Why did this spell not make it to 3rd edition? It was a lot of fun and fit one of those archetypal things that mages did.

Also, what were some interesting uses you got out of the spell?

I once had a player who used it for a murder. He put oil around a building then lit it up. He let the fire it go for a minute or two (enough time to attract attention) then used this a few times to make it essentially disappear. When the fire brigade came 5 minutes later he let his target go inside the house before turning the fire to maximum size lighting the second set of oil soaked rags and bringing the house down killing all of them (his target was it's leader).

The psionic power Control Flames pretty much does the same thing I think, unfortunately they had to cut some spells out of older editions and someone made the call that Affecting normal fire wasn't something they wanted a wizard to do :/

There are a few FR races (fey'ri and fire genasi, I think) which get something similar. And then there's pyrotechnics (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/pyrotechnics.htm).

This spell existed in first edition as well and it worked very nicely with affect normal fires (though 2 spells to get this effect is a bit much).
