Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Ponythread Secret Santa

Here's how it works: You sign up here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmtanddZcVpfdHFxVURhUFVhUlMzU051eGdibTEwM UE) with your username and how you'd like to be contacted (PM, email, link through Steam, etc.). If you sign up, then a few days before Christmas you'll receive an email/PM/Steam Message/whatever with the name of the poster you'll be giving something to.

And what can you give, you may ask? Well, the spirit of the thing is to give something to encourage them. To let them know that you appreciate them, how you hope they're having a wonderful Christmas, and that their next year will be filled with ponies. That sort of thing. It can be a little written note, a sketch, a song recording, a short story blurb, anything! Be creative! It doesn't have to be too elaborate; if you're crunched for time, I doubt anypony would mind an honest, uplifting note from a friend.

Then, on Christmas Day (whenever that may fall for you) everypony sends off their gifts and receives one of their own. If you want to post what you get, feel free! Spread the joy! It's Christmas! I'm overusing exclamation points!

Anyone here play Wheel of Time or have read the series? I got a Wolfsister named Fiona that I'm playing as close to Flutter shy's personality as I can. Even named my horse Twilight :) Gotta love the insane sense-like skills I got. Had to take several combat feats though to have any real use. Three levels away from taking a feat that lets me talk to any animal, not just wolves.

Also, to any Starcraft fans here, check out this artist. Puts a pony in the image box for certain units, and gives em quotes relative to that unit.

Even named my horse Twilight :) Gotta love the insane sense-like skills I got. Had to take several combat feats though to have any real use. Three levels away from taking a feat that lets me talk to any animal, not just wolves.

I find it bizarre you would use that order.... and you actually have the RPG what a rare find. And a meek female character how un-WoT like of you. (No really I shouldn't say that I hate the flanderization projected unfairly onto the characters of the series)

Well, ok, a little clarity. I haven't read the books, only the DM and one of our players has. The DM also owns the books that we use, he's an enormous fan. I read the first....two books I think. Perrin as a character is rather exceptionally friendly too, so it's not out of the ordinary. And since I have a Madness rating, I took fits of rage, which fits well kind of with Fluttershy's character.

I've read the series, re-read it in time for the latest releases but will likely need to refresh again by the time the final book comes out. Never played the game though.

Eh, I'm not much a reader, but if I would I'd definitely read the series. It's actually more fun this way too. I can't imagine trying to keep information you might know about the characters to yourself, though I'm really good at playing my characters even if I know info out-of-game that I shouldn't. That was awesome. Though I'd like to know how Celestia and Luna came to be rulers, but I'm glad it's now canon that ponies managed the Sun and Moon without them, stripping them of some of their much hated(by me, at least) fan-appointed divinity.

The banner is probably something they had lying around that they used, not something historically accurate.

I was rather disappointed overall in the episode. Not because no REAL questions were answered, but because as a whole the story just kind of sucked. The ending felt really rushed, like it could have been a two-parter but was cut down to 22 minutes. There were some great jokes indeed, mostly from Pinkie Pie, and Spike trying for a (British?) accent. The first two acts set up the story, which was rushed at the end. Gief better plot please.

Well, a fun episode all around! I'm glad Fluttershy didn't chicken out! Pity about the lack of Celestia and Luna. I really want to know how they came around to taking the day/night cycle from the unicorns. But maybe this is a good thing! They can now devote an enitre episode to the Princesses' backstories! (yeah, yeah, I know it won't happen. A man can dream).

Episode weakens the "Divine Sisters" theory, through it doesn't outright disprove it, by mentioning that the unicorns brought night and day back before Celestia and Luna did.

interesting how each nation was ruled, what with the Earth Pony Republic (the chancellor was elected), the Pegasi military dictatorship and the unicorn monarchy, I wonder if there still are traces of it in the modern day Equestria.

I wonder if windigo's still exist or if they was driven to extinction due to a lack of hatred to feed on.

another interesting thing is to consider which parts of the play are historical truth and which parts was put in because it made the play a better play?

Possibly theories for the flag:
1) The sisters did exist back then even through they didn't rule yet, and was then put on because the tree tribes all saw the divinity in them.
2) the play merely used the modern Equestrian flag because that is what the audience would recognize.
3) it used Alicorns to symbolize the unity between the tribes and it is merely coincidence that it looked like the sisters.

first let me say that this episode is... not the best for me, but it is typical holiday episode fare and not really bad.

now from previous episode we know that there was a Paleopony age, probably he earliest recorded pony history. We know that cutie pox was first shown at this time, likely ponies have just a gathering culture (no hunters) and trying new plants caused the pox.

Then it seems the different pony races started developing tribal structure, the rudimentry trade of goods (food) for services (weather and day/night) a barter system with no monetary system established.
This is the Pre-classical era, as evidenced by the unicorn twilight was playing saying "my mentor, Starswirl the bearded" right before Equestria was properly established, and the first discovery of friendship magic.

Evidence suggest that this peace is followed by the calamity known as Discord. This Discordian age is no doubt a confusing time with little records due to the pure chaos of the time.

Classical era was no doubt brought forth by the Alicorn sisters, with either the discovery or forging of the elements of harmony. the rule of the sisters no doubt brought untold pony advances, unfortunately...

The Nightmare war followed due to the corruption by jealousy. no doubt this time period is a sad time for all ponies.

with the victory of Celestia a thousand year of pony peace follows, bringing further pony advances as we enter the modern pony age.

Now the actual episode response:

Complain about fanon?

Maybe some ponies do know the real story, but maybe the masses just like that old story for sentimental reasons. Maybe they all know it's not completely true, but it's just a tradition. Celestia seems to very much like to leave ponies to learn on their own rather than just teaching them. Maybe she hasn't told them everything because that'd defeat the purpose of historians.

And I think Faust said long ago that Equestria was more like a country or something. It's been the general assumption for a long time at least.

You are right, although I still think there should be a separation of age period before and after the nightmare wars. perhaps pre-war should be dubbed the harmonic age? Or perhaps that the release of Luna and teh rediscovery of the elements of harmony make the current pony era, the age of harmony?

Alternatively it's possible there was a reason that pristine land hadn't previously been settled. Or perhaps the Windigos are only one type of creature that feeds on hatred and disharmony. Perhaps the peace in Equestria didn't last as long as the ponies may have liked and they ended up attracting the attention of a new horror.

I'm starting to see a pattern here. Ponies start fighting, Windigos appear. Ponies stop fighting, Windigos go away. Ponies start fighting, Discord appears. Ponies stop fighting, Discord goes away. Ponies start fighting, Nightmare Moon Appears. Ponies stop fighting, Nightmare Moon goes away.

In regards to nitpicking, as mentioned, the flag shown is the current flag of Equestria. It's used since the audience is more familiar with it. I guess it's similar to some plays using more modern versions of the American Flag when the design may not be accurate for the era.

As for the raising of the sun and moon, I believe they said unicorns, plural. It probably took a whole group of their strongest mages to do it, and Celestia and Luna are powerful enough to do it by themselves.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode for what it was, worldbuilding. The mane cast played the parts very nicely. Not as filling as an episode of character development, but still tasty. Just a different flavor.

Or perhaps that the release of Luna and teh rediscovery of the elements of harmony make the current pony era, the age of harmony?

Complain about fanon?

Maybe some ponies do know the real story, but maybe the masses just like that old story for sentimental reasons. Maybe they all know it's not completely true, but it's just a tradition. Celestia seems to very much like to leave ponies to learn on their own rather than just teaching them. Maybe she hasn't told them everything because that'd defeat the purpose of historians.

And I think Faust said long ago that Equestria was more like a country or something. It's been the general assumption for a long time at least.
Personally I aren't buying that this myth is about Discord being overthrown, for one thing the story don't really look like it at all, what with discord missing and there instead being ice monsters, no Celestia or Luna, nor are the element present (neither named, nor is there an physical vessel like there was the other times). Really the only similarity is that in both cases a treat to ponydom was defeated using friendship magic.

Alternatively it's possible there was a reason that pristine land hadn't previously been settled. Or perhaps the Windigos are only one type of creature that feeds on hatred and disharmony. Would the Elements of Harmony still exist (possibly created in their first form to fend off the Windigos) and predate the Alicorns in that case? If not, did the fledgling nation continue to develop military pegasi and unicorn magic during the classical era until they all proved impotent against Discord?

Yeah, I'm really starting to wonder why they seem to leave out Celestia and Luna even in scenes where their presence seems like it should be an obvious choice.

I really wish they'd give those two a little more attention and some more appearances. Just as background ponies where it makes sense, if nothing else.

I'm also a little sad that this episode seems to only add new stuff, it doesn't deal with any of the things that have previously been mentioned of Equestria's history.

It's a nice episode, but... It just seems odd in what it leaves out.

well, though the ponies continued to practice friendship magic, it is still mostly a mysterious force that manifest itself occationally. Discord knows how to distract ponies from practicing friendship.
It wasn't until he, in a moment of boredom, decide to combine different pony races together for fun, that powerful alicorn wa created. Discord just thought of them as choatic creations and treated them much like how he treats other ponies.
However as a few Alicorn grew up, they grew powerful and fought against Discord, It is at this time that a pair of alicorn siblings were able to focus and harness the mysterous friendship magic and forge the element of harmony.

And that's HOW ALICORNS ARE MADE!

Well, the issue is that many people really did consider Celestia and Luna to be actual gods. Small g, so they're not omnipotent by any means, but if you look at the creation myths of most ancient cultures (e.g. Greek, Hindu, Egyption etc.) they all involve the gods appearing first and creating or controlling the world, then people come around much later.

This play, if you take it at face value, implies that not only did regular ponies predate Alicorns, but that unicorns controlled the sun and moon before Luna and Celestia were around. That suddenly makes the Alicorns look like usurpers who either took over the world or were forced to assume power in order to fight Discord (or for some other disaster). Either way, it changes the perception of Celestia and Luna and leads to troubling questions about whether most ponies even know how they came to power or want them to be there.

My only concern is that is raises so many questions about Celestia and Luna. I don't think I have a real problem with this story as such, I just more than ever wish for an episode to explain their history now.

Anyway, this episode was written by Merriwether Williams, who also wrote the Mare Do Well episode. I kinda feel bad for her that her episodes seem to cause so much... discussion.

Leaving aside any questions raised about the nature of the Sisters and what not I really liked this episode. Just as an episode it was a lot of fun, it was very funny without getting quite a zany as Lesson Zero. I liked the military dictatorship pegasi, I liked the callback to Starswirl the Bearded. Pinkie played someone named Chancellor Puddinghead who... wore pudding on her head. That sounds about right to me. Fluttershy was adorable and I loved sarcastic straightman Applejack.

It was a lot of fun.

I am now beginning to think a human being would not survive in Equestria, mostly because I would start hating Windigos and they would feed off my hate for them and freeze me. humans are too negative. the ponies only thrive in their world because of their unique adaptation towards optimism and friendship.

Eh, I'm not much a reader, but if I would I'd definitely read the series. It's actually more fun this way too. I can't imagine trying to keep information you might know about the characters to yourself, though I'm really good at playing my characters even if I know info out-of-game that I shouldn't. Our player who has read the books, he is not so good at it.

Yeah, Wheel of Time was fun back in the day, but I don't know. When I was 13, they were the awesomest thing since awesome came to awesome town. When book....eleven I think (last one before Jordon died)? Anyways, by the time eleven came out, I just had trouble getting into them again.

I'd say my favorite part of WoT is the world building, not the actual story or characters themselves.

Also yeah, playing in a set setting like WoT, you need to basically say "ok, screw canon and lets just have fun!" By trying to hook the game into the books too much, you are just asking for pain and tedium.

Well, this one was okay. It's always nice to learn a little about the history of a fantasy setting, but other than that there weren't really any highlights for me. The resolution did seem excessively cheesy and a bit forced, but I guess they didn't want to make this a two-parter. Oh well. Not one of the great ones, but I will take it over the Crusaders and Rarity-centric episodes we've had this season at least, and maybe also Mare-do-Well.

S2 E11:
Well, the Christmas thematics aren't particularly enjoyable to me (Russians don't celebrate Christmas in quite this way), but on the overall I guess it's a passable episode. Pretty funny in a lot of places, especially where Pinkie was present. I half-expected it all to turn into a disaster-ish spectacle a-la Ember Island Players, but oh well.

As for the three windigos and the conspicuous absence of the Princesses... epileptic tree time! The Windigos are actually the original Alicorns, transformed by exposure to the Great Fire of Friendship. Two became the princesses of the Sun and the Moon, but one mysteriously vanished, eventually reappearing in his new, twisted form - as Discord.

So, the roar heard when the M6 are arguing again at the end - those are Celestia and Luna, under the influence of their original Windigo forms. The whole thing with setting up the play for Hearth's Warming Eve is actually a ploy to concentrate Harmony and Friendship in Canterlot, to create the Great Fire again and prevent the Windigos from regaining control.

THIS EPISODE WAS BRILLIANT, THAT IS ALL.

But that final flag... it kinda bugs me... They proibably didn't want to bother with the history of equestrian flags, and basically did the equivalent of having George Washington raise a 50-striped flag.

As for the ham and cheese: it's a play. A "Birth of a Nation"-style, propagandistic, ancient, traditional play. Of course the storytelling techniques are basic to the point of being skeletal. Of course the dialogues sound forced and strange. Of course the nations are represented by one leader and one follower. The story, whatever's left of whatever actually happened, is condensed as much as possible, reduced to its barest elements. And while the characters are lively, they are also fairly flat and one-dimensional: they are pure plot devices, ALL of them. And the entire plot exists to serve An Aesop: don't be a ****. It's kind of a basic Aesop, but one that bears repeating.

Also, it's ironic how it's Rainbow Dash of all people that represents the Enclave.

@Russian Christmas: that reminds me of a play I saw this week about a guy who was in love with a very vain girl who, to torment him, asked him to bring her the Zarina's shoes as a precondition to marrying him. The guy tricks a demon into helping him, and after a very amusing ecounter with the Zarina, comes back to find that everyone thought he had killed himself. There's also a very silly B plot about his mother having nearly half the village as lovers, unbecknownst to each other, and the classical comedy that arises from that.

Unicorns couldn't really wear rings on their horns anyway unless they constantly used their magic to keep them there...if they nodded their heads the ring would slide right off since the horns are tapered fairly sharply

Nice thing to wake up to. A bit cheesy, and as subtle as a cake to the face, yes, but it's the christmas episode so it gets a pass.

Overall, I liked it better than Mare Do Well, because even though the lesson was applied rather heavily, I didn't feel like there was the same malice in how it came about.

Ok, on rewatch, I like the fact that the Leaders all got frozen first simply by virtue of the fact that they were standing further apart. Not sure if that means points for subtlety or symbolism, but will give it credit for that ^^

I basically feel the same way as a couple of you. It was a pretty good episode, but I would have liked it better if it didn't raise more questions than it answered. I did like it, though, and I don't feel that there's anything wrong, personally, with the story of Equestria's founding. Pinkie Pie (well, Puddin' Head) was hilarious, and the whole thing was enjoyable overall.

Anyone here play Wheel of Time or have read the series? I got a Wolfsister named Fiona that I'm playing as close to Flutter shy's personality as I can. Even named my horse Twilight :) Gotta love the insane sense-like skills I got. Had to take several combat feats though to have any real use. Three levels away from taking a feat that lets me talk to any animal, not just wolves.

Episode thoughts.
This was a really, really fun episode. I liked the Derpy appearances at the beginning, and it continued to be good well afterwards. I paricularly enjoyed the mention of Starswirl. The story was an interesting one, although since it pretty much rips apart prelaid canon. Are the alicorns needed at all for what their established duties or raising the sun and moon? When did Discord rule? How could they have a flag of Equestria when the alicorns hadn't entered the picture yet?

I actually came close to picking up the game the other day. I don't care for what I've heard about how it models the setting's magic though.

Channelers are horribly overpowered and can basically do anything. There is no penalty for doing certain things, like weaving two weaves in the same round (that's a quickened spell in D&D terms). Plus over-channeling and stuff that makes them cast at a higher level. It's insane. Also, our DM is running it a little differently than the book, because the book came out around the fourth or fifth book, so things are different. Which is fine, but I'm seeing a bias toward certain classes. He's giving our Asha'man pretty much everything in the world, while most of the other players are getting crap. Though I can't say much, there's not much item-wise that benefits me. Except normal combat gear.

Alicorns are gods, and were always worshiped by ponies though never did they appear physically, except maybe to devout worshippers. And that is why they were represented on the first Equestrian flag.

But during the Discordian Age, the hope and fervent prayers of ponies mixed with the ancient friendship magic, and thus the perfect fusion of all pony races are made manifest, in fact, they are friendship magic incarnate. There should be no doubt to their divinity or their divine right to rule.

My current pet theory is that it takes hundreds or thousands of unicorns working together to raise and lower the sun and moon, so the ponies see the Princesses as having freed the unicorns from that task which allowed them to come up with all the magitech innovations that have made all ponies' lives better.

This made me think, what do Earth Ponies and Pegasi wear instead of rings? They have no horns.
Have we even seen anything like that on the married couples in the show?

On pegasi career choices (episode spoilers!)
So, another interesting piece from the show. In last week's episode, it was shown that the Wonderbolts were members of the Equestrian military. In this episode, it is shown that the original pegasi had an established military, and placed their Commander as their ruler. They were violent and brave, but at the same time, they were organized. They weren't afraid to stoop to weather control.
In the current age of Equestria, I theorize that the pegasi are pretty much split into two factions: the "mundane citizens", which include the weather teams and the pegasi who's special talents are unrelated; and the core of the Equestrian military, who also include most of the Royal Guard pegasi.
It makes sense that the original "army clan" would make up most of the modern-day military, but we see several pegasi that are quite clearly simple citizens. However, I think it's a good idea that pegasi would make up the army, not only because of their roots and personalities, but also their abilities. They obviously are capable of flight, and they have also been seen (and heard) to be capable of making their wings razor-sharp when needed.

I am starting to dislike her. The main reason is that her stories, though well written, is far and apart from what ponies had established.

It may be due to her being new writer. Aside from her rather off-character protrayal of the main 6, the main thing I have a problem with is she has been breaking minor pony conventions left and right. Trains, dams, construction cranes, using foot for measurement when the word "giant" could work just as well. Basically she feels like a "guest writer" that is messing around with the ponyverse. Not badly mind you, but rather carelessly that can cause problems later.

Discord can magically subtract/add horns and wings, I didn't so much mean scientifically breeding alicorn but rather some discordian magic may be involved in our pony pricesses' creation.

We had trains back in Over a Barrel, and the way I understood it most of the team were all "Yay, trains!" but Faust wanted to keep the tech level lower, so they made a compromise by having it pulled by horses. Maybe the train we see in this episode is simply a result of Faust having left and may have nothing to do with Merriwether Williams but rather the team as a whole being less dedicated to keep the tech level low without Faust. It's also possible that Hasbro said "Hey, we want to make this train as a toy, can you fit it in?" And they did.

I'm thinking an episode is probably a major collaboration, with the final result bearing the marks of most of the team. It's probably difficult to say which parts were due exclusively to the designated writer alone.

I'm hoping her next episode will get a better response.

Either way, the unicorns surrender their role of controlling the sun and moon, and the Sisters take roles as princesses of Equestria.
Until Luna gets jealous and becomes Nightmare Moon.

So, somewhat belatedly again, got round to watching today's episode. So, as usual, my initial reactions, with back-reading the thread to come shortly...

That...was not what I was expecting at all.

It was interesting - there were a few funny moments; "Chancellor Pudding Head" probably being the single funniest... In fact, Pinkie with Applejack as the straight-mare pretty much stole the show, there, despite some stiff competition from Rarity and Twilight. (And the shot of Rarity riding Twilight is so going to be taken out of context...)

It raised a lot of questions, though, like why did this train not need to be pulled by ponies? Or perhaps a better question is, why was the one to Appleloosa pulled if steam power is available? What, is coal at a premium so they ran out or something? Possible, as Equestria's large number of gemstone resources may come at the cost of other natural mineral resources, and they may have to manufacture coal (or charcoal perhaps, but the latter is probably magically doable for ponies).

"Before the rule of Princess Celestia" and unicorns raising the sun and moon asks so many questions... Further enhanced by the flag with the Princesses on it. I suppose that could just be the modern flag. Or perhaps the Princesses existed (as or venerated as goddesses), but didn't rule directly (perhaps their predessors?) That opens up so many questions about the mythology, and to be honest, it strikes me as a bit haphazardly done in terms of writing, as if Celestia was sort of shoved aside so they could tell this particular aesop about friendship, and I'm not sure I like that.

Still, it could be that Celestia's predecessor simply were not as benevolent as she was in later years (or perhaps she wasn't herself until later, who knows).

(If Discord was in charge of the world, for example, he probably couldn't be everywhere at once, and until Equestria was big enough for him to notice, he may have been the other side of the world, tormenting dragons or gryphons or something.)



Spike is also nearly as big an attention-hog as Rarity and people say they have nothing in common...!

This episode is going to cause so much debate...

Now having caught up with the thread...

Spikes says before Celestia's RULE. This could mean before she was born, before she was corporeal, or merely she was directly in charge. She could have been alive and corporeal (and a goddess) at the time, just in a different part of the world. (Equestria may not be massive, after all). Indeed, nothing says that the three tribes were the only tribes of ponies in the world - Celestia could have been in charge of some other pre-Equestrian civilisation elsewhere at the time Equestria was formed, and gravitated there later (perhaps elected as Princess after freeing them from Discord's rule?)

(She's still a goddess, as far as I'm concerned, and no-pony is going to convince me otherwise until they specificallt state in the show, which they won't!)

A point no-one has brought up so far is that in Everfree Forest, the sun and moon raise by themselves, do they not? Perhaps the sun and moon are more local effects? I'm not sure I'm any more comfortable with that idea, either, though...

On the episode
The pegusi military dictatorship was interesting. On as for why some pegusi are not realy into it as others, I would chalk it up in the same way most people with varying european blood in the U.S realy do not attempt to make do on there heritage: they simply do not have a reason to.

Ponies like Fluttershy are not realy sutiable for the life of a Cloudsdalien, with some having talents with no real uses in the skies, and others may simply be the decendents of those who decided to leave the cloud cities and give land a shot. Others, like Rainbow dash, simply left the cities for a job. Seeing that her house is clearly made in the greek style of her home, it seems that she is still attached to the city in some way. Fluttershy, on the the other hand, has almost none of the competive side seen in every other young pegusi seen so far.

On the new monster:

This is why I'm starting to think Friendship as less of a virtue in this show and more of an evolutionary adaptation that the ponies possess that makes them the dominant species of their world. Every time it goes away bad things happen and when it comes back, it somehow solves the problem.
Again, Friendship seems more and more like a survival mechanism in this world than a virtue unto itself. the more its shown to solve things, the more I think that the ponies don't possess friendship because its a virtuous trait of society, but because its a necessary and vital mechanism for surviving and living in their world of monsters and such that feed off and take advantage of chaos, discord and conflict.

If you're talking about the rings on horns, Prince Glueblood offered one to Rarity in her imagination sequence from Ticket Master.
But none of the married couples in the show are shown with any obvious equivalents, are they? The Cakes, Twilight or Pinkie or Rarity's parents?


It raised a lot of questions, though, like why did this train not need to be pulled by ponies? Or perhaps a better question is, why was the one to Appleloosa pulled if steam power is available? What, is coal at a premium so they ran out or something? Possible, as Equestria's large number of gemstone resources may come at the cost of other natural mineral resources, and they may have to manufacture coal (or charcoal perhaps, but the latter is probably magically doable for ponies).
My theory is that the Appleoosan train used a more primitive engine that could not do the job by itself, while the new train (only introduced in Season 2 proper) uses a state of the art engine.

New episode:
A point no-one has brought up so far is that in Everfree Forest, the sun and moon raise by themselves, do they not? Perhaps the sun and moon are more local effects? I'm not sure I'm any more comfortable with that idea, either, though...
When Nightmare Moon brought eternal night, it explicitly included the Everfree Forest, so unlike the weather and such the Everfree doesn't appear to have an independent sun-moon cycle.

Spikes says before Celestia's RULE. This could mean before she was born, before she was corporeal, or merely she was directly in charge. She could have been alive and corporeal (and a goddess) at the time, just in a different part of the world. (Equestria may not be massive, after all). Indeed, nothing says that the three tribes were the only tribes of ponies in the world - Celestia could have been in charge of some other pre-Equestrian civilisation elsewhere at the time Equestria was formed, and gravitated there later (perhaps elected as Princess after freeing them from Discord's rule?)

(She's still a goddess, as far as I'm concerned, and no-pony is going to convince me otherwise until they specificallt state in the show, which they won't!)

No. In the everfree forest, animals take care of themselves, plants grow alone, and clouds move on their own. The moon stayed up in Everfree in episodes one and two, despite the fact that the sun should've been up.

Note, at the risk of interpreting a 1000+ year old amateur play for historical detail, there seemed a possible suggestion that not all the pony's followed their leaders to what would become Equestria. I see some people assuming that there's nothing left there, but who's to say there isn't still pony society there?

Perhaps, unlike the Equestrian faction, those who stayed didn't learn the lessons of friendship in quite the same way or quite soon enough and there remain three or more less utopian and politically seperate pony societies.
Also, Equestria seems to be landlocked. So perhaps the fourth pony tribe, when leaving the old country, was the only one not to end up in Equestria?

Otherwise, though I'm sure it isn't the case, I kind of like the idea of Celestia and Luna having a kind of Fable style backstory. Marked as special by their nature, sure, but having fought their way up from the streets of the Old Country from absolutely nothing, eventually saving Equestria from Discord and becoming Princesses. If we're modelling it on Fable, though, they'd have bought all the houses and kicked a lot of chickens by that point, though.

Technically each and every pony in Equestria still has a choice whether to be friends or not. Otherwise characters like Trixie and Gilda would not exist. I see it more of a cultural influence than a direct magical or evolutionary affect.

The fact that at every powerful inteligent being so far was powered on disharmany/arguing/dissension and the like shows that any relationship between others besides friendship or mutral coroperation usualy powers some cosmic spirit or another and might end the world. Or at least makes in inhabitable or very cold.

I think, somewhat inevitably, the whole evolutionary mandate for friendship is a little over-analysed. :smallwink:

Which is to say, it's not like a tendancy to co-operate isn't already powerfully selected for by evolution anyway.

More specifically, to be fair to the two main examples in question, I'm not sure if they support the hypothesis as such. Firstly, Discord didn't really seem to be powered by Disharmony and Crankypantsness, nor harmed by friendship and warmth. He was simply a powerful reality warper, agent of chaos and was defeated by the combined power of a half a dozen supremely powerful magical macguffins. The fact they might in any sense derive their power from warm fuzzy feelings is at least mostly irrelevant.

Likewise, the Windigos, as presented to us in the play, are defeated by some kind of previously unknown unicorn magic which is possibly triggered by warm fuzzy feelings. But they had only just discovered the Windigos were at fault, despite them having at some point in the past encountered them enough for Starswirl the Bearded to have documented what they were and what they could do.
It's quite possible that you can beat a Windigo with other spells or with some good old fashioned ultra-violence. The leutenants didn't have the option or time to, but the important part of the play was that due to the nature of the crisis, the calmer heads had a chance to talk with each other and make some real diplomatic progress, thus ending the pointless infighting and founding a new, better way. Commemorated of course in song and plays and traditions that evoke that same situation that made it possible.

Actually, given that they knew the Windigos so easily once revealed, I can't help but feel that in Starswirl's day, they encountered and soundly thrashed the Windigos in an entirely different and less Harmonious way, given that it was pre-Equestrian history and that the big blizzard was a one-time plot by the Windigos to get revenge by doing their thing on an epic scale by far above and beyond their normal capability. After all, it'd make sense if they usually were solitary creatures if nothing else, I can't imagine beings that literally feed on hatred and infighting are the most easy of neighbors to get along with.

I agree with the sentiment in that I want for myself and everyone else to be able to choose their path in life. However, I don't have a choice about whether I eat or not, whether I keep warm or not, whether I find a place to live or not. My alternative is starving/freezing to death. Ponies do have a choice about what they want to do (unless you also believe that cutie marks are predestined at birth). But apparently friendship for them is part of an evolutionary adaption.

You're right. I guess I don't have a problem with the monsters because I simply accept that as a part of the MLP world. Mostly I like the fact that there are dangerous monsters that present real, deadly threats because it makes the conflicts in the show feel more meaningful. Fluttershy doesn't just have a forceful personality, she actually saved Twilight from being turned to stone! etc.

I guess, what I find kind of weird, is that I've never heard people complain that they need magic to fight monsters in D&D or that futuristic GENERIC NON-40K space marines have laser guns to fight aliens. Ponies need friendship and it works pretty well for them.

New Episode stuff.

To me, this episode was the final nail in the coffin for the 'the princesses are divinity' theory. It's pretty obvious that the three tribes didn't need Celestia and Luna to raise and lower the sun and moon which puts it beyond the providence of divinity. If anything, I could admit that it might be a lost skill that no one knows besides Celestia and Luna, but I think even that's a stretch.

My theory on the princesses now? Unicorns can raise and lower the sun and moon just fine, albeit with enough effort, but two ponies are always born in who are exceptionally good at it, earning their Cutie Marks for the act, and known for having wings.

Keep in mind that alicorns and them being a seperate race is pretty much mostly fanon, in the show and from the development team Celestia and Luna are just noted as winged unicorns. An 'alicorn' may just be...well..the result of the Super Power Lottery. You get wings, an excetionally long life-span, and enhanced magical powers, but you aren't [i]unique in it.

It just makes more sense in my mind then the two princesses being gods of any kind.

As for questions it raises...
How long did Equistria exist before Discord took it over?
How long did Discord reign before Celestia and Luna imprisoned him, cause I got the impression from Celestia that he ruled for a LONG time?
Did Celestia and Luna become princesses on the basis of the fact that they united the three tribes and defeated Discord?

The flag doesn't bother me at all though, as someone else pointed out, the CMC were in the crowd which would suggest a lot of fillies and foals might possibly be in attendance. Using the antique Equistrian flag would have just confused them, so they used the modern one instead to save time and effort explaining how a flag can change over...a really really long time.

On the whole, the episode felt like one of the weakest ones of the season. Don't get me wrong, I love world-building, but I prefer to have it woven into a story rather then it just being laid out there instead of a plot. Compared to other awesome episodes this season that managed world-building (albeit not of this quantity) AND a good story, I feel like this episode dropped the ball in not trying to do the same.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode for what it was, worldbuilding. The mane cast played the parts very nicely. Not as filling as an episode of character development, but still tasty. Just a different flavor.

On pegasi career choices (episode spoilers!)
So, another interesting piece from the show. In last week's episode, it was shown that the Wonderbolts were members of the Equestrian military. In this episode, it is shown that the original pegasi had an established military, and placed their Commander as their ruler. They were violent and brave, but at the same time, they were organized. They weren't afraid to stoop to weather control.
In the current age of Equestria, I theorize that the pegasi are pretty much split into two factions: the "mundane citizens", which include the weather teams and the pegasi who's special talents are unrelated; and the core of the Equestrian military, who also include most of the Royal Guard pegasi.
It makes sense that the original "army clan" would make up most of the modern-day military, but we see several pegasi that are quite clearly simple citizens. However, I think it's a good idea that pegasi would make up the army, not only because of their roots and personalities, but also their abilities. They obviously are capable of flight, and they have also been seen (and heard) to be capable of making their wings razor-sharp when needed.

I am still certain that the Wonderbolts took off Spike's spines with their hooves, not their wings.

What the... See, this fic takes all the grimdark that's in FO:E and... doesn't add new elements. Instead, it just takes what's there and takes it to its logical conclusion.

I've just witnessed an interrogation by raider. Not somepony being interrogated by a raider. No, it was by the hero. The interrogation was made using a raider. I said Littlepip was like the Hobo With A Shotgun. Security is like Marv from Sin City, except even more ruthless, once you piss her off. Our protagonist, ladies and gentlemen. And the worst part is, the circumstances warranted that.

The amazing thing about this fic is that it found a reasonable explanation for the raiders' absurd violence. They weren't just evil drug addicts. They're infected by a biological disease that sponges their brains.

And the Enclave is trying to turn it into a bioweapon, if they haven't already.

Well, I really don't see what the big deal is with the whole timeline thing-we just build new theories, change the fanon accordingly, move on. Hating it just because it pokes holes in fanon is the epitome of fan immaturity, in my not-so-humble opinion.

I'm not saying it was without flaws, but I think the episode was simply an average-to-good episode in a season filled with awesome ones.

Plus, it gave me an idea for a scene in an Exalted/MLP crossover I may do:

A Ponified Malefactor, upset with what he views as the naivete of the main cast in viewing the world as anything more than a savage, vicious place where the only true law is rule or be ruled (which is ironic, since he has Compassion maxed-he just happens to have a demon's-eye perspective of the Age of Sorrows, so it's pretty true when it comes to Creation) going little god-hunting for catharsis.

He finds a few Windigos, who were attracted by the bitterness and anger of him and his Infernal friends (who also have Compassion relatively high because they're the only Exalted who can go to Equestria without feeling the urge to conquer it-but by Pony standards, they're still hateful and vicious).

Two hours later, he comes back to Ponyville, feeling a lot less grouchy, and with a backpack full of abnormally cold starmetal ore.

Yep. Horizons is amazing. Cannot wait until they manage to meet a certain King, because there is quite a bit of buildup to that. Also, on raiders: not every raider is infected with that virus. After all, if that was the case, the world would be (more) utterly screwed over. Rather, most are just simply crazy, but that virus riddles ones head with holes. That makes ponies like the Reapers even more scary, because they are at the top of there games. Which makes it worse is that some completly sane ponies turn to cannablism by choice.

Also, is it just me, or is his ability to discribe horrible things getting better? I was positivly sickened by the Hospital, but the events that happened within chapter 22 actualy made me nauseous.:smalleek: Ugg, never will I read the word "bloated" or the sentance "Hey, her liver grew back!" the same way ever again. Ever.

That is extremely unlikely. No villains have appeared after the episode or two-parter they premiered in (Well, there was Glueblood, but he was in the background and he was more of an antagonist.) The ending did imply they may return if ponies feud again, but I don't see any way the three races could end up in a large-scale conflict with one another again. It's probably a good idea to never seriously expect anyone to return, lest you just set yourself up for disappointment.

If a pony got some other cutie mark, she would be highly unlikely to go into a career as a professional writer.

To be fair, it depends on the situation. A earth pony that could write legably with is mouth could make a fortune on the novalty alown. A unicorn using magic would be nothing special, but juging from the one peice of actual writing we have, it would take a lot of time to learn eastern european-type letters. Hence the use of pictures on common items. Notably, most writing might be done by nonpony scribes, for thumbs would make things a whole lot easier to deal with the issuse of handling a pen. Not so much baby dragons, but creatures with actual hands like Dimond dogs or even griffons. As such, most things handwritten could be unicorn made, but others find it cheaper to have another creature to write it down.


As for writing cuti marks: we have seen a few scroll-and-paper cutimarks on the flanks of more than a few backround ponies, but those could mean anything from producing the paper and ink to actual writing. Its feasable, and there are ponies for everything, but they are probably part of the stuck-up unicorn elite.

I would note that we have seen more ponies write with their mouths, than we have seen Unicorns write with magic. I would imagine that not every writer has a writing cutie mark, just the best of them. If nothing else there would be autobiographies written by famous ponies and text books written by ponies with marks about research of the subject at hand.
Now that I think about it, not even every celebrated writer would necessarily have a writing mark, I mean if Tolkien had been a pony he would probably have a linguistic cutie mark.

I would imagine that not every writer has a writing cutie mark, just the best of them. If nothing else there would be autobiographies written by famous ponies and text books written by ponies with marks about research of the subject at hand.
Now that I think about it, not even every celebrated writer would necessarily have a writing mark, I mean if Tolkien had been a pony he would probably have a linguistic cutie mark.

Anyway, I mentioned doing a bit of Telephone Pictionary a while back. I was wondering if anyone was still interested in doing it? I'm setting one up on Canterlot.com and was thinking that maybe a big cross-board game might be fun. We have 14 or 15 players or so already. Going from the lack of lower legs, could be a Linnorm. On the other hand, I wonder if they knew that a thing called a Drakon existed in greek myth? Basicly, it was a gigantic serpent-thing with forlegs. Fits the greek theme, at least. Makes me wonder if there is a whole greek-themed area out there that has all the varying animal monsters of greek myth as wildlife.

Well you can't have your cake and eat it. Either you're anonymous, friendless and blend into genericness in such a way that, were people to start hating you, you could simply come back with another name and no-one would notice (automatically losing touch with everyone and having to start every relationship from scratch), or you develop a well-known personality that you will carry like a flagship, allowing people to recognize you regardless of handle. Some people have such an irrepressible personality that they have no choice in the matter. People who have interacted with them for a sufficient time will recognize them no matter what disguise they try to don. These people must as careful about their Internet behavior and statements as they would be in Real Life, much more so even. since there is no such thing as privacy, and your words are instantaneously recordable and infintely reproductible to a universal audience regardless of your will: you have no legal power over them, unlike, say, what happens on a private discussion with your friends.

So, if you're going to do things that might affect people's opinion of you, especially if there is the faintest trail that would allow one to trace you to your real-life persona, be-ware. Be very very wary.

Unicorns couldn't really wear rings on their horns anyway unless they constantly used their magic to keep them there...if they nodded their heads the ring would slide right off since the horns are tapered fairly sharply

Okay, my two bits to pony history:
Celestia and Luna were always deities, but not physical deities. This explains why they were on the Equestrian banner (other than a potential in-universe of Did Not Do The Research), when they didn't rule Equestria. Celestia and Luna were presented in a pony form for the same reasons why ancient civilizations' gods in the real world are portrayed as having a human form.
My guess is that around when Discord decided to cause all hell to everypony, Celestia and Luna decided to take physical form to create and/or wield the Elements of Harmony to stop him.
However, when they did stop Discord, either A: the sisters were unable to return to whence they came, B: they decided to stay out of their free will and love for the ponies. Either way, the unicorns surrender their role of controlling the sun and moon, and the Sisters take roles as princesses of Equestria.
Until Luna gets jealous and becomes Nightmare Moon.

My main problem with this theory is the fact that every pony in the show seems to treat the princesses as royalty instead of gods. I'm willing to accept that they could forget things like the history of Discord and whatnot, but I can't accept the idea that they'd all randomly forget that there's a pair of gods living down the street

Issac Asimov may never have built a nuclear power generator the size of a grape, but he'd imagined his universe so strongly that he knew what that would be like. J.K. Rowling may never have cast a spell, but she admitted she based Harry and his friends (and even locations like the forbidden forest) off of real people and things. I've never been a soldier but I know what I'd LIKE to be in that position. Things like that.

As opposed to an Aetheist trying to write a story based around religious faith, or a spoiled rich kid writing about growing up in a ghetto.

You don't have to be an EXPERT in something to know it. You don't have to have a special talent for apple bucking to know enough about it to write a book about an apple bucker. You need to do the research. Same as humans do.

You don't have to be an EXPERT in something to know it. You don't have to have a special talent for apple bucking to know enough about it to write a book about an apple bucker. You need to do the research. Same as humans do.

For that matter, I'm having a hard time thinking of any Nobel physicists, bioweapons experts or former presidents of the united states who have written anything I'd be remotely interested in reading.
