Looks like your cousin has potential. (Well, you too, but you know that. :smallwink: )

...man, calling that jacket "bloodstained" isn't even getting close to describing it.

Edit: Just saw the post edit above it: that one works definitely better, but the hip shape on the right side looks kinda weird, seeing how low it curves.)

Nice, but has the issue that the bottom left panel isn't inside the uh "reading flow line", as it were. As a reader you kinda skip right past it from "my face" to "what's wrong with you".

haha glad you think so :0 but if you're looking for inspiration I suggest making a bookmark folder of all the awesome artists you want to draw like/really like regardless!

Nah, that requires, like, a computer all the time. I'll do that after I get a tablet and stuff.

In the meantime! I'll just abstract things into pseudo mathematical expressions and apply them! :D

intermittent doodles from the past few days; I need a spark v_v
http://i.imgur.com/CkbGnc8.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/htNZ22I.jpg

"In-high", huh? That's the medial malleolus, with the lateral one being exterior. A fun bony protruberance, that.

Spark?

Wide angle picture; central, stepping out of the boxes, a hound-woman. Based on a saluki, long floppy ears that look like pigtails. Wears a business suit, strutting. Sunglasses, a black & white bandanna around the right bicep, and wearing "bling", poorly. Behind, left side; a short long haired blond Caucasian wearing the bandana, dressed like a cholo and smiling. Behind her, unfocused perhaps, a combination cheer leader/body builder, also fair. A brute, but a good looking one. Other side, right of central figure, six foot six vengeful angel-figure, arms crossed, bandanna at throat. Cold, hard, angular, beautiful. Hair in a mass of waves like a pale corona.
All figures save striding hound woman are within letterbox.

Bonus points for making it look like they are pretending to be a successful gang.

Your saluki is pretty much dead on as far as I can concieve. Kudos!
I also like the other figures, they jive well with my mental state. We have achieved sympathetic resonance it seems.

Well, just to nudge you in what I think is the right direction (I could be wrong or confused), and to collect my thoughts on the matter too I guess... If you remember that wall of text about color I posted in the Ponythread learns thread, jumping off of that a bit: choosing colors begins by ignoring colors and focusing on values/lightness (which is why a lot of introductory art courses tackle color, as most people know it, very late or not at all, or so I've heard--I also hear some art courses don't even tackle color until the later years of their formal study); having a good grasp of values means you're able to render forms and stuff more effectively, and is a compositional consideration as well I think (I don't know much about that though).

I've been doing "weird" colored paintings for a few reasons: one, I think grayscale value studies are boooring; two, it helps me focus on values anyway since I don't have preconceived notions about how things are supposed to be colored; three, a bit hard for me to explain, I like to think there is a "pleasingness" to colors and pictures, related to complements and the like, as well as variety, and using weird colors sort of loosens me up to more varied coloring, hue and saturation-wise, since I tend to color dully and I'd like to change that.

As a final, tangential note: contrast is usually related to values (brightness & contrast, that sort of thing), but there's also contrasts in saturation and hues: I'm not sure if this is always true, but I've read that "warm" hues tend to "pop out" and the "cool" hues the opposite; then, of course, higher saturation catches the eye more than lower saturation, and can be used to create contrasts for focusing on stuff on a piece (beginning and bad artists, as I've said before I think, tend to either use either high-saturation colors everywhere--a childish garishness--or the opposite--muddy dull and brown; now, the former is hard to forgive I think, and the latter you can rely on value contrasts, but many people are tired of it--see, "gray and brown and bloom" in some video games)... and by saturation, I meant chroma really, since high-value high saturation colors can be lower chroma, letting people make beautiful pastelly art (on my mind atm is Cucumber Quest's art, which is just lovely).

I'm not really in a level of authority to say those things authoritatively, but for now I believe them to be true; also, maybe I've already said all that in the aforementioned prior post, but I think it's worth reiterating.

Sounds about right; I have nothing even looking at or like a formal education on art, but I've heard the different schools of thought are soulless technical skill, or "do whatever you want and I wont judge you because its aaaarrrrttttt". The first one is hard but results in better skill, supposedly.

what's confusing about the mouths? also yeah, it's a bit indistinct at the hair, maybe I should've lightened the hair start and gradated away darker

You kinda just throw them on to where they look about appropriate, but it fits the style and shows an ingrained understanding.

The sword stroke is too even. You would be accelerating for the first 3/4 and decelerating on the last; movement speed is a slanted bell curve. If you tween a sword stroke or use even spacing between layers, it will look artificial.

Nice painting; I'm jealous.
