View Full Version : Liking Outdated Clothes And Idiosyncratic Fashion

I like fezzes, bowties and stetsons. I also like to wear vests with classic pants and flat venetian loafers. When I don't wear a vest, I wear a thick black leather jacket with no ornamentation whatosever. Regardless, I tend to wear a trillby fedora in winter. The end result is something between the classical bohemian and Captain Van Der Decken (I have Go Nagai wavy curly eighties hair and it tends to circumvent and curl right over the edge of the hat).

http://weddingbellsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/bohemian-wedding-theme.jpghttp://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/c/c8/Vander_Decken_Victory_Pose.jpg

So, perfect balance between silly and cool, IMHO. Of course, some would say that disqualifies my opinions on anything fashion, but, hey, what works for me doesn't have to work for other people.

Anyone else have some funny or cool dressing habits? (Please do not post actual photos of your actual selves... this is the Internet after all).

But then again, I also wear the blouse/waistcoat with These (http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/b/0/0/a4/d/AAAAC251M4YAAAAAAKTZxg.jpg), so I dunno if that counts. :smalltongue:

Stetsons and waistcoats (at least as a niche form for girls) have kinda made a come back as a minor fad.

Heck, IIRC, what people call fedoras are, more often than not, actually stetsons. And most of us can probably remember that fad around 06ish.

My current next big thing to buy is a leather duster. It will go well with my fedora (er, for clarification, stetson), I hope.

I do have a cape (a dang good one), but really, it doesn't go with most of the other clothes I like.

You remind me, a nice, black woolen greatcoat is a mighty fine article of clothing.

Gets that whole refined image down without as much of the baggage of trenchcoats, keeps one warm without a whole lot on underneath down to about 25 Fahrenheit, and they manage to still pull off looking snazzy with a bowler or other fine men's hat.

Where I'm from, a Stetson means a cowboy hat and nothing besides it. Relatedly, I dress in pearl-snaps and cowboy boots almost as often as not which, while not that abnormal in some places, makes me an oddity on the East Coast. Considering that the rest of my fashion choices make me something of an oddity anywhere, I certainly qualify as idiosyncratic.

Before I gained twenty pounds, I would wear vests with pocket watches with regularity. I even bought a fine bowler cap to go with my black/gray ensambles.

Now if only I could get back to 170 so I don't have to shell out hard earned coin to the tailor to hide my laziness.

Stetson is a company that makes several different kinds of hats, and clothes as well, not a type of hat.

The more you know.

The trouble with naming things is that names aren't intrinsinc to the things. Rather, a thing's name is the name it is called by. If "Trillbys" are called "Fedoras", then they are also "Fedoras". And, wouldn't you know, among the very few images "trillbys" brings in GIS, a large number are from this very forum thread? That's a rare word, ain't it?

@Heliomance: Why not show your photos? Here's why. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226583) By the way, that's really snazzy. A little over-the-top by Western standards, but from a global perspective it's quite smart-looking (though the elaborate embroidery and reflective cloth would mark it for formal occasions mostly).

@Yora: Your brother is the short one? Seems buff. You both look nice.

Edit: Just to make sure, negative criticism is okay, as long as it counts as "crticism" and not "ripping off", yes? I mean, if we can only say nice things to each other then there's no value in them, right?

That's because it's misspelt. The singular is "trilby", the plural "trilbies".

Pish, tush, and likewise pooh. It's perfectly good everyday wear :P
And I seriously doubt anyone is going to see my picture and "rip off my style". If they do, good for them! There'll be one more snappy dresser in the world, and that's a good thing!

As for derision, why should I care what some jerk on the Interwebs thinks? I dress eccentrically partly as a deliberate statement that I'm not afraid of the world. I'm hardly going to be afraid of some loudmouth with a computer.

In that case, my hat looks rather like this one http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/images/product/main/TRILBY.jpg

You know, when I opened this thread, I spent a lot of time on Wikipedia looking for what my clothes were called, and I've found it to be woefully incomplete. Seriously, what's up with that? I can't find sites on the internet that explain clothes properly: their names, their varieties, the different types of cuts, of threads, of styles... And I'm the sort of person that thinks that if something isn't understood in words, isn't verbalized, then it isn't known in a meaningful way, because you can't share subjective experiences.

Would you believe that the things that gave me a taste for fashion were Tite Kubo's covers... and Rarity.

EDIT:^ I meant "ripping off" as in "verbally assaulting". And don't get me wrong, I really like that ensemble, I just think it's a little too shiny, but maybe it's just the flash. Flashes make things shiny.

This. I wear crazy @!"£ because it's awesome. Each day the question I ask myself is "How ridiculous do I want to look today?". And from that comes my jeans+Tshirts, or my waistcoat/blouse/skirt, or my gothy stuff, or a combination of the three. :smalltongue:

Note that Stetson is a brand, and therefore makes many different styles of hats, though they are mostly known for their cowboy hats. I hope this clears up some confusion on the subject of mens hats.

Yeah, I've always been picked on for my ...eclectic? fashion sense IRL. I wear a lot of "granny" clothes, homemade stuff (which is suddenly "in" again, although most of it's made by machines or poor little practically slave children [rollseyes]) and the like. Now that I'm a university student though, it's almost expected of you. And yet I still get folk looking down their noses at me for the way I dress sometimes (in fairness, I am often pretty dang unkempt)

Ķkornar munu hafa žig (Squirrels will have you). But a better one would be "Meiga ķkornar taka žig" (May squirrels take you) or "Meiga ķkornarnir taka žig" (May the squirrels take you) if referring to a particular group of squirrels. Taka can also be replaced by Hirša under these circumstances for a more profound insult.

On topic: Suits and vests are awesome! I would were them every day if I could get away with them in a lab.

It's not quite outdated (because really, there was no date where it was fashionable) but I knit myself a scarf in the vein of Tom Baker's Doctor and when I wear it around I tend to get pretty odd looks. It's shorter than Bakers (due to a combination of not wanting to trip over it while wearing it and laziness on my part), but I think I captured the rest well. It looks pretty much like a shorter version of this, goes down to my knees (actually, looking at it again it more comes down to mid-thigh) instead of being monstrously long like his. I think that counts as idiosyncratic, as well as intensely geeky (which I'm more than okay with). It's incredibly warm and when combined with the nice wool sweater I got at the consignment shop a few weeks ago makes a unbeatably comfortable outfit.

You are officially hip, or whatever.

Anyways! I'm always really slow on the fashion wagon, which is funny, since I am such an avid fashion fan. Most of the times, its really just an issue of when I get around to buying things I want. I don't often shop for clothes, so by the time I purchase the newest fad, its right on the end of its stint.

I still love my prairie skirts and wedge heels, though. NOONE CAN EVER TAKE THAT AWAY FROM MEEEE

Also, sort of hoping the nineties goth scene comes back soon. I missed out on it the first time, so I've been collecting and waiting...

I wouldn't say I wear outdated clothes or anything idiosyncratic, but I honestly don't tend to give two fish about what other people think of my (lack thereof) fashion sense. Generally, it's jeans and a t-shirt which may or may not have some sort of superhero on the front. And I quite like that. Although generally I'll just wear whatever I think looks nice.

I have a lot of old necklaces that I should wear more often though. Like my dragon.

Yes, one of those is a halloween costume of me as the Riddler. The Matt Smith Doctor one doesn't count as a costume, because I wear that outfit regularly regardless. The above pictures do not include the vintage tuxedo, tweed suit, tweed jacket, black velvet jacket, grey morningcoat, white dinner suit, Chinese Noveua jacket and the collection of waistcoats which I have recently acquired. If I acquire any photos I will happily post them, if anyone cares.

The most interesting fact about half the clothes featured is the prices I acquired them for. Since 90% is ex-hire, a great deal was gained for under £10, and occasionally under £5 an item...

It was kinda weird. My usual ensemble is jeans, a t-shirt, and a suit jacket or blazer from a thrift store, ideally pinstriped or in some bizarre pattern; not all that idiosyncratic, but still. I started this in the late 90's and have been doing it ever since. Then, sometime in the 00's, it became a popular look, and people were doing it all over the place. Then it gradually petered out, and now it's down to just me and Dr. House. I still don't think suit jackets are all that peculiar, but some of my younger co-workers have said they think it's bizarre, even though they admit I look quite dashing in it (as long as I'm not making the face I'm making in my avatar, because that one scares the younglings.)

Besides that, I have been occasionally known to rock the hell out of a bowler-hat.

I've been trying to locate a decently priced bowler hat for a good while now. I've had to settle for toppers and top hats :P

And thank you all for the kind comments :P

If I could afford to dress as a Victorian gentleman on a regular basis, I would absolutely do so.

If I could find a place that would actually sell me that kind of clothes, I would as well. >_>

Or maybe...

Not if I do first! >:3

Many thanks, my Old Norse is very poor at the moment. Please feel free to correct me should I make more mistakes with it.

I got mine from a local costume store; cost about ten bucks, unlike those fancy-pants antique store hats, and as an added bonus, it doesn't have that strange musty smell that things in antique stores have. It's not exactly the highest-quality thing out there, and I'm sure if I wore it to some sort of hard-core steampunker high tea soiree at the Zeppelin Club, I would be tittered to tatters, but it gets the job done. By which I mean "I am wearing a bowler hat".
