Right. I was trying to raise a wood golem to C.R 10 in preparation to apply other templates, but I ran into an issue: I have no idea how you're meant to go about it properly, and the guide in the books is not helping.

Could anyone give me a blow-by-blow of how monster advancement works in pathfinder, using a wood golem as an exsample? For the record, I intend to increase it's size despite not doubling it's hit-die.

Here's the critter (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/constructs/golem/wood) so you don't have to look it up.

Doesnt the Pathfinder equivalent to the DMG have a table with how many HD of each type are worth how much CR? There is one in the 3.5 DMG; so you just add HDs until it matches (HD traits being determined by type/subtype)

First off, the Giant simple template (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/simple-template-giant-cr-1) will give your size increase, and +1CR. Note that moving from medium to large gives a wood golem 10 bonus HP. Now you only need to go from CR6 to CR9.

Constructs (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/creature-types#TOC-Construct) advance with full BAB, d10 HD, no good saves, and likely don't need to worry about skills. Using the Monster Advancement chart, (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/monster-advancement) going from CR6 to CR9 should be 45HP (roughly 8HD, as construct use d10 hit dice, averaging 5.5hp/hd), and 4AC (likely natural armor). This will be +8BAB, +3 to all saves, four additional feats, and two bonus points in statistics (likely +2 STR). Add it all up, figure the new derived statistics, apply the Giant template, and you're good. Alternatively, you could avoid the template and simply increase the size (as is recommended in PF once you increase the HD by 50% or more), increase it's HD by ~11 and everything else proportionately.

Honestly, going by the method in the chart seems rather tough, for it's new CR, but I suspect the lack of nastier abilities (beyond being essentially a single classed warrior) make up for that. If it's too rough, adjust things as appropriate.

Okay, where does it say how much save bonuses it gets each hit-die?
