So my group is looking into playing the Council of Thieves adventure path as our first plunge into Golarion. The adventure path is set in the nation of Cheliax.
I've read through the player's guide and everything else I've been able to find online, but I can't quite get a feel for the kind of society that's supposed to exist. My gut instinct is that they're trying to portray a sort of parody of a unified Renaissance Italy with the nobles being a cross between merchant princes and Borgias that summon devils for kicks and with the addition of an extralegal, totalitarian police force in the form of the random Hellknights wandering the countryside.
That seem about right for the default assumption?
