The events of the last few days have had many people on edge, in Chalym and beyond. Reports of the prince of Garganth and the incapacitating of the King have the people of Garganth in an uproar. The sightings of distant people just at the Chalym border, when contact was attempted by the soldiers at the Dragon Hold, the strangers fled before they were even within shouting range. Even King Barin of Chalym has become worried by these events, and his eyes seem to dart to the corners, as though he expected a hidden blade to take his life. For these reasons and more, he called his son, Armin, and a collection of his friends, guardians, and a particular shaman before him.

"Armin, my son, I have a task that needs your attentions, and I have called the rest of you to see him, as well as yourselves, safely to the completion of this important quest," He said, his eyes looking tired and the bags beneath them indicative of how busy and worried he has been for the past ten-days. He smiled to his son as he finished speaking, looking at him as only a father could.

Mirek sits off to the side, nose in one of his books, quietly ignoring everything being said. What do the happenings in Garganth have to do with him? So little did it concern him that he hadn't even paid enough attention to know what exactly had happened. Probably just some petty squabble between nobles or some such nonsense.

Loro straightened at the sound of his liege's voice and listened intently. Attentiveness was one of the many virtues of a knight, and he waited patiently for his king to explain what their mission would be. As he looked around at the other faces in the room, most of which he recognized from the short time he had been serving as a cavalier, he smiled. A merry crew of gentlemen, in service of their king. This is how legends start, Loro thought to himself. Although, to be fair, Loro though this to himself prior to most things he did.

The prince knelt calmly before his father, the robes and cloak that covered his body resting solidly against the floor.

"What is it that you wish me to do, father." He asks, his tone gentle and ... almost eager. He didn't know some of his to be retinue all that well, but he certainly did know some of them.

It would be interesting, and me mentally noted to himself to talk to each and every one of them at some point. Just to show them that he actually cared for those that followed him. It was something he'd often fretted about....

Anderson surveyed the people gathered in the king's throne room. It wouldn't be the group he would have chosen to safeguard the life of Chalym's heir, but it wasn't his place to question's the king's choices. He would do his duty to his king. Even if they were utterly incomprehensible.

"As you command, you're majesty. I will do my best to prove yourself worthy of the trust you placed in me."

Espada enters the room together with the prince and stands a bit close to him. She however doesn't kneel like him or shows any sign of acknowlege anyone's presence

She could recognize some of the faces. Meaningless. The King was probably about to give them some dangerous mission. Guardianship of Armin was probably a bit harder than it was supposed to be...

Pulling her hood a bit more, to conceal the scales that covered part of her face. The woman keeps her eyes on the King, though truth be told, they aren't quite focused on him. Distracted and almost closed as a matter of fact. She trusted her hearing more. People could hide and she could only focus her vision on a particular place. But concentrating on hearing seemed to make the everything around clearer

Clayton was stand next to everyone else in the throne room. Look at the other people that were around the throne room. He didn't really know any one in the room and he didn't really care to get to know them. Clayton only throught about the amount of gold he was getting for this job. In his mind Clayton was smiling with two bag full of gold in his hands.

"Arise, my son," he rasped, clearing his throat with a long cough afterwords.

"You are to head to the keep on our northern most stretch of our border with Tujivaro. You no doubt are aware of the strange happenings in the area, and I think it may be Tujivaran forces waiting for the right time to strike. I want you to speak to them, if possible, and dissuade them from their current course of action," He says, taking a seat behind his desk, dropping heavily into the large chair. "I will fear for your safety every day you are gone. The assassination of the Prince of Garganth and the near murder of the King has many on edge, myself included. I have arranged a small fortune to be sent with you, to the sum of two thousand gold, in the event that you require supplies on your trek," he finishes, his strength diminishing as he relaxes back into his padded chair, lacing his fingers together as his elbows rest on the arm rests.

When he speaks, his tone is flat and seemingly indifferent. He goes back to his book as he waits for the king to reply, turning a page and continuing to read the heavy tome.

Rising, Armin stood with an arm across his chest in a military style acknowledgement. "I promise that should it be possible, I will succeed."

His eyes glanced over at the Shaman as he spoke, his father had seemed unwell recently, but he had yet to hear about this 'treatment'... Now he was worried for his father's health.

"And if it isn't possible, we'll make it possible, sire!" cried Loro excitedly, throwing his arm across his chest in a hasty imitation of Armin's salute. Oh, yes, that was a knightly thing to say. Brilliant.

"And you don't need to worry about the prince, your majesty. He will remain safe, I swear it," he added, dropping to one knee ostentatiously.

"While your concern is appreciated, this task cannot wait. There is no telling how long these people will be there, or where their interests lie. I would rest easier knowing what their purpose is, and knowing that they have been dealt with. Go now, with my blessing, and may your journey be a safe one," He concluded, his voice sounding clearer and stronger as he looked on at the group he had assembled. They all seemed well meaning, and that eased his concerns with who he had chosen.

As the group left the room, he spoke again, "Ah, Mirek...?"

Mirek had never bothered to stand, assuming that there would be no reason the king would want him to go on such a mission. When the king speaks, he looks up and sees that the rest have left.

The king looks at Mirek, his face serious and his tone full of gravity. "We both know what is in that fortress. I need you to secure it and make sure it does not fall into the wrong hands. Tell no one, not even the prince, of this task. I have the key you will need to unlock the chamber it is in. I hope this is not the aim of the people flitting about our border, but I am completely unwilling to take that chance," the King said, holding up a key for the shaman.

"If it's even still there. The most recent accounts say that it is, but the most recent accounts are still far too old to be certain. And that assumes that what little was written has any truth to it. With records that old, you can never be certain how much is legend and how much is fact."

"I suppose you want me to travel with that group then."

He gestures towards the door where the rest of the group exited. He waits for the king to affirm this before speaking again.

"Are you sure that that is safe? Not just for me, but for the prince as well. I would feel much better with a group of knights as a guard. For that matter, I'd feel safer on my own, working in complete secrecy than I would putting my life in the hands of a mercenary, a mountain savage, and a priest."

He says the last word as if it was the most vile curse imaginable.

"I cannot understand why you would trust your son with that group. The mercenary is no different than any other in his line of work. The moment one of your enemies offers him more gold for the prince's head than you offer for his protection the man will betray you. The savage woman is unpredictable and no more worthy of your faith. Her skill with a blade is not in question, but I cannot see the wisdom in trusting a woman who seriously injured four good guards and could've easily slit the prince's throat. At least Sir Loro is a knight. An inexperienced and overeager one, but a knight none the less. Honor bound to serve and defend the prince, with his life if need be. ...Though I had always been under the impression that only women could become pegasus knights..."

"The priest is the worst of the lot. You would do well be rid of him sooner rather than later. His kind sells false salvation, preaching of imaginary evils and making men believe they would be better off handing over their gold and power. If you allow it, he will continue to warp the prince. To mold him into a puppet through which they can one day control Chalym. Cut his tongue out, shave him hairless, brand him, and exile him and all of his kind to the mountains. The man is no more qualified to teach the prince magic than a stay cat would be. The prince may have learned a few simple tricks, but only through his own effort and even then nothing more than any man with years of research, failed attempts, and access to your libraries could. Magic - true magic, not just simple tricks like conjuring a bit of fire - is not something that noble birth or vaults of gold and jewels can buy. It is something that a man must be born with. A seed of power that if nurtured can grow into something great. It's folly for him to continue to try and worse folly to hand him over to a priest for training. If you won't put an end to it, at least send him to learn from a proper master. In the hands of a skilled teacher, he may be able to one day develop some respectable skill. Nothing great I assure you, but enough to protect himself and enough to compensate for the military skills he refused to learn."

The king nodded in affirmation, that Mirek was to travel with the prince. "While you make many valid points, I'm afraid things are more dire than I have let on," He began, taking care to glance around, lowering his voice before continuing. "I can not tell you why I am doing this, but I simply need you to follow my commands. I have seen that which I have ordered you to seek, and perhaps that fact will surprise you, but it matters not. I understand your aversion to some of your traveling companions, I do not have time to create a more favorable composition for the escort, things are moving quickly and I fear the worst. Go now, advise the prince, if you believe your counsel better than the others, perhaps your guidance will prove a positive factor, if you believe the current influence, the priest, to be poor. I risk saying too much, my friend, and I pray that all of you return alive," He finished, far more animated than he was previously.

"The influence of any priest is a poor thing. I've never claimed any skill as a teacher, but I will do as I can. Perhaps if there is time before we leave, I'll find a stray kitten to take over his lessons - It certainly wouldn't be a worse teacher."

"Even if you have seen it, there is no way to be sure if it is authentic or not until I have a chance to examine it. Authentic or not, there is no reason to risk it falling into enemy hands. Do you want me to bring it here or simply assure that it remains safe where it is? Warding has never been my specialty, but given enough time I should be able to keep it from being discovered, and failing that, give us warning and time to act should someone try to claim it."

After the king answers, Mirek bows and leaves.

King Barin manages a grin at the thought of a feline guardian and teacher for his son, but lets the feeling pass before continuing. "Take it with you and bring it here, that would be for the best," The king responds at length, stroking his chin in thought.

After Saying your farewells, the strange band heads off towards their destination, the path well known and traveled, leaving little to chance getting lost or waylaid. The trip is nearly two weeks of easy travel, leaving time for the group to get to know each other, or not, at their discretion. The weather was favorable, clear and sunny for the most part, which is not out of the ordinary for the warm Chalym climate this time of year.

As the group approaches the fort on the last day of travel, they spot smoke rising in the distance, and climbing the last hill, they see the outlying town near the fortress is burning, and from here it is hard to tell how the residents have fared in the fire, but the brigands that likely are responsible are seen moving about the field, and even inside the walls of the fortress!

For the majority of the journey, Mirek has sat in the back of their supply wagon, trying to read and making his disdain for the heat, the wind, and most everything else about the weather and traveling conditions well known.

When the wagon abruptly stops, he finds yet another thing to express distaste for.

"Of all the pointless..."

Mirek gets out of the wagon and looks to see what had the audacity to disturb what little research he can manage while traveling. Seeing the men obstructing their path, he walks forward and points to the nearest one.

"You there. Clear the road. Your prince demands passage. Quickly, before we decide it would be faster to cut a new path through your fields."

(Seems like an easy enough map... Let Loro take the left two due to his higher mobility and the rest of us can sweep in towards the goal. I'm thinking Mirek will take H1.

Zelt: You did good on the map. It is far better than a lot of the first maps i've seen. Hell, it's better than my first map was and no worse than any of my current ones. One thing though, you didn't say what out objective is. Are we to kill the lot of them or is the boss the only one who counts? Or are the enemies not the goal, but rather capturing the fortress? You gotta let us know that sort of thing. And a minor thing is that bosses usually get a custom sprite in these games, but that's hardly as important as knowing the objective of the map. Another thing that would be useful, but not necessary, would be to label the enemy map sprites with their numbers. It makes it easier for players to look up enemy stats.)

The journey for Anderson was uneventful, aside from the near incessant whining of their resident shaman. You'd think he'd never set foot outside in his life. Which wouldn't have surprised Anderson very much, actually.

Anderson was inside the wagon when it came to a halt. When he stepped out to investigate, the first thing he saw was the smoke, rising off of a burning fortress. He saw the bandits swarming inside the fortress next.

"So much for the uneventful part of our journey. Wait, what is he-"

Anderson rushed towards Mirek, and whispered harshly in his ear. "Have you taken leave of your senses? These men have just sacked on of our fortresses, they're either brigands or worse. What possessed you to inform them that we travel with Chaylm's prince?"

He backed up slowly, suddenly more grateful for the mercenary’s presence. While his first loyalty might be to coin, at least he had experience with this sort of thing. Which is more than could be said for most of their little group.

Place me at F2, so I can be prepared to heal whoever attacks the closest bandit.

He says the word with no less venom than he had when speaking with King Barin.

"You jump to conclusions too quickly. There are plenty of possible reasons for a few common men to seek shelter in the fortress. Perhaps their village was taken by a wildfire and they seek shelter."

He gestures towards the same man as before.

"Take a good look at him. Filthy. Ugly. Ill-bred. Strong of arm and slow of wit. No different than any other peasant farmer. Yet you label him as an outlaw."

Mirek says, ignoring both his own common birth and the fact that the bandit can hear him.

"These men will know their prince and they will clear the road to let him pass."

The brigands don't openly respond to Mirek's berating, but instead seem to talk to each other in hushed tones, glancing at the party occasionally, as if making sure they were still there. A few moments later, one of them turns to the party, taking a few steps forward as he grins, resting the haft of his axe on his shoulder.

"Heh, we was told ye're comin' this way. Says we're ta put you to the ground. So go on 'n git ready fer yer dirt nap, kiddies," he says in a rough dialect befitting one of such low birth, surely. The others draw their weapons and call to those who failed to notice the new arrivals. All of the raiders turn with hungry eyes towards their new prize.

"I's guttin' th' mouthy one first!" The insulted brigand yells as he shakes his axe at Mirek.

(Assuming no objections,) Mirek moves from H1 to H5 and attacks Bandit 2. A sphere of darkness forms around the filthy, ugly, ill-bred, annoyed man, drowning out all light in the affected area. Moments later the sphere dissolves. (If both attacks connect), nothing emerges.

Mirek turns to Clayton.

"Mercenary, you heard their decision, yes? Use your violence on them. If this can be finished quick enough, I may even recommend a bit of extra pay for you."

(Numbers and planning)(Mirek doubles bandit 2 with a 92% hit chance and enough damage to kill him outright on two hits. He has a 63% chance of taking 10 damage in return. Myrmidon 2 can only deal 5 damage to Mirek with an 89% chance. Neither can crit. Taking a hit from each would leave Mirek with 1 HP. So long as Bandit 2 goes down for sure, it's perfectly safe.

Any objections of Mirek to H5 and attacks Bandit 2 and should either attack miss, the prince finished him off?)

(As Bladescape has put me in control of his character while he's away, I agree with the following plan and approve the following moves for Mirek, Armin, and assuming DukeGod is still away and I get control there too, "Espada".)

Armin -> H6, Attack Myrmidon 2. (94% chance to deal 12 damage. 8% crit chance. No counterattack. If he hits, Myrmidon 2 slain.)
Anderson -> H4, Heal Mirek.
IF Armin misses and Myrmidon 2 is still alive, Mirek -> G5, attack Myrmidon 2 (82% chance to deal 13 damage. 2% crit chance. No counterattack. If he hits, Myrmidon 2 slain.)
IF Armin hits and kills Myrmidon 2, Mirek -> I7, wait. (this might lure Knight 1. Not sure if he'll move from his fortress, but if he does, Mirek will survive the attack and might kill him on the counterattack.)
Clayton -> F6, Attack Bandit 1. (100% chance to deal 9 damage. 3% crit chance. Double attack. 55% chance of taking 7 damage in the counterattack. No crit chance.)
IF Clayton crits and kills Bandit 1 by himself, Espada -> E6 (to support Loro)

(This should deal with all possibilities with minimal risk. The absolute worst thing that could happen is both Armin and Mirek fail to kill Myrmidon 2, which would mean Anderson takes 8 damage. Survivable, and so low chance that it is barely worth consideration.

The plan is a modified version of something MintyNinja posted in the OOC thread. The only changes are positioning and move order. The changes I made all either move us closer to the eventual goal, or earn us support points that we would not have gained had we followed Misty's plan as written.

Clayton and Anderson's moves are unchanged and already approved. I approve Mirek's, Armin's, and "Espada"'s. Really approved Loro attacking, but I changed the position. Unless Zelt feels the need to get the position change approved, we should be set.)

My reccomendations:

Loro -> H8
"Espada" -> H7
Clayton -> I6
If we want to, we could put either Armin or Mirek at J5. This would put one of us in range of the mage or archer, but no one else. Mirek is probably better as he has higher Def+Res total and we can't predict which will attack.
Anderson should heal Mirek again for the experience. No one else is below max health.
We COULD put "Espada" and Clayton each one space further east, but since Loro has the triangle advantage, it might be better to just let him handle it. No big deal either way.

Haven't checked survivability, I'll edit the post when I have. Combat information below.
Myrmidon 3 - 64% chance to deal 5 damage to Loro, no crit. Loro counters for 11, 100% hit chance, 3% crit. Loro doubles, guaranteed kill.
Myrmidon 4 - 63% chance to deal 4 damage to Loro, no crit. Loro counters for 12, 100% hit chance, 2% crit. Loro doubles, guaranteed kill.

Loro is at no risk.

Archer 1 - 86% chance to deal 6 damage to Mirek, no crit. Mirek counters for 12, 87% hit chance, 2% crit. No double attacks.
Mage 1 - 76% chance to deal 3 damage to Mirek, no crit. Morek counters for 11, 100% hit chance, 3% crit. No double attacks.

Mirek is at no risk.

If you prefer, we could hold Loro back one space west and put Clayton and "Espada" each one space east. I haven't run the numbers (and if you want to do that, someone else will have to run them), but it's probably safe and they do need the experience more than Loro does.

We could put Armin at J5 instead of Mirek if we want to, but keep in mind that Armin has both poorer defense than Mirek and a triangle disadvantage against that mage. Still probably survivable (again, I'm not doing the numbers), but more painful and riskier overall.

Yes, because I gimped their stats, these banditos get to be clever. Also, to anyone concerned about it, expect the next map to be more difficult, I am kinda using HHM as a guideline for where my game should be, though toned back a touch.

Putting Clayton one space further east puts him in range of every attacker but the bandits, so I'm not sure if we want to do that. I'm not sure how vicious Zelt's going to have the attackers be on the first map, though. Both our sword users need to be cautious around that knight, actually. Rough estimate, he's got an 85% chance of hitting Espada for 10 damage or a 90% chance of hitting Clayton for 8, which would be disastrous if any others attacked them.

Good point, make that one south of where I said, not east. He'd still be in range of one of the two (archer or mage), but not both. H8 remains the single best spot to lure from, but we can only stick one person there =P

The Knight probably isn't going to move. He had a chance at nice squishy shaman last time and didn't take it.

(Assuming we're going for the boss now and are not going to attack those knights from the country we are trying to avoid a conflict with...)

Though no one had asked him to, Mirek approaches the castle. He walks at a steady pase, unconcerned with the men on horseback approaching from the south.

He stops a fair distance from the filthy, ugly, ill-bred bandit leader and speaks, careful to keep his voice low enough that his companions cannot hear.

"You. Yes, you, there's no one else left for me to be talking to. I've grown rather tired of this, so in the interest of speeding this along, I have an offer for you."

Mirek pauses a moment to try to read the bandit's reaction.

"Your followers who tried to bar our path have been cut down to the last man. None are left alive save for yourself. If you surrender now, I will promise you a quick and painless death. If you choose to flee, I will not waste further time chasing you, though I cannot promise the same of my companions. However, if you instead choose to stand in our way and further waste my time, then I will see to it that you spend the rest of eternity in agony."

Mirek pauses for a moment.

"I just had a wonderful idea..."

Mirek gestures towards Clayton.

"That man over there has proven surprisingly useful. Quick to obey and he has yet to question a command. I had planned on seeing that he was rewarded... His boots are rather tattered, wouldn't you say? I was thinking of purchasing a new pair for him. And if you continue to waste my time, I will bind your soul to the old pair and give them to the poorest, filthiest beggar I can find."

(If this doesn't make him back down, Mirek moves to P7 and unleashes the darkness.)

Guzroh looked around, at the lack of his men, and at the ones that had killed them. Hearing Mirek's offer and threat, he just shook his head, resting the haft of his weapon on his shoulder.

"Eh, well, there's not much for it at this point, huh? Death by you or them," he motions to the knights riding fast up to the castle. "Makes little dif'rence in tha end, so let's jus be gettin' it ova wif." He unshouldered his axe, shifting it to his other hand and motioning for Mirek to make the first move, not that he figured he could do much about it.

With his lance raised, Loro made a diving charge, thoughts of glorious battle running through his head. The bandit side stepped the charge without much effort. As Loro attempted to recover, the bandit struck him hard, Loro's first wound of the battle. Hastily, he struck out at the bandit, then retreated, hoping to get away without anyone else's notice.

Once the cavaliers began to retreat, Loro took to the sky, hoping to watch their path. "Return whensoever you wish! The might of Chalym will hold strong against any invaders!"

As Loro soars into the sky, he spots a dust cloud in the distance, in the direction that the cavaliers were riding, indicative of some large force moving quickly towards the castle.


With the battle concluded and the din of combat subsided, all grows quiet in the courtyard. There appear to be no people here, nor any bodies, save for the recently made corpses. Even within the castle, where there are signs that people occupied and lived there very recently, there is no evidence of anyone living there now.

Armin frowns, somewhat in annoyance, somewhat in confusion, as he watches the retreating cavalry from the ramparts of the formerly bandit-infested fort.

"Well. Isn't that odd. Tujivaran ensignas, if I'm not mistaken." His frown deepens. The military way they'd rode up, then departed as soon as the prince's party got to a protective zone was indicative of hunting. Hunting him.

With Tujivaran uniforms.

This was one of two things... "So." He mused to himself. "The question remains. Is Tujivaro wanting Chalym's prince dead... Or are these people trying to kill me as they've destabalised the royalty of Garganeth, and trying to frame our allies in Tujivaro, knowing that this is one of the few times that Chalym and Tujivaro have managed peace?"

Falling back into his musings, Armin turned to walk back inside as the dust cloud of the retreating horsemen went out of sight.

The castle was empty, no one was within. There were furnishings and even a few plates of food on the dining table, yet who ever lived here was gone.

Scant minutes later, the previously distant army has nearly reached the castle gates, and show no signs of stopping there. Before any defenses can be mustered out side of the castle, the foe has taken the court yard, and prepare to take the castle, but just before doing so, a man bedecked in the heaviest of armor steps forward and calls out to the defenders.

Once Espada finished her last armored opponent, she was a bit annoyed. That armor these people worn was really annoying! It didn't let her cut wherever she wanted...

And in the castle yet another man in one of those shows up. She knew (or rather was told to by some people of the castle offering advice) to aim for a thrust at weak spots. But that was all another language!

But, better to seem tough right now. Armin was in danger. She draws the blade yet again and holds it to her side

Mirek will move one spot to the right, to H8.

(I'd reccomend Armin to I7 and he and Mirek can lure the cavalier and double-magic him next round for massive damage.)

Loro to L7
And Armin to lure the Cavalier at K8, with Pillar bonuses.

Something makes me think Mirek could move in to open a chest while this was happening.

That's why I said Mirek to H8 and suggested Armin to I7. We can't get the loot yet so we may as well position ourselves to kill the cavalier safely. From K8 Armin is going to get attacked. From I7 he isn't. Pillar or not, he still risks taking more damage on K8 than he does on I7 and we don't have a healer anymore.

As for Espada and Loro, I'd actually suggest we put them in range of their targets. Neither can one shot their guy so they're going to take atleast one hit of damage either way. Let the enemy strike first and it increases the odds that they won't take a second and makes it more likely that we kill them faster.)

Espada, seeing Armin once more walk into danger by himself, gets a bit indecise between going to help or eliminating other threats. He was accompanied though, they should keep him alive...

So, she moves towards the other direction. Walking down the stairs and spotting an axemen. Where did he come from? She lets herself be spotted by the enemy, pretending she didn't notice him and prepares for the pseudo-ambush
