Hypnotic Pattern and Rainbow Pattern

How do you actually use these spells? I see how they work, but for what purposes would you cast them? Why prepare or learn them?

For subduing large groups of weaker creatures nonlethally, or alternatively one higher HD creature. Stopping riots, cavalry charges, unruly orphans etc, without harming anyone.

Rainbow pattern allows you to move the effect. You can move a group of guards out of the way, a mob over a cliff, etc. Dangerous areas force a new save, but hell, they've already failed it once.

Clearly an evil spellcaster will use fireball or similar but when the innocent-orphan-and-nun controlling thrallherd comes at you what's a good-aligned spell-caster to do?
