level spells on their list, would this allow him to add a non-beguiler spell, or (more likely) would it simply have no effect?

Cheers - T

"Essentially, your spell list is the same as your spells known list."

You can't ask for it any clearer than that.

Concerning Apprentice, cases like Beguilers and Warmages aren't mentioned, so you'd have to ask your DM. The assumption seems to be "...from your spell list" but this isn't stated.

Well so long as they have learned the spells some time previously which is easily done through a varsity of methods they should be able to cast them just fine.

yes, this is exactly how versatile spellcaster works. it's especially useful for early entry to prcs that say you must be able to cast spells of such and such level, and (while costly) you can laugh at the wizard as you get spells a full level before him

as far as apprentice goes, the answer to this is also yes. arcane disciple, sand shaper, anything that adds to your list of spells known means that it's available to you all the time (like the dreaded rainbow warsnake)

Those things all say what exactly they're adding to you though. (RS adds cleric spells, SS adds a list of sand-themed spells etc.) Apprentice doesn't say what you get, so "you don't get anything" is as valid an interpretation as "you get anything you want."

More likely really. By default, when you pick a spell known, you have to pick it from your list. That is what makes Arcane Disciple not so bad for a Beguiler -- it expands their list, which means they automatically know it.
