View Full Version : Any way to get Spell Focus for free?

Hey all. I need help again

My google-fu failed and so I am asking the Playground in it's infinite wisdom and knowledge:

Is there any way to get the Spell Focus feat for free? I mean without actually using a feat slot?

Is there an Item, a Prestige Class or a Mystic Location of some sort that grants it?

I want to get into Archmage with one of my Characters but I'm totally feat starved. Money isn't that much of an issue and I think I could take 1 or 2 levels in a prestige class, if it progresses arcane casting and grants me that feat :smallwink:

All books that I know of are okay, including some 3rd party stuff, 3.0 stuff and dragon and dungeon magazines.

Thanks in advance for your help

In the case that you already meet prerequisites, you could dip Loremaster and get the secret that grants a bonus feat. If you would need to pick up Skill Focus (Knowledge) for it, you can get that from Frog God's Fane, from Complete Scoundrel.

That's a bit of an 'if' though. Three metamagic or item creation feats, seven divinations, and you'd need at least 24 intelligence to pick up the secret (well, with only one level- if you took more it'd be easy).

Dark Chaos feat shuffle combined with a Magical Location feat?

Fairly cheesy :smallwink:

Skill Focus (Knowledge)

Something else:
Harper Mage (MoF 28) gets that for free (needs Alertness, Education and Extend Spell) while anyone with a Familiar gets Alertness for free, Extend Spell is quiet a good feat and I got something very nice for Education from the MoF Errata:

"Page 29: Requirements list for the Harper mage
Remove Education from the Feats line. Add Knowledge (local) 5 ranks to the Skills line."

Another something: Mage-Killer (MoF 33) gets Spell Focuses for free, but has some requirements.

Damn, Mage-Killer would be nice if it didn't have those requirements.

Looks like I have to look how to get 2 more Int in the next few levels for a Loremaster dip, I already have the divinations and metamagics and I am asking the DM for a sidequest to visit the Frog God's Fane.

Ithandor, good suggestion but a bit too cheesy for this campain

Thank you all for your help

wizards can pick SF(whatever) as one of their bonus feats. did you burn all of yours on metamagic to get into archmage? what's your build thus far and when're you looking to enter archmage? the absolute earliest you can qualify is level 14

I think Master Specialist give spell focus on your chosen school and the requirements are not that bad, coupled with loremaster you could get two at least with minimal cost.

It actually gives Skill Focus (spellcraft). However, since that is also a prerequisite for Archmage, it is essentially a free feat slot.

If you're a Human, Human Paragon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/racialParagonClasses.htm) gives you a bonus general feat at level 2 and it a great class. You would lose 1 CL, but you also get +2 to an ability score at level 3.

master specialist actually requires spell focus on your chosen school. however, as elric said, it does give skill focus (spellcraft) for archmage, so you're getting 2 feats for the price of 1 with a 1 lvl dip. MS is almost always worth staying in for a couple levels for your minor school esoterica depending on what you're specialising in. HP's the best, there're few builds it doesn't help, and a wizard can lose 1 CL no problem

Well, my build is kind of complicated because of a multitude of Houserules but essentially I'm a Wizard3/Beguiler2/Homebrewed Prestige4

I have 4 levels to play with and thought about getting into Archmage at 16 to get all levels in it before epic.

I have Skill Focus(Spellcraft) and many metamagic feats and metamagic reducers.

But how in the name of Gygax have I forgotten about the Human Paragon

Thank you all for your great help. Human Paragon 3 and Loremaster 1 will give me both feats I need without losing to much

If you don't mind losing another caster level, a 1 level dip into cloistered cleric could get you extend spell via the planning domain, spell focus (enchantment) via the domination domain, and knowledge devotion by trading in the knowledge domain.

There is a location in sandstorm that grants iron will for a gp value (the otungan(sp?) hole). You can then embrace the dark chaos (a spell) and then shun the dark chaos (another spell) to turn that feat into any other feat you qualify for, and then atone away any alignment issues.

Embrace the dark chaos turns any feat you have into a feat from a small list. Shun the dark chaos turns any feat from that list into any feat you qualify for. Get iron will for GP, turn iron will into evil feat, turn evil feat into spell focus.
