The law has finally caught up with you, and you find yourselves languishing in a prison underneath the dreaded Arena. You've watched the Games before, and know fully what will happen to you in the next few days. You will fight hard, probably die, and if you happen to live, and gain the favor of the people, you will be released and heaped high with gold. Very few have made it that far, the sands of the Arena floor have been caked with the blood of thousands, all to the roaring cheers of Imperial Citizens.

The five of you have been thrown in a large cell together, told that this is your randomly assigned team. Each member of the team is responsible for the others, you will eat, sleep, live and die together. To make things even better, your first match starts in just a few minutes. You have little time to prepare yourselves.

Aerona looks around at the "team" she's been assigned to. Not a one of them the soldiers she used to serve alongside. She closes her eyes, inhales deeply, and slowly releases it again, calming her nerves. Her eyes ease open and she once again takes a look at her compatriots, "So, I guess we're going to be working together. I'm Aerona."

Hefting his mighty maul, Asteron speaks, "I am Asteron. Stay out of my way, and our foes shall die quickly."

Althuresian

Althuresian nods to Aerona calmly. "Althuresian," he responds with a smile, and adds, "but since it's a long name, Al will do just fine."

The Kalashtar boy rests his eyes on the Minotaur, staring at him neutrally. Probably going to be the guy who'll smash through the enemy lines first, but... well, what if it's actually a girl? How does one tell apart a Minotaur male from a female?

Alaris

The large Dragonborn is casually leaning against the wall, eyes closed. He did not say anything while entering the large cell.

When the other are done speaking he opens his eyes and responds:

"I am Alarisss, letsss watch each othersss backsss. Ssseemsss were quiet heavy on the melee. Ssswift and hard it isss then. Jussst try not to ssstand in front of me."

A rash of whispering comes through the corridor by your cell door. One of the prisoners that is allowed to roam free as a sort of janitor comes to it, and says quickly: "You lot are done for, they kept the four Ilas together after they captured them. Gods have mercy on your souls."

Streetwise Check DC: 15 to read
The Ilas are a group of five dragonborn that have terrorrized the lower parts of the city for months. They have been known to be very swift, getting in and out of trouble faster than the guards can kep up.

Althuresian:

"Four Ilas?" Al finally says, frowning slightly. "There are five of them, are there not?"

Al turns to the others. "You heard of them, did you not? Speedy thieves, I hear. Although," and he eyes the Minotaur again, "I'm sure their speed will only bring them to your maul faster, won't it?"

Roll, then post...

Streetwise: [roll0]

Aerona shakes her head, "I am unfamiliar with local criminals."

She thinks for a moment, going over her tactical training in he head, "Speedy thieves. They don't sound like a powerful lot. Probably their tactics will rely on surrounding one victim at a time and killing it. Our best bet seems to be to stick close, move as a group. So long as we don't allow them to separate us, to pick us apart one by one, we should be more than capable of surviving." She allows a strangely comfortable grin to grace her rocky features as the possible tactical scenarios play out in her head.

Alaris, listening with his eyes closed chuckles.
"That will probably be their sssecond tactic. If we ssstick together they will ussse their breathsss all at once. Better to each pick one and ssslay your target fassst."

Aerona failed the Streetwise check, and the guy who DID didn't mention that they're dragonborn, so she has no idea.

Al:

"They're Dragonborn," Al clarifies. "Though, I believe it best we concentrate our attacks on one or two targets still; the sooner one falls, the sooner he is out of the fight, is it not so?"

Odentin
2011-12-03, 12:37 PM
"Ah. That does complicate things a bit. Allow me a moment."

Her hand instinctively moves to her chin, and her eyes lose focus and twitch spasmodically as war games play out in her mind.

"I still believe it is in our best interest to stick together. Despite being dragonborn, if they've dedicated themselves to the arts of stealth, then they've likely neglected raw power. In that situation, they'll know to stay mobile, to avoid direct confrontation alone. Their breath makes it unwise to stay clumped up tight, but we can't afford to spread out and let them pick off one at a time, either."

She glances around at the others, taking note of armor, weapons, and body language, trying to get a feel for their abilities and fighting style, "I believe it would be in our best interests to split into two groups. You, and you..." she states, pointing at Alaris and Rëigar, "You two seem like you rely on mobility in a fight. Hunt and destroy, keep them on the run as best you can, but stick together, watch each other's backs. The rest of us, similar. We stick close, but keep as mobile as possible, when one gets close, strike quickly. Does that make sense?

Umbranar
2011-12-03, 02:43 PM
Alaris takes a short glance at Rëigar and than moves away towards him, studying him for a moment.

He lays his big hand on the shoulder of Rëigar and looks him deep into the eyes.
"Ssseemsss like we are going to bleed together, maybe even die together." He looks around at the rest. "Eyesss on the prey, let usss hunt..."

Looking Alaris in the eye, Rëigar nodded. "I'll not yield, never fear."

He turned to Aerona.
"In my line of work, I've learned that the best tactic that one can employ is unexpectedness. If the quarry is prepared, you lose nothing. If they're not..."
He grinned wolfishly. "Any nasty surprises, pull 'em out soon, but save the best for last, eh?" He winked.

He looked back with a question.
"What breath do you have, I wonder, and will it work on them?"

Odentin

The Kalashtar chuckles. "I feel like we're in an army, the way you take charge," he says to Aerona with a friendly smile. "Though, I am less sure on the nasty surprises part. I have some skill at... Well, we will be fine. Our victory is certain as the sun rising."

The Big Orc
2011-12-03, 10:28 PM
Asteron remains quiet while the others discuss tactics. Once it seems they have decided on there plan of battle he pipes up, "If our foes use their breath to affect an area, then we should split up, and get right up beside them and split them apart. That way, if they attempt to breath on us, they will also breath on there allies."

She sighs and sits down, allowing her head to slump forward as she relaxes her body and mind, preparing for the battle ahead...

"So, now that we've got a plan worked out. Spread out, stay mobile, two groups, split them up," he nodded in Asteron's direction, "and keep them guessing. Sounds like we've got this battle in the bag."

He draws his rapier, letting the dim light in the cell reflect onto the walls.
"Encore, on retourne a la chasse..." he whispers to the wicked blade.

He says to Aerona without looking up, "What are you here for? You don't seem the type to allow yourself to get caught."

Avengana Ila then lashes out against Alaris, clearly focusing all his rage against him. The strike his hard, leaving a lingering effect.

Althuresian:

The Ardent creeps closer to the fight, but still well away from any nasty breath surprises. Al subtly adjusts Alaris' morale, spurring her on to fight and dulling the pain of the wounds inflicted.

Meanwhile, he levels his eyes to the bloodied Dragonborn, leveling his halberd in her direction. "You're already wounded, so stand down and cease the fight!"

As soon as Avengana's attack lands, Aerona vanishes, reappearing within a blink of the eye next to the dragonborn, her blade coming down upon him, "Bad move, idiot!"

I'm assuming you're remembering the -2 to attacks from being marked?

Yes I remembered the -2 for marked, which only applied to the direct attack, as the dragonfear included you in the attack.

Aerona disappears, only to reappear and make a direct attack against Avengana Ila. The strike does a small amount of damage to the dragonborn.

Althuresian's boast seems to not effect the badly injured dragonborn. However, the healing on Alaris is solid, bringing him up to full strength.

Dragonish Ila stands up, clearly irritated at being knocked down, and attacks the minotaur violently. His strike clearly hurts Asteron, and knocks him down. He then strikes downward at Asteron with savage fury, recovering his strength as he does so. Luckily the second attack misses.

Drooish Ila is in a bad way. She sidesteps away from her tormentors, and unleashes a powerful attack on Alaris. It connects, dealing a significant amount of injury to Alaris. In a surge of power, she leaps on Alaris again, Bloodying Him. She also drinks something, and seems to be doing a little better.

Aerona strikes with lightning, knocking down two of the dragonborn. Her followup crashes lightning against the prone figures, injuring them, and bloodying Avengana Ila.

Alaris tries to catch his breath, recovering his composure from the massive attacks he had just suffered.

Asteron enjoys the combat so far standing and making a mighty cleaving attack. His strike hits Annalash's shield, but connects with Dragonash and Drooish. Drooish collapses, bleeding profusely, clearly out of the fight. This invigorates Asteron. Dragonash is clearly bloodied.

Analash Ila tries to save the situation, saying something that seems to help Avengana recover. Then he yells a command, and he attacks Asteron and Dragonash attacks Aerona.

Aerona quietly chants an incantation as she twists and hurls her blade at Analash. If it misses, it comes back around and flies at Avegana. No matter who it hits or misses, it flies back to her hand at the end. Following this, she steps over the fallen body of Dragonash and brings a sound-wrapped blade down on Avegana ((or Analash, if Avengana falls to Whirling Blade)). If he falls, she marks Analash with her Aegis.

Avengana gets an opportunity attack.

The last dragonborn falls, and the arena roars with applause. There is a sound of grinding and crashing from underneath you, as the floor of the arena seems to shift slightly. You aren't sure exactly what has happened, but you are not being lead away back to your cells. Your questions are answered by a booming announcement.

"Now for your entertainment, these victors shall be subject to vicious beasts from the Southern Swamplands."

You aren't sure what that means, but you will soon find out.

(You gain the equivalent of a five minute rest, all encounter powers restored and you can use surges if you'd like to top yourselves off. Also let me know if any of the AC/surge info is wrong, I thought I fixed it all.

You have gained 400 xp)

Asteron moves forward to attack as well, but the quick beast dodges his attack better than the other had fared Reigar's dagger. Nimbly, the creature retaliates with a quick shift of footwork, and attacks Alaris, and hitting with a solid blow, and bloodying him.

The announcer booms: "These nasty goblins are fierce warriors. Will the prisoners be able to survive?" its clear now that they are goblins, whose many tribes infest the swamplands.

The other goblins move forward, helping to press the attack. Two go after Asteron, trying to force their way through his defenses. One succeeds, dealing a small amount of damage to the minotaur.

Alth's strike misses, but his psionic powers reinforce Asteron's ability to fight.

Aerona strikes down at one of the goblins. The strike hurts it, but it still lives, and seems angry and ready to fight. Her second strike is not as lucky, missing the other goblin.

The goblin in the far back shakes his staff, and a foggy mist settles in the area. It becomes hard to see, especially the sneaky goblins. That goblin moves closer, empowered by the hiding mists.

Two of the other goblins maneuver in a strange way against Aerona. One strikes at her while she is distracted by the goblin flanking her. As she turned to deal with that goblin, another appeared, with the first attacker falling back. Of the four total attacks levied at her, only one hits, a nasty scratch that leaves a long gash down her arm.

Alth:

Again, the Kalasthar strikes with his halberd at a distant foe, shifting closer to provide Aerona cover from at least one side.

"I can't quite pick up our fallen ally," Alth communicates to his nearby allies telepathically. "Exhausted my psionics a bit too much. Careful, now."

Alth hits, wounding the goblin. The goblin seems to barely notice the scratch, ensuring that the battle will continue for some time. Aerona sems restored and energized by the attack (gains 4thp)

Asteron seems to snap out of his daze and he sidesteps to attack the goblins. Heedless of the danger, he moves to cleave two of them. One of the goblins slices at him with a blade. The goblin misses, but so does the barbarian, seeming like an incompetent warrior not able to hit either goblin.

Aerona obliterates one of the goblins that lunged for Asteron, bringing it down, squirming into the dirt. Her followup against another, however, misses, and the goblin darts away at a command by the caster, running swiftly behind Alth, stabbing at him, and hitting him (8 damage)

The Hexer laughs at Reigar, stepping back from the rogue. In two moments of focus, the cloud seems to shift down the field, covering the hexer and Reigar. He casts a spell at Reigar, and the rogue's eyes burn. He is blinded by the pain (save ends)

The goblin that Aerona missed steps to the side and attacks Alth again, while its counterpart steps up on the other side, taking advantage of Alth's divided attentions. The first misses, but the second stabs Alth in the back, the wound weeping blood (9 damage).

One of the weaker goblins decides that Asteron is a bigger threat than the horribly bloodied Alth, and attacks the minotaur. He just gets under the man-bull's armor, cutting a small gash. (damage 4)

Aerona tosses a potion across to Alth, and drinks one herself. She feels the elixir mending her battered body, readying her to keep fighting against the goblins. The crowd certainly is enjoying the battle, cheering at every blow, and groaning at every miss. The man with the booming voice is narrating the action, but none of the information he gives is news to those on the arena floor. Her wind-wrapped blade strikes the goblin next to her, and reverberates through its body. Blood spouts from its nose and ears, a sign of damage to the delicate parts of its head, but that just makes the goblin look terrifying.

(4e healing potions heal a flat amount, 10hp for the least ones)

The leader of the goblins casts a spell towards Asteron, sending a bolt of black energy into the minotaur's eyes. Aiming over his allies, the hexer misses even the large bull-man.

The goblin Aerona attacked returns the favor, striking at her. Between the blood in his eyes and Aerona's skill, the goblin misses.

Another goblin moves to flank Asteron, and strikes at the minotaur. The strike hits his back, piercing his armor easily, and wounding the minotaur.

Pausing for a moment, Rëigar stops all movement and listens. He absorbs the ebb and flow of the battle around him, substituting sound for sight. He hears clink of the potions that Aerona throws, the slash of her sword through an enemy. He hears the crackling of a bolt whizzing past. He hears a crunch and a meaty smack as a sword passes through armor and into flesh, followed by a bull-roar. He quickly draws another of his daggers from his belt, whipping it up through the air and down in a smooth, practiced motion, fervently hoping that he wasn't going to hit an ally.

Alth drinks the potion, and strikes with an empowered attack. The attack rends the goblin in two, sending a spray of blood across the arena. The crowd erupts in cheering for the gore and violence. The energy settles on Reigar, restoring and revitalizing the rogue.

Asteron bellows, and strikes hard at one of the goblins. The strike misses, clearly the injuries that Asteron has taken are affecting his aim.

Aerona maneuvers through the battlefield to attack the hexer. Her charge carries her past one of the lesser goblins, who stabs her in the side, making her blood run. (4 damage) Her attacks against the hexer misses, thanks to the fog (assuming you added this into your roll, if not it misses by a wider margin).

The hexer turns its attention on Aerona. It steps back, and sends a stinging hex at Aerona, smiling a toothy grin, daring the genasi to move. It seems to focus to keep the mist in place.

The last Blackblade focuses on Alth, attacking the Ardent. The goblin is desperate, and misses terribly.

"Er, Aerona, you don't... look too good," Alth stammers, seeing the swordmage teleport herself into the area at great cost. Still, he makes use of the flanking opportunity to strike at the enemy, hoping to reduce morale.

Rëigar takes a moment to breathe a sigh of relief. Surveying the battlefield, he sees Asteron and Althuresian preparing to finish one of the enemy combatants. Aerona, on the other hand, was in a bad position in a worse condition; who knew what other tricks that nasty hexer had up his sleeve? He moved to help, but decided instead to keep his distance unless necessary. Moving quickly to a better position, he whips out his longbow. Taking care to check for any damage, he strings it and nocks an arrow. The movements were a bit rusty, but he was able to remember how to shoot at least.

Alth's blow misses the goblin, even with its reduced defenses.

Blind Asteron lays his axe down on the goblin. It crushes in the goblin's skull, leaving the bloody and battered minotaur standing over the goblin. Red foam drips from his mouth, and he falls over dead.

A voice booms over the arena. "The prisoners have beaten back dragonborn and goblins! They have preserved themselves for another fight!"

You have gained 625 xp.

You are lead back into the holding area, where you are joined by a pixie with a bruised face and a half elf, similarly bruised and beaten. You are left alone for now, the three of you left alive, forced to leave Asteron and Alaris in the arena.

(feel free to talk amongst yourselves with the two newbies. Everyone should have 1025xp and can level up to level 2. You may take an extended rest if you wish)

The half-elf, who had been pacing restlessly around the room, turns at the sight of the three battered combatants entering the room. His eyes dart over each quickly, taking in what he can glean from their appearance and mood. Then he turns away, walks over to the wall, and slumps to the floor, obviously dwelling on something.

"Traaver," he mutters. "I'd welcome you to hell, but it appears you're already acquainted."

"I'd normally say, 'pleased to make your acquaintance', but there is nothing pleasing about a meeting under such ill circumstances."

Telepathically, he communicates to Traaver, "We just lost two in the arena. Might be mindful of that, I don't think fair Aerona takes it too well." Alth nods towards Aerona, then takes his own place beside her.

Briefly, he considers exploring if he can gauge her emotions, but the last time he gauged anyone's emotions didn't go over well.

It doesn't take a psychic to recognize that Aerona feels responsible for the loss of their two companions. Whether she feels remorse or guilt, or simply feels that she failed as a knight, is slightly more difficult to determine without extra effort...

If you gauge:She doesn't grieve for the loss of Alaris and Asteron, she merely hates having failed to protect them. More of a personal failure than anything else.

She runs her hands through her hair and lets out a deep sigh, but remains silent.

"Perhaps you would like an escape then." A man says, walking past the cage bars. He is tall with a black goatee and long black hair, the obvious look of pampered nobility about his pale skin and uncalloused hands. He holds a wine goblet that he drinks from occasionally, and his clothing are all of dark silks. "I'm impressed by your fighting abilities, especially you, elf ....having to kill your own companion...quite ruthless."

The man smiles, but it does not touch his eyes. You believe there is far more going on in his head than he will admit. "I offer you a choice. Stay here and die...they all die eventually, so don't be too hard on yourselves for loosing allies in the pit...or perform a simple task for me, and be able to escape this place for good." He rummages around in a pocket and pulls out a bit of parchment. On it is scrawled a poor map and a drawing of a rod of some sort.

"I want you to go to the southern swamps, and retrieve this item from the goblins there. They will fight for it, surely, but you can kill a few goblins with little trouble it seems. I will get you some better equipment before you go. Return it to me, and I will let you all leave the city unharmed and wipe your records clean here so nobody will hunt you."

He folds the paper back up and puts it back in his vest. "I will return later, after you have had time to consider it. One catch...I require you to wear a magic anklet that will allow me to find you should you decide to flee. These anklets will activate after seven days and weaken you, rendering you unconscious shortly after that time....just in case you decide freedom now is a better proposition than completing our bargain." He walks away, and at that point you notice the guards that normally stand outside the cell are missing. They do not return after the man leaves, which is very suspicious.

We must not let tyrants and despots hold sway over the threads of our existence! We must dissent, this man offers the opportunity to escape and you wish to stay and be run into the ground like a fighting cockerel!? You surely cannot stand for this injustice, it is beneath you to maim for the pleasure of pig-headed war mongers. I can tell fair one that you are of greater destiny. Your sorrow is not misplaced, but do not let it cloud your vision! The freedom this man is offering may not come any other way. Your weapon will be the one that smites the evils of our autocrats, by not if you stay here. Surely there is something I can do to convince you that to stay and die by a criminals blade is not the fate for one of your grace and strength.

Aerona recognizes that the heraldry comes from another land, and she isn't sure who exactly the knight is, but the fact his heraldry has a dove on it shows he is a Knight Justicar. Is there any chance that he'll recognize Aerona?

Having never met Aerona, it is unlikely.

"Well done, Reigar, but this knight will not likely recognize me. We should continue on."

Aerona affords the rogue a kind smile.

The half-elf lets out a sigh of relief, unaware that he had been holding his breath. "Well, that's something," he mutters. "I don't suppose you're planning to introduce yourself or go running off with him, then?"

Rëigar nodded his thanks to Aerona, then answered Traaver's question.
"I think it's best if we avoid the road until we pass him, actually. If he shows up at his destination and mentions seeing someone of Aerona's description on the road..." he trailed off, leaving the possible consequences to the imaginations of his party members.
"Or we could talk to him, find out if there's any information we can use. If he was supposed to be defending you, he might know something that concerns you, Aerona."

"And," the ardent adds hastily, "if nothing else, it may be your ticket out of this entire mess. I mean, sure, it's not very fun to lose a member of our uh, motley entourage..." his voice falters a little as he realises just how assorted their company is, "but all together I think it shouldn't be right to look away when freedom might come riding in."

Fellows. We've freedom in our grasp, we need not address this knight. He may only serve to slow us. I feel it would be better to simply circumvent him and continue. This job is precarious in it's execution it would seem.
Dogwood does not seem enthused about addressing the knight. He remains hidden withing Reigar's cloak to accent the point.

Nodding, he said, "Your choice. Shall we get off the road, then? He can't be much further ahead of us. I'll stay close to the road, and if Dogwood or I spot him passing us, we'll all get back on the road."

"Of course, the other side of this argument is that if we get spotted skulking in the bushes, it could arouse the knight's suspicion. Perhaps we would be better served by continuing on the road and paying no more heed to the man than we would to any other traveller?"

Rëigar nodded, considering the flip side of the coin. He was more accustomed to staying out of sight, but that doesn't mean it was always the best course of action.
"There are risks either way. I'm worried that he'd stop to ask directions or some such, and once he notices Aerona's armor he'll likely want to talk."
He shrugged. "I don't know. I prefer to hide, but that's just me."

Aerona presses forward as she speaks, "I'm not good at subterfuge. It'd be better to pass him on the road then to be caught hiding. It's unlikely he'll know me on sight, and on the off chance he does, we'll handle it then."

"Precisely," Traaver nods, "if he is indeed only one knight then on the off-chance that he causes trouble, we should be more than equipped to handle it."

Deciding to chance the encounter with the knight, the group continues forward. As suspected the Knight passes without a word, riding hard to his destination. Aerona wonders if there was a missed opportunity there, but any chance for freedom also means a chance for rearrest and death.

After a few more hours, you are nearing the southern swamps. Soon the roads will become much worse, and the chance of goblin attacks will greatly increase. If you continue on, you will be attacking the goblins at night, and navigating dangerous roads in the dark. If you camp, you risk being found, attacked, or set upon by nature.

Traaver eyes the worsening road and the setting sun with a wary eye. As a religious 'advocate', he has rarely had to rough it, and the prospect of trying to navigate a swamp in the dark isn't his idea of a good time.

"Perhaps we should find somewhere safe to make camp for the night?" he suggests nervously.

"Agreed. The idea of attempting to track and kill nocturnal beasties at night is not one I find appealing."

Rëigar

Rëigar frowned. "Why? If we advance during the night, we will have all the advantages--even though these beasts are nocturnal. We might be able to take them by surprise, and if we find that they outmatch us, it will be easier to slip away. We might be able to survey their den or lair and formulate a plan. And we are more vulnerable at camp, even with a watch. If a scout notices us, or if a hunting party or some such group were to attack us, we'd be asleep and in a deep mess. By waiting and lingering in one spot, would lost the element of surprise."
He hesitated, self-conscious as he noticed that he'd been speaking for quite some time. "The plan from the beginning was to keep moving and strike to kill, remember? If they fight in the night, we should too, or we expose a weakness."

"If we attempt to take their camp at night, we do so while they are in a position of strength, and we are in one of weakness. It seems more logical to wait until we are at the advantage before striking. Defense while we are weak, offense while we are strong."

We should never take the defensive willingly in this situation. It confers no advantage. We should keep moving. We can sleep when we are through.
Dogwood's voice quavers with nerves, he'd rather not get gobbled by a frog or something because they decided to sleep in a bog.

"And how do you expect us to scout out a camp in a forest in the middle of the night? No doubt they can see better in the dark than us, and carrying a torch would eliminate any element of surprise we might have otherwise had."

He sighs. "Of course, if the consensus is to push on, I will have no choice but to follow and help as best I can." He definitely doesn't look happy about it, though.

Alth:

As if awakening from a thought stupor, Alth looks about a bit bewildered, eyeing his comrades with some confusion until the entire dilemma dawns on him.

"I'm not so sure we'll fare better in the morrow if we're tired from lack of sleep," he starts slowly, "but likewise the dilemma of a nocturnal assault cannot be ignored. I don't seem to recall Goblins to be rather nocturnal, though..."

He shakes his head. "I have to agree with staying put for now. Attacking at dawn seems far more to our advantage than pushing hard tonight."

Rëigar quietly concedes the point. He nods to Dogwood and says: "Very well. We should then take precautions to avoid being easily detected or ambushed. We should scout for a campsite that's relatively hidden, and set a watch, at least."

After some searching you find a small depression that hides you from sight. You could even safely kindle a campfire in the depression without much of its light being seen. You settle down to rest for the night, wondering what the next day will bring.

The first light of morning wakes you. You haven't been disturbed, but the world around you is very quiet. After several tense minutes of listening, you finally hear a sound in the distance. it sounds like someone beating on a drum. Chants and shouting can be heard from the same direction soon after. It sounds like it is coming from the South, roughly the same direction as the goblin camp.

(sorry for the late reply, boss decided to call me in to work 6 days in a row. I have another 6 coming up, but will try to be more diligent with this)
