I have a 15th level Valenar Swift Hunter and I took the Wild Cohort feat to represent my Valenar Warhorse. I just need some ideas on some gear for the horse so it doesn't get pulped immediately in combat. I have about a 14000 gp budget

Thanks in advance for any help given

Horseshoes of a Zephyr (6000 gp/SRD): keeps your horse slightly off the ground and not impeded by most terrain obstacles. Tack on the horseshoes of speed (+30' / 3000 gp / SRD) to really move.

Barding works like armor for mounts, and you should be able to squeeze in some enchantements in that budget: anything that grants DR and/or miss chance will work well.
Rino hide armor could perhaps also work, for the horse to make some extra damage on a charge as well?

So, unfrotunately, horses have hooves rather than flexible digits, so you're going to have to get rings = earrings OK'd, rings turning into bracelet-like things OK'd, or using body slot (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#magicItemsOnTheBody) affinities(unfortunately I've forgotten where this is delved into other than the MIC, hopefully another poster just recalls it offhand or has it nearer to hand/mind) to switch things from the ring slot to another related slot.

Can't remember the associated slots for deflection bonuses offhand.

But... Amulet of Natural Armor, CON+ item, X of Protection, Cloak-analogue of Resistance (Riding Blanket? Saddle?), those are all fairly basic items that boost its survivability/durability. You can choose between bracers of armor, barding (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/armor.htm#armorForUnusualCreatures), or using bracers of armor style enchanting on some kind of livery/clothing for the horse in the body slot. Basically just multiply the mundane, non-masterwork(as that's a constant flat modifier rather than the base price) cost by 4 and you can put it on the horse. Should be proficient in most anything you can come up with though, but, well, DMs.

Probably can use Magic Item Compendium stacking rules to get most of the basics of what you want bundled up on an amulet/collar/reins/wossname in its neck slot.

Should be able to double up hand and foot slot items onto the hooves of the horse. DM might allow separate forelegs and hindlegs for gloves and boots properties on horse shoes.

One thing you might eventually do would be to give it a Mouthpick(Lords of Madness) weapon by adding the property to a minor piece of loot you acquire. Something like a spiked chain'd help it get in an AoO, especially if you train it to have combat reflexes and so on using the feats it gets from having extra HD as a wild cohort.

Alternatively, Incarnum Horse!

Though if you wanted to just toughen it up, there is a feat that can be taken mutliple times that gives one natural armor each time (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsterFeats.htm#improvedNaturalArmor) and there's also Improved Toughness for +HD to HP. Can probably get some better defenses than that though.

Hmm, as an alternative to armor, you could fork out the cash for a pearl of power so that the party wizard has an addtiional casting of mage armor for your mount every day.

Could also grab an eternal wand/regular wand or two of something like blur or mirror image for when you expected to go into a fight and had time to throw up a defense or two.

Pearl of Speech (600 GP, MIC). Get your mount to activate command-word items. If your DM allows this, add a Talisman of the Disk (500 GP, MIC) to have someone ride alongside your mount as a "sidecar".

Collar of Resistance (490-12250 GP, Masters of the Wild). +1 to +5 resistance bonus to all saves, same as a cloak of resistance, but cheaper.

Collar of Perpetual Attendance (2000 GP, online article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401c)). I may have mentioned this one before (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8235936&postcount=8)...

Collar of Healing (5000 GP, MIC). 1/day, immediate action to heal your mount/companion 50 HP.

Battle Bridle (9000 GP, MIC). +5 competence bonus to Ride, and gain either Mounted Combat or Ride-By Attack.

Opalescent Amulet (9000 GP, Dragon Magic). Grants icewalking ability, resistance to cold 5, and +1 enhancement bonus to natural armor.

Shrink Collar (10000 GP, A&EG). Resizes any creature to size "small". Useful for fitting larger creatures down narrow dungeon corridors.

Necklace of Natural Weapons (cost varies, Savage Species). Add weapon enhancements to your mount's natural attacks.

Actually, according to this http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031125a (article) (scroll to the bottom), hoofed animals can wear rings just fine.

Ah, good, I was having trouble finding that table. Well, that's a relief.
