Welcome all to another thread of Random Banter, the best kind of thread on this forum! First, let's go over the rules to make sure that we all can have fun.

Rules and such:
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Two week vacation now, with my best friend getting back from the last of his training in Marines yesterday and dropping in on school unexpected. Man-hugs were had. He's even stationed in the next town over, as reserves, which makes it awesomer.

Now to play hours and hours of video games before I realize there is still a massive stack of books I wanted to read in my down time plus a school assignment of reading four chapters out of my actual US AP history book. But bah to that, for it's Saturday!

This. You can hide posts from certain groups of people - My family sees less then half the things I post of Facebook. And you might not have been a stalker just standing behind her, but if she didn't know you were there ... That is sort of creeper-mode.

The minimum wage in Australia is $15.51/hr. But, depending on job requirements and level, there are minimum wage levels for different jobs that are higher than that.

Casual loading is 20%. This means that if you are employed on a casual rather than temporary/permanent (they can call you in whenever you both like and you don't accrue sick or annual leave) you will get, at a minimum, $18.612/hr. This loading is to offset the loss of income when you are sick or take time off.

Your work sounds like it would be casual, you should check to see if it is classified as such and if you get casual loading because of it.

This loading is to offset the loss of income when you are sick or take time off.I obviously can't speak for Canada, but I'm not aware of anything like this in the US. Minimum wage is minimum wage. Some locales have legislated higher wages because the national minimum is insufficient for the cost of living in a given area, but I've never heard of any place requiring casual workers to get paid at a higher rate than non-casual workers.

EDIT:

I'm...not actually sure if it goes by any rules that would fit the standard set, because my Mom is the boss.We also have some built in exemptions for this sort of situation. I'm not sure what they all are, but one example is that the minimum age to work is lower if you're working for the family business.

Actually, I was slightly wrong with my 20%, the rules changed last year. The exact casual loading percentage is determined by your award (a government set terms and conditions of employment for your field) or your workplace agreement (which applies to everyone employed at that employer, or at least everyone employed there in your field, and can set some provisions at less than the award as long as, on the whole, individual employees are better off). The usual amount is 15-25%.

I have a friend who works as a doctor, which in itself grants him a quite acceptable pay. However, because he lives so close to the hospital, they usually settel on calling him in whenever they need an extra hand at night instead of calling someone who lives further away. This, IIRC, effectively quadruples his pay for those hours, as it's both "jour" ("duty", or work outside his normal work hours) and inconvenient working hours.

His problem is that he works too much according to our laws, and each year he manages to save up an insane amount of compensatory time, which I can't remember if he's actually forced to utilise or not...

Given that the value of the dollar has decreased quite a lot since then, you'd definitely come a lot further on that amount back then than you'd do today. I don't know any numbers for the dollar, but I do know that the Swedish crown has decreased in value by a factor somewhere close to one hundred in the last 50 years. Hey, just a quick question for you guys. I'm playing Heartgold and need another pokemon to round out my team. Who should I get? My current team is..

Quilava, Spearow, Ghastly, Magikarp, and Magnemite.Going by pokemon types (since it would really depend on moves and strategies)

Weaknesses are water, electric, ghost, electric again, fire, ground, rock...

Strengths are grass, fighting, ghost, ground, rock, water... Then cross out the weaknesses that strengths cover...

I recommend a dragon type. Cuz dragon types are incredibly awesome. But also because they resist most everything (including all of your current weaknesses) and as far as i remember are only really vulnerable to other dragon type attacks.

Dragon's are also weak to ice, and seeing how this is Heartgold, I don't think I can get any dragons other then Dratini, which would be alllll the way after the last gym. So good suggestion, but nope, not gonna work.

Unless this is wrong, of course, and I could get other dragons.

Most police forces use a system called the escalation of force, a series of guidelines that measures escalating acceptable use of force. As far as I'm aware (but don't quote me on this) police officers are allowed to use up to one higher step of force than their opponent to subdue him, if justifiable. So if a person makes verbal threats, an officer can tackle him. If he draws a knife, they can draw a gun. And so on.

I'm not sure where toy swords would fall on such a list. Or a taser, for that matter. And each country has its own set of guidelines, of course.

And each country has its own set of guidelines, of course.I believe that, at least in Australia, tasers are meant to be, as I said, the last resort before guns. Because, again, they can be deadly. In my opinion, their use must be used with extremely strict education and rules, because it's too easy to get trigger-happy with them. That doesn't mean I'm against them as a rule, though - at least one life in my town would've been saved if they'd made it into regular usage here by then.

So, playground peeps, I need some opinions.

I'm hoping to take myself out to a club tomorrow night. The planned top is a black fitted v-neck with sequins around the neckline. It's admittedly quite low-cut. The potential matching bottoms are either a pair of skinny silvery-black jeans, or a knee-length shimmery pencil skirt that laces up the back. Heels with the outfit either way, either pumps or boots. I know, I know, but I don't have anything else that matches and would actually stay on.

Question 1: Is "revealing" ok for going out at night, or would it be more advisable to put a cami in? By revealing, I mean we're at the doesn't-quite-show-the-bra-but-pretty-close stage.

Question 2: Pants or skirt? The skirt would of course have tights or leggings under it (it is december).

Yeah, in Biology last year we had to do a long writeup for every lab we did, which was a major part of the score we got for the lab. Our longest paper was for our Anatomy unit, the lab was rat dissection. My paper was a little over 20 pages, I think, but I know that in the past it has been over 100 pages :smalleek:

But now I've just realised that I've got to store it until christmas. How do I do that? It's a plain chocolate cake (wheat and milk free).

Some cakes will keep very well in the fridge.

Alternately, if the ingredients are not crazy-expensive, treat this one as a test run: Eat it and make another closer to the right time.

Yeah. Most teacher grade over lunch or during other classes so that they don't have to work on it over break.

Not really. You can get some cheap scholarships and recognition out of it though. The most important part (in my mind) is that you get to see what you missed so you know what you need to brush up on before taking the actual SAT.

I have made a monstrosity.

Some kind of heavily violated jambalaya.

Specifically I took 2 cups of rice, a package of those knorr-lipton rice in the buffalo chicken flavor variety, brought it to a boil, added in 3/4 of a medium sweet onion diced middling fine, 1/8th or so of a block of velveeta, a can of diced tomatoes and green chiles, and two middling thick slices of ham that I diced(or was it cubed?), and then dumped in creole seasoning and hot sauce while simmering it.

It was surprisingly delicious.

ION: I have discovered a package of hotdogs that was left out of the refridgerator all last night and today after being out in the 30 degree weather the night and day before. The house didn't get much above 55-60 during that time period. I'm wondering whether to risk opening the package to see if they smell like death.

Room mates kind of suck, as they're never very observant.

Arg project >_<

I have the following abstract to work to:
The basic version of a timetabling problem requires a set of classes to be assigned to time slots. Classes with a common student or a common teacher should not be in the same time slot. There are often additional constraints such as associating classes to rooms such that capacity contstraints are respected. A common goal is to minimize the number of time slots used.
The project requires the various different types of timetabling problems to be discussed, and a variety of solution methods to be reviewed. A useful starting point is the following review paper.
R. Lewis, A survey of metaheuristic-based techniques for university timetabling problems, OR Spektrum 30 (2008) 167-190.

I have no idea what to do. I can't see myself writing a review better than the Lewis paper, and the last project for this course I got penalised for not having enough original content, for staying too close to the literature and not injecting my own thoughts. I did have one idea, of taking half a dozen existing timeabling algorithms and testing them all on the same set of data, but the lecturer in charge shot it down as far too much work for a three week project, more suitable for a master's thesis. Gah!

What? I've been doing too many adlibs? Nahhhh.:smallcool:

Gah.

A little while ago (~20 minutes), I was peeling potatoes. Now a tiny bit of the side of the tip of my finger is not there.

Apparently, the correct solution is ice and a bandage.

First thing I thought of was when someone on here thought I had my finger removed to remove a wart.

Well, she was doing research, making conjectures, and stuff ... Mattos was just putting down information that he had been given.

Right?

I wonder how long my mom's doctoral dissertation was...

Well, it was a combination of information we had been given and our own observations on the dissection.

Aaaaagh why is there so much SNOW! Snow snow snooooow! It's snow good!

I have the exact opposite problem. It's nearly Christmas and there has been almost no snow at all.

You're going to just adore shaving, I can tell. :smallamused:

To be honest, I scraped my knees and got bloody noses so often as a kid that the sight of blood just bores me.

Although I'm also so inured to it that the people who get aroused (*shudder*) by it are, like, doubly creepy to me than most people from what I can tell.

Of course, then I learned that there was something wrong with the cartilage in my nose making me a mutant or something, which makes the fact that I'm accustomed to waking up in my own blood even more of an awkward relationship hurdle. Being as most women don't really like to wake up in their own blood and they have every month since they turned 9 to get used to it.

Gaping? No.

And actually, it was the second thing I thought. First was AAAGH BLOOD GET BANDAGE.

Alternatively, shave better?

One or the other. Try an electric razor perhaps?

Mutant Sheep

Electric is easy and so much nicer than those damnable razors, but I STILL feel nervous with them. Though I ask you now, why shave at all?:smallamused:

Cobalt
2011-12-20, 11:42 PM
Well, I don't exactly maim my face. It's more like a sort of 'bleeding from the root' when the hairs get cut off. Which is easily fixed by a thorough wash-clothing and a stern talking-to.

And I do use an electric razor.

EDIT:

Though I ask you now, why shave at all?:smallamused:

Society demands it?

Society demands it?

News to me.:smallconfused: Tons of people wander around with beards. As long as you take half a minute to make sure it isn't the scraggliest pile of unattended hair ever, it seems to be perfectly fine with the sane people I know.

Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with having facial hair. At least half of the male teachers at my school do. And probably about 1% of the eligible student body have more then stubble. :smalltongue: (I'm a minority now! :smallcool:)

Which would explain my dad's manly stubble... how? :smallconfused:

And yes, my dad listens to WAY more dubstep than I do.

I just go through what he gets. He weeds out the... less tasteful stuff for me.

Hmmn.. "sympathy"? How about "empathy"? Sharing the pain? Phantom pain CAN be used for this too, though it isn't the medical term for it. I think. :smallconfused:

No, I mean, like, let's say someone described their lip being brutally mauled and your lip started hurting. Googl-fu has revealed that is not Phantom Pain. Though ... It's what I've always called it.

I'd call that a somewhat weird variant of synaesthesia (where particular sensations in one of your senses causes odd effects in another--e.g. you hear a particular noise and see the colour blue).

Feytalist

Sympathic pain, I think. Or empathic pain, depending on the severity. Same reason every guy around you cringes when you describe a groin shot.

Metalcrafting is serious business, even if you're just a dabbler. Seeing how things are going right now, I'll probably have gone through half of the human metalcrafting history before I'm done. Good thing I'm not possessed. It would be such a shame if I didn't get any XP out of this...
