So I was just thinking about the urban companion ACF from the cityscape web enhancement (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a) after reading over a certain recent thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12357875#post12357875), and I got to wondering what, of the non-improved familiar options, would be good for a ranger or druid to grab instead of the PHB standard or splatbook options for standard familiars.

Offhand, the only ones that seem relevant to rangers between books and what I know of the dragon material are the PHB's raven for more stealthy scouting and standard dogs from one of the dragon magazines for a bit less scouting but being somewhat useful in a scrap as a flanking partner between Ranger BAB and some HP to go with it.

This is especially pertinent to me as I have a Strongheart Halfling Ranger 5/MOMF 2 that hasn't actually summoned an animal companion yet because I'd been using a wild cohort anyway. Currently it's just houseruled for convenience that if I took more ranger levels the bonuses from that would stack with the wild cohort's progression on the one creature, but I don't think I'll be taking anymore ranger levels since it doesn't look like I'll be able to retrain into a mystic ranger.

And either getting urban companion benefits on my wild cohort or getting a separate urban companion would be a lot more useful than the current setup I've got.

Dragon 323 has several familiar options, the top pick usually being hummingbird for +4 initiative.

I've always been a big fan of the Hedgehog for +1 unnamed natural armor. Hummingbird is definitely stronger, though.
