For mages using the fly spell.
I realize it varies some based on circumstance, i'm just looking for some general guidance.

How high up can you go before it gets hard to participate effectively in combat?

Thank you in advance.

Well if you're fighting melee characters, just out of reach is the best (so 10 ft for medium creatures, 15 for large etc). Aside from that I don't think there is a hard and fast rule.

^Low enough to use your ranged attacks?

An archer or caster with Long-range spells can comfortably fight from over a thousand feet in the air.

Assuming they have incredibly high spot checks of course, -100 to spot makes it pretty damn hard to see anything.

You need 15 feet to stay out of a medium creature's vertical reach. Hitting a 10 foot ceiling with a sword isn't hard when by RAW your hand reaches 8 feet. A large creature can reach 16 feet with his hand so I'm sure his weapon can likewise get to 20+ feet. 25 with a small jump.

I'd do 25' to get away from most jumping medium creatures, 35' for large. Farther if your close range spells can still reach. I mean at 60' for a single move you might as well use as much of that move as is reasonable.
